Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

  1. This morning there were goldfinches in the tree out the back
  2. The daffodils in the back garden were delightfully bright in the morning fog, they immediately gave me hope for sunnier times
  3. The sun came out this afternoon and was beautiful

Contrary to what I was taught about history as a child, I now firmly believe that Europeans didn't export civilisation, we did our level best to destroy it.

Every place we went we took greed, individualism and an erroneous sense of superiority.

That is our legacy. And now the people we bore down upon are living with most of the consequences of our actions, both historical & current.

I know I complain about Word alot, but that’s because it’s absolutely fucking awful.

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren

Word is a sodding bastard and I hate it with every fibre of my being.

I swear it was better in the '95 version!

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren

I have spent a LOT of time recently yelling things like "You fucking dickhead, I told you I want that there, not at the bottom of page 7"

Or, "You asked me if I wanted to add a caption, why do you think I now want the caption for the picture 2 paragraphs above the picture, wanker"

Etc, etc, etc, etc.

It thinks it knows best, but it does not.

At least you could turn Clippy off.

Unfortunately I have to enter my assignments in .doc or .docx format. I should try open office, but I spend so long arguing with Word that there isn't time.

Can anyone point me in the direction of information regarding increased libido during ? It's impossible to search for online as you just get a gazillion bits of information about the exact opposite.

Psst, (non-gender specific) lads,

I'm not sure, and I could be wrong, but

and hear me out here,

I'm not sure that is actually about owls.

No idea what it is for, but apparently, not owls? Who knew??

Watching the first Taskmaster Champion of Champions, and there’s little more delightful than the absolutely insane way Bob Mortimer’s brain works.

Also worth looking up the "Would I lie to you" clips with Bob on. His interactions with David Mitchell are wonderful.

After just a year of hobbling about on a sore knee, I’ve finally made a physio referral.

It’s been x-rayed, and apparently there’s nothing wrong with it. But being woken up at night by it suggests that there is something…

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren

Except that pain doesn't necessarily mean there is anything physically wrong.

@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Fellow folks who have a formal diagnosis:

When you received your diagnosis, was it a massive anticlimax?

I ask, because my kid got his yesterday and told me that it felt underwhelming, and I distinctly remember feeling the same way when receiving my own, four years ago.

There wasn’t this great moment of relief, just a calm, almost bored psychiatrist saying “Yes, it sounds like ADHD. Let’s try you on this medication and see how you get on”

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren

It wasn't until I took meds and the stimulant medication sent me to sleep that I believed I might not have tricked the psychiatrist into giving me a diagnosis.

But when I was told, yeah, it was completely underwhelming

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren

I must admit to really wanting that moment of sudden clarity, but yes, as you describe it's been more of a gradual realisation of an ability to do stuff rather than scroll forever.

I was 46 when I first took meds. There's a whole lifetime of woulda shoulda coulda I'm constantly trying to ignore!

Big generalisation incoming, but the numbers kinda hold up... A thing that I never can work out is why my grandparents' generation (born 1910s) never trusted the govt or establishment, but my parents' generation (born 1940s) believe whatever they're told by a man in a suit. What changed?

PetraPhoenix,
@PetraPhoenix@mendeddrum.org avatar

@ametonym

The ones born in the 1910s lived through 2 wars, and a pandemic, and remembered the reality of it. The ones born in the 40s were mostly too young to remember the wars and we're brought up 'knowing' that we were brilliant, because of winning the war and how great of our leaders to do this.
