#IndieGame generalist at Aetheric Games some of the time, and #GameDev lecturer at Edinburgh College other times. Undercover, queerly neurospicy mess, attempting to infiltrate the normals with a big coat and a fake moustache. Currently working on ... something new? #Edinburgh, #Scotland

Hey ! What do you call the kind of platform in a that you can jump up through, as opposed to the kind you would hit your head on?

Trying to find a better terminology than "jumpupable". 😅

Do you have a name you use?

Now Ahm just a simple country lawyah, but this "copyright" seems incredibly spurious. (1) You can't copyright a game mechanic; that would have to be a patent. Software patents are ridiculous, game patents especially so. But in any sane world, you'd get laughed out of the patent office for submitting such a basic, extant mechanic.

And...

Controversial opinion: in general, pixel art does not look better on CRT. I agree that often pixel art that was designed to take advantage of CRT fuzziness and colour often looks bad when rendered crisply on a flat screen, however, pixel art designed to take advantage of modern screens often looks way better than either.

I just learned that there was going to be a TV adaptation of series by Amazon and it was cancelled, which I learned by googling to see if anyone had ever talked about doing one.

And while I would looooove a good Culture TV show, I'm kind of glad it was cancelled, to be honest. 3 reasons 🧵

Thinking this morning about how Flash taught me OOP, in a special visual IDE, where the code objects you create are also art objects you create.

I'd tried to teach myself that stuff previously (without knowing what OOP was, I just knew that classes were a thing and at the time it seemed hard) but I didn't really get it until I was using AS3 to instanciate library symbols.

In fact, I still didn't really "get it" until some time later, learning C# or C++ and I was like "oh! it's like Flash!"

Welp, I suppose I needn't worry about SEO for aetheric-games.com .... Google just simply won't search for it. Searching for "aetheric games" returns results for "aesthetic games" no matter if you use the "search instead..." link, if you use quote marks, or even if you use "verbatim" mode. 🙄

The web has never lived up to its promise, but remember when it used to work kinda, maybe sometimes?

One thing I love about masto/fedi is how you can follow hashtags and that becomes your feed. It's great! You can basically design your own "algorithm".

One thing I don't like is how, like any social, anybody can tag anything with anything. So if I follow e.g. , I'll get some nuanced and interesting thoughts around game dev (awesome!), some WIP and light promotion from indies (cool!), and I might also get some lazy spam, thirsty selfies, way off-topic stuff, and batshit ranting (...hmmm)

I just heard a designer in a say, "it's not a short game: it's like 3 or 4 hours long." And at first I nodded and then I laughed out loud. I don't disagree! I think that 4 to 6 hours feels like a "normal" length to me. But it was funny to me to realise the disconnect between our perceptions as vs Teh Gamers. The majority of beginner game dev students I meet would say 4 hours is very short.

It's weird how people say that the summer solstice is the start of summer. It's clearly the middle - astronomically, ecologically and calendrically.

I'm bored with hyperbole.

"This movie was a disaster!"...no, it was just a bit less popular than some people might have hoped.

"This game is a horrible broken mess!" ...take a breath, it's just a bit buggy and not to your taste.

"The internet is over!" ...calm down, it's just some of the not-so-great websites you liked are a little bit more bad than they used to be.

There's plenty in the world to get het up about. Go and get angry about systemic oppression or climate injustice or something.

<the Games eXpo> where students & local will be showing their work on 31st May at @edinburghcoll, is coming together. (more details in 🧵! )

Here's a sneaky peek at The Tenth Suspect, a WIP murder mystery from the NC class. I'll show more next week as they continue finishing and polishing it!

I can absolutely see how a games journo with bills to pay, and their editor, dropping an inflammatory piece to kick up a whole heap of Angwy Gamewr Discourse, igniting abuse towards individual developers who are just interested in labour rights and having a fair job, instead of the big capital corporate strategies the gamers actually resent, and the execs themselves, ...could be quite good for ad rev. You know?

World needs critical thinking and media literacy. 🙃

I guess part of the mastodon experience is being pleased to find a person who you've followed elsewhere in the past, going to add them, and realising that you've found them on here several times before and you follow them already, but they just never post on here. 🤣

Sometimes in it feels like I can see a better idea that had to be left behind in the writers' room due to some kind of compromise. (Not hating or whining, I understand why compromises happen. 😁) e.g. I would bet that someone on SNW s2 said, what if our new engineer is an El-Aurian? Quirky but wise, and hidden on Earth for centuries. And someone said, ohnono, Picard has called dibs on Guinan (and Q, and Borg) lore, we can't touch El-Aurian canon. So they made up a different name.

College lecturers are on this week. College management had a process of ahem "targetted volunary severence" which are weasley-words for "mandatory redundancy". After some progress, at the last hurdle, they're digging their heels in about one last redundancy, so despite our many shows of good faith from EIS-FELA , here at the end of the semester, we strike!

I love the tags we have for sharing and discovering the games we create, like etc., it's neat! But something that really grinds my gears is when people try to "host" a tag. Like "it's # screenshotsaturday so reply below with your pics, and don't forget to like and boost my thread" ...No guy, that's not how that works. That's a very c-list twitter brand move, honestly.

theory: you can tell a game dev's age by whether they think "I write games" is something said by a programmer or by a narrative designer
