OK Maybe I just don't see ads often because I have them blocked so hard but the little box that shows ads in the CurseForge start up screen on Minecraft caught my eye. It's google adsense. I saw:

  • Ad from local college they want people to apply to teach STEM
  • Thriftbooks
  • Discount on makeup and brown foundation

I was disappointed there were no ads for antkeeping products. But this is CREEPY. Is this the current typical state of ads?

@futurebird One morning I sat with my son and his friend to watch a Formula 1 race. The mortgage ad featured a Black couple. The car ad focused on a Black driver. The food ads? Same demographic. I was wondering if there was something I didn’t know about Ferrari’s fan base, when I realized that my son’s friend was streaming it to my television from his laptop. While the scenes were a refreshing change for this white guy’s eyes, having the thoroughness of ad tailoring revealed was unsettling.

@Saltssaltgirl I recently read an article boosted by someone here in the Fediverse that suggests that he doesn’t actually persuade his followers. He gives them permission. That rings true to me.

When I leave teaching, it won't be because of the kids. The kids are the only reason I stay. I'm afraid they will feel like no one cares about them; so I stay.

But, I want to run. I want to know what's it's like to be appreciated by my superiors. I want people to follow through with promises. I want people to stop letting down our kids.

"They" wonder why there's a shortage of teachers, but I don't.

I frequently add tea to the food I cook:

  • I use any tea leaves I have to smoke chicken and duck and tofu with spices
  • I sometimes add oolong tea (the liquid) to soups and congees

I think of it as broth, almost.

It’s not that uncommon or radical, just perhaps poorly socialized or communicated in the western world. The Japanese also do it with ‘ochazuke’, and the items I mention above are actual things you can get at restaurants in some places.

Academic institutions - many institutions - just do not know how to respond to bad faith attacks. The game has changed. The opponents don’t care about facts, only optics. Communications teams must start to understand what they’re actually engaging with.

Today the lady behind the counter at the local burrito truck asked me if I had some time off for the holiday and I said "kinda" and she looked confused so I said "I work for myself so I'm always kinda working" and she said "oh what do you do?" I said "I grow hemp and make CBD stuff" and she said "oh you're interesting and mysterious" and then handed me a burrito.

And honestly it's the nicest thing a stranger has said to me in real life in a long time.

@StillIRise1963 In earlier eras, white people showed they were rich by being plump and pale. It meant they didn’t have to work in the fields and had plenty to eat. Now many strive to show that they have time and money to work out and to vacation in sunny places.

I usually shoot with only rangefinders and TLRs, except when I’m doing outdoorsy stuff

Nikon DSLR for birds (my birding lens is too big to carry around!), Nikonos for film BW pics. A much bigger and sportier rig than usual

    @victor I don’t want to jinx myself, but I don’t think I’ve yet seen any Fedi spam. I know that @dansup of Pixelfed has been working out blocking strategies and now you are helpfully quantifying the problem for me. It just seems strange to me, given that this is the one corner of my online life where I am not bombarded by spam. If I’m not on local feed, is it invisible to me?
