I realized what makes Mastodon, and Bluesky, and Post, and Notes seem so odd. It’s the complete absence of the “if you won’t pretend this shit sandwich is sirloin it shows how biased you are/how much Trump broke you/what an echo chamber you’re in.”

One of the kids has COVID and lost smell and taste. Wife bought special deserts for our 26th anniversary the other day but didn’t buy any for the kids. Kid complained. Wife [elaborate shrug]: “It’s not like you could taste it anyway.” That’s why I married her, readers.

How do we decide what a "true threat" is when we have no cultural consensus on what a "reasonable person" is?

The term is wildly overused, but THIS is a heckler’s veto: the authorities imposing restrictions on speech based on anticipated hostile reactions to it.

Popehat,

But this is just the latest in a long list of times I, like an old man yelling at a cloud, shake my fist at people refusing to accept that words mean things.

Popehat,

For instance, I will be in my cold, cold grave before I accept that literally means figuratively just because a lot of lazy careless fucks use it that way.

A journalist is writing a story about the trend I've talked about before -- defamation threats and lawsuits against women telling type stories of their experiences.

The journalist is interested in talking to people who've received such threats. If anyone is interested email me. I can put you together with the journalist. I've talked to her and she's serious about the story and has a good outlet for it.

Recorded this week’s Serious Trouble. This week: Tucker Carlson, E. Jean Carroll, MIke Lindell, Hunter Biden, and Ken gets his Woody Allen/Marshal McLuhan moment. Watch for it tomorrow.

Kid2’s boyfriend — a very nice young man - recognized the computer game I was playing (a ludicrously overcomplicated strategy game called Europa Universalis IV) and we had a brief conversation about it and I could see her dying a little inside.

Apparently they didn’t even let Tucker Carlson record a final episode to wrap up plot lines and now we’ll never know if they caught those pooping Gypsies

This is exhausting. I wasn’t trying to be difficult, I was trying to, I thought helpfully, explain why I didn’t use those tags. But this sort of thing happens like half the time I post photos, and it makes it really unrewarding to take the time to share.

Please respect artists’ choices for how they describe their own work.

So long, thanks for all the frozen fish. Not so much for all the unhinged white nationalist propaganda.

FIRE notes that TPUSA targeted 61 professors in 2021. FIRE doesn’t note that it sponsored a TPUSA “free speech” event in 2017. One of my criticisms of FIRE is that it occasionally has difficulty distinguishing between free speech supporters and people who support speech they agree with.

Popehat,

@SapphicLawyer it’s litigation history doesn’t support that. But I believe it makes bad PR and emphasis choices sometimes.

Popehat,

@AriCohn @SapphicLawyer well sure but you’re an arch-conservative

  • Popehat,

@Teri_Kanefield The only problem with them coming here is that I’m not sure there are people here who would shout at them thinking they are the actual Supreme Court and that was my favorite part.

Are there any national organizations that are supporting teachers who are targeted by anti-LGBT extremist groups for being supportive of LGBT students?

Serious Trouble episode (with a re-recorded section after settlement) about Dominion dropping today. We didn’t talk about:

    • No trial result would have had the judge ordering Fox to apologize on air
*No trial result would have resulted in Fox being punished for damage to democracy
*. No trial result could have ”established facts” as true or false for all purposes in America
If your expectations for the legal system are not reality-based you’re going to be consistently disappointed.
    Popehat,

@kthornton No. “We should have a system that can deliver more” is a rational criticism. “Dominion should not have settled, instead it should have insisted on [things the current law can’t deliver]” is silly and irrational.

Reminder, on Mastodon, you can save notes on people you interact with... so the next time you interact with them you can be reminded of what you thought of them last time.

    Popehat,

@mmasnick this is relevant to my interests.

    Popehat, to FreeSpeech

#FirstAmendment #FreeSpeech It’s time for me to update by “Free Speech Tropes” post, written previously for Popehat and Atlantic, that identifies common slogans/cliches/arguments about the First Amendment that are wrong or misleading — like “fire in a crowded theater” and “hate speech is not free speech.” I have some new ones to add to the mix (like “it’s in the school handbook so it’s not a First Amendment issue”) but taking suggestions for other common bad arguments/tropes/slogans.
