bojacobs, to nuclear
@bojacobs@hcommons.social avatar

Our high-level nuclear waste, spent fuel from nuclear reactors, is the most substantive creation of human civilization. It will outlast everything else humans have made.

It is how our descendants will know us, we are the people who made that.

How do we warn the 1,000s of generations who will experience risk from this radioactive waste?

@sts @histodons

https://vimeo.com/663187398

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@bojacobs @sts @histodons This is a popular myth but it’s not true at all. This stuff will last 10,000 years at most. The really nasty stuff will last about 300 years.

There are other things we produce that will actually last forever. Arsenic, for example, which is both a byproduct of burning coal and of certain industrial processes. Unlike radioactive material it does not become less harmful over time. That’s with us forever. 1/?

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@bojacobs @sts @histodons Arsenic created as a byproduct of industrial processes is typically sealed up and sequestered in vaults below the water table, but the stuff from burning coal gets into our waterways and soil.

You’re much more likely to be exposed to that and other “forever chemicals,” including radioactive ones, than anything that comes out of a nuclear power plant. 2/?

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@bojacobs @sts @histodons As for spent civilian nuclear fuel, that’s almost entirely recyclable. We don’t have the special reactors for recycling it in the U.S. but they exist elsewhere.

The non-recyclable stuff is the really nasty stuff with the short 300-year half-life. 3/?

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@bojacobs @sts @histodons Stuff like the nuclear weapons research waste at Hanford is really bad but if we had a MOX reactor we could burn it all up (and nuclear warheads too).

The other stuff we are just dumping out there, like PFAS and of course all the greenhouse gases that we don’t know how to sequester and clean up, worries me a lot more. /end

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@lertsenem @bojacobs @sts @histodons I would like to have MOX reactors to get rid of warheads and the stuff at Hanford.

Civilian spent fuel can actually go into deep geological storage (that exists in at least one place in the world).

@fkamiah17 I think I remember hearing something about it a while ago and also mentioning prison hulks at the time.

LadyDragonfly, to random

Emily Dickinson wrote nearly all of her poems in common hymn meter (alternating lines of 8 and 6 syllables, usually in iambic meter with an ABAB rhyme scheme).

That means you can sing them to the following songs:

  • Gilligan's island
  • O Little Town of Bethlehem
  • Amazing grace
  • Pokemon theme song
  • House of the Rising Sun
  • The Mos Eisley Cantina theme
MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@LadyDragonfly Why shouldn’t I sing “Because I could not stop for death/he kindly stopped for me” to the tune of GILLIGAN’S ISLAND? Show me where it says I can’t do that.

Is "Threads" the new Twitter? —Yes, unfortunately.

If you use "Threads" and have the feeling that some forms of bigotry and ignorance are not being aggressively weeded out, as enthusiastically as you would like, I assure you it is not by mistake.

The company is focusing on building their user base.

We may not necessarily be as bad as Twitter (or Truth Social), but I assure you, we are not being given full authority to police "Threads" as we are the rest of Meta, in my opinion. 🙄

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@Linux_Is_Best There are a lot of smaller companies that are hiring IT people and will pay decently, maybe go look there.

Or at least you can do management at a place like that with a less toxic culture. Even doing the kind of work you want to do isn’t satisfying when the organizational culture is toxic.

bluesky is experiencing major community backlash after the platform allowed users to register handles with racial slurs

but it's about more than just that

i spoke to bluesky users to find out what's going on: https://mashable.com/article/bluesky-racism-username-anti-blackness

@MattBinder I am completely unsurprised. People seem to have memory-holed what Twitter pre-Musk was like, and people with the same basic inclinations who ran that outfit (not just Dorsey) are running BlueSky.

Willie D from the Geto Boys spoke about a white YouTuber going into low income black neighborhoods to play “pranks”—and this time getting shot and killed because the “prank” was a fake robbery.

I agree with him. The miracle is that more people haven’t been shot and killed. These so-called “pranks” are trash content. Racist too.

@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@atomicpoet if I were on a jury I would vote to acquit the shooter and also to give that YouTuber a Darwin Award.

I mean, pranking a home invasion anywhere in America, regardless of the SES of the area, is stupid because of how many people here have guns and how there’s so much cultural messaging that it’s okay, nay, a duty, nay, a privilege to shoot people who are trying to rob your house.

MisuseCase, to random
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

Yes there are a lot of issues with the American armed forces but we all understand that the anti-abortion, anti-diversity, anti-whatever stuff that House Republicans put in the defense bill is a backdoor way to push women, non-white people, and queer people out of the military and that’s pretty bad, right?

Here's the only reason-capitalism. This is why I don't listen to NPR; it's just neoliberal garbage.

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@Radical_EgoCom This is kind of like “why can’t we stop illegal immigration,” the ugly truth is that we could solve 90% of the problem if we wanted to, but the existence of people who are destitute, and the existence of an easily exploitable and deportable underclass of laborers, is great “pour encourager les autres.” It’s not a problem for the rich and powerful.

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@uusilauri @SocialistStan @Radical_EgoCom Borders are violent. People should be able to go where they want, live where they want, work where they want, etc. Autocratic regimes would collapse. You know how I know? In the ancient world, rulers had to restrain themselves because if people didn’t like their rulers they could just pick up and leave, and they frequently did!

Natural gas can be just as harmful to the climate as coal, a new peer-reviewed study concludes, reports @hirokotabuchi. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/13/climate/natural-gas-leaks-coal-climate-change.html

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@w7voa @hirokotabuchi Also natural gas is the backstop for solar and wind when they don’t meet power demands

And natural gas lobbies work to block new nuclear power plants and shut down existing ones (just like coal lobbyists did and still do).

Star Trek historically portrays fully automated gay space communism only to up to the extent that it's quite gently pushing the mainstream boundaries on the various issues involved.

A with-their-whole-chest portrayal of such a society would actively provoke the kind of culture war regressive nerds pretend Trek is provoking from time to time.

Also, I would like this.

    @victor Also the human at the other end is probably a low-paid contractor in Kenya and with the time pressure they are under they are not in a good position to understand the nuances of some weird meme stuff Americans are talking about.

    I am not kidding about the Kenya thing - Meta, Twitter, OpenAI, etc. basically all use the same contracting company in Nairobi.

    Yep, Meta can absolutely slurp up anything publicly posted anywhere. Threads already has more users in 48 hours than the entire Fediverse has. I know it sucks that 99% of users don’t give a shit about having their data collected. Reality often sucks that way. https://mastodon.africa/@wogan/110672618108077159

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @grmpyprogrammer Users do give a shit about having their data collected and when presented with meaningful, easy-to-understand and easily accessed options for limiting permissions and personal data collection, they will use them. We see this in the way that iOS presents permissions and clearly explains app data usage to users. Most users will say “no, I don’t want that.”

    It’s why Meta and most other social media platforms obscure that information and make it hard to opt out.

    Playing as an isolationist empire doing Inward Perfection, I somehow managed to become Galactic Custodian and leader of the League of Non-Aligned Powers in the War in Heaven anyway. This was all possible because I got the OP diplomatic Paragon leader towards the late mid game.

    (You either know what this is or you don’t.)

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @maxmm77 There are a lot of conditions that have to be met to trigger a War in Heaven. You have to have more than one Fallen Empire, one of them has to awaken, and another one has to awaken in response. The odds of an actual War in Heaven happening are higher if they have opposing Ethics (e.g., one is Xenophile and the other is Xenophobe, which happened in my playthrough).

    The overall odds of a War in Heaven occurring are kind of low, through, even with multiple Fallen Empires in the galaxy.

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @trochee @maxmm77 @deuceofgears It’s a BABYLON 5 plot. The whole 4th season is basically that. Since is a grand strategy space opera trope blender that is very up-front about its influences it’s not even subtle. If you take the option to form the League of Non-Aligned Powers and take on both Fallen Empires, the flavor text on the confirmation button is a direct quote from BABYLON 5.
