Just before I snapped this picture, it seriously took me a moment looking through the viewfinder to make sense of what I was seeing.

Like, what??

My is still going strong. Over this weekend, my total reached 57! According to eBird, I tend to report around 100-120 species during the course of the year, so having 57 already logged means I'm way ahead already. LOL

Birds added to my list:

Greater Yellowlegs
Spotted Towhee
Lesser Scaup
Ring-necked Duck
California Scrub-Jay
Orange-crowned Warbler
Western Bluebird
Bewick's Wren
Sharp-shinned Hawk
Downy Woodpecker
Bufflehead
Gadwall

@elaterite I only know the spot eBird shows north of Reno. Though my attempt to go see them was a failure cause they were SO FAR AWAY. I need to go visit a friend in El Centro, he knew exactly where to go find them.

@elaterite I follow Wendy on Bluesky, burrowing owls are so adorbs!!

Speaking of owls, the Rangers at Stillwater told me there's been, um, short eared? owls seen hunting near twilight out there. I know they have barn owls in the boxes (I scared one mama horribly cause she didn't see me through the hole until I was unfortunately too close. I kept waiting for some sign someone was home so I could stop, but didn't see anything until too late). And I see the great horned owls frequently. Be nice to get some other owl pictures.

Maybe one day I'll pay for the Eagles and Ag tours.

NevadaWolf,

@elaterite My understanding was the general area where the auto tour route reconnects with, uh, Hunter Rd? If you haven't been to their new office, it's just before you get to the town out there, nice white farmhouse on the north side of the road before you get to the Refuge.

Playing another live streaming chill music channel with a looping animated background. It shows a table with a laptop and coffee cup. The cup has a digital display showing the temp. When the temp drops, the table lights up briefly under the cup and the temp rises.

I know it's just a graphic, but a table that monitors and reheats my coffee would be awesome!

While walking this morning, saw the various rocks and grasses and leaves on the ground were coated in frost that sparkled in the early sunlight.

A small maple-like brown leaf laying on broken asphalt. The edges, veins, and stem are covered in a sparkling white frost.

Hmm, need a design for reflective stickers for a (currently) all black bicycle... here's where the lack-of-an eye for design is a problem, LOL. (they do make black reflective stickers, but I think adding some daylight bright colors will help on the safety front).

Yellow and purple and black airplane
Purple and orange and silver paint on a bicycle frame
Black and purple and orange and yellow on a bicycle farme

@ai6yr Tuck some UV lights up under the forks and stays, paint the rims with glow in the dark paint, viola TRON BIKE!

Holiday today that I didn't make any plans for, so just went out to look for more birds. Sunny and mild temps this morning let me drive around slowly with my window down. Stopped by two hot spots, the cemetery and a reservoir that was mostly iced over.

Did spot a lifer today, a Red-naped Sapsucker hammering away at a crack in a tree.

A grey and white Black-crowned Night Heron stands on a grey rock with one bright yellow leg, the other tucked up into the loose fluffy feathers of its body. The dark grey cap that gives it it's name stretches over the head and down the back and upper wings. A bright red eye with black spot in the middle looks out over a yellow and grey bill. Tan reeds and grasses with grey rocks lining the edge of the empty canal fill the background.
A slate grey, white, and brown Belted Kingfisher perches on the end of a grey stick used as a fence post. The black eye looks out over the long black bill, both gleaming in the sunlight. The grey-blue head feathers are all spiked upward, and a distinctive brown band across the upper part of the white chest and rust-red colored under the wings. This rust color on the flanks (and also across the chest on adult birds) indicates the female Belted Kingfisher.
A small grey Northern Mockingbird briefly lands on a narrow red twig within a winter bare bush. The bird has a short black beak and shining gold eye, white striped wings, and a long thin tail. The top of the head and back are a dark grey, while the throat and chest are a light grey.

This morning's breakfast buffet customers.

While yes, I have seen all of these birds in this area, I've not seen several of them in my yard in town. I suspect a rather gifted starling...

Per MerlinID:
House Sparrow
Yellow-rumped Warbler
European Starling
House Finch
Dark-eyed Junco
Northern Flicker
Mourning Dove
Song Sparrow
Cedar Waxwing
American Goldfinch
White-crowned Sparrow
Brown-headed Cowbird
California Quail
Great-tailed Grackle
Killdeer
Western Meadowlark

NevadaWolf,
@NevadaWolf@birds.town avatar

@ai6yr Everything down to Mourning Dove I saw yesterday, so those are frequent visitors. The next group down to Brown-headed Cowbird have been in my yard at least once but haven't seen them recently so they may be in the area.

The rest I haven't seen in my yard despite Merlin insisting I always have Killdeer and Great-Tailed Grackles. They are local, I can find them easily, just not out my front window. Them being listed makes me look at Merlin with suspicion. 🤨

Yesterday I found a nearby neighborhood that had a lot of Mountain Bluebirds flittering between the trees and roof tops. Today, I went to go get their picture and the pics of anyone else I saw along the way.

A bright blue Mountain Bluebird clings to the bare red branch of a tree, black feet gripped around the wood. The sunlight shines on the bright blue wings, blue back and head, and pale blue-white chest. A black bead of an eye glints in the light. The clean blue desert sky fills the background, highlighting how blue the bird is.
A blue Mountain Bluebird stands on the top of a copper sign post, thin black feet spread wide on the sloped metal. The bird is turned towards the camera, the pale blue-grey chest topped with the blue head and only a small portion of the bright blue wings visible over the shoulder. The long white underside of the tail extends back. A black eye glints in the sunlight as it looks out over the narrow black beak. A pale blue desert sky filled the background, almost the same color as the chest feathers.
A brilliantly blue Mountain Bluebird stands on the sloped roof of a house, it's bright blue wings, blue back and head, and pale blue chest lit by sunlight. A black eye glints in the light, while the narrow black beak extends forward. The clean blue desert sky fills the background, revealing how blue the bird is in comparison.

I took over a hundred pictures today as I drove around the Carson Lake area looking for Snow Geese (reportedly over 500 somewhere in the area) and I'm not happy with, really, any of them. So very few are actually in focus. And I can't tell when looking at the preview on the back of the camera cause the image is so small and my glasses make it hard to focus up close (it's easier to see under the lenses when looking up close. I think I need trifocals or something).

So, here's one of the few good ones, though I really wish the vertical ones I took with the reflection had come out.

I went for a short hike up to Chickadee Ridge above Lake Tahoe this morning. I've lived in the Reno area for >30yrs & never hiked up there, I guess because of the crowds. It's a popular spot because the chickadees will feed out of your hand. But today I didn't find any chickadees at the top. Lower down I saw a couple, saw one woman trying to get them to eat out of her hand but she wasn't having much luck so I didn't bother to setup to make detailed photos of the birds. It was a nice hike though.

NevadaWolf,
@NevadaWolf@birds.town avatar

@elaterite I keep meaning to hike up there with some seeds and hope for the patience to entice some little one to come check out my offering.

@ai6yr Do you have any bots that pull the updates from CalTrans Districts 3 or 10? Your share of the rock slide is the first I've heard of any issues on 50. And I probably should pay attention with travel this weekend.

Damn, and I thought the casino was bad for demanding employees work when sick.

Last year, boss was so ill he took the day off. A higher up demanded that he come in for a mandatory meeting the next day.

Just now, he tried telling his boss he's sick and leaving. His boss instead gave him a task that's due today before he can leave.

(I'm so glad I brought in the new filter and can have it running quietly on high by the door. Everyone keeps coming to work when sick! Stop it!)

The woman across the hall from my office brought us a little plate of homemade fudge for Christmas.

I'm not sure if my willpower is enough to resist devouring it before lunch.
