The kind of professor I’m trying to be at university:

EDIT: just to clarify, this is a screenshot found offline, not from one of my student. I’m more direct as I tell my students that "piracy is sharing knowledge and sharing knowledge is ethical and what I’m paid to do so please use libgen.rs and sci-hub"

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ploum

Given academia's emphasis on respect for intellectual property, I'm not sure directing students to a repository of stolen material sends quite the right message. Yes, textbooks are a grift. That's why I never use them. All materials needed for my courses are online for free, legal access by anyone, or else I write them myself.

Thanks for the personal touch, much appreciated.

Agreed that being a hypocrite doesn't invalidate one's argument. But my observation wasn't about the argument. Part of Banksy's appeal is their counterculturalism (or so I'm told; I find Banksy boring). Yet here's Banksy, building the brand by making a counterculturalist argument that is utterly self-referential.

It's the same "I'm on your side" trick Trump uses to win undeserved support. That was my point.

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@DanielEriksson @kuba

Well, "Banksy" is an internationally known brand, ubiquitous and uninvited, selling its products for in excess of US$10m per unit.

I don't seem to be ignoring anything.

The theft of $30 million in cash from a Los Angeles (Sylmar) processing and storage facility on Sunday night is of course a very serious crime. However, one can't help but have a certain admiration for the style shown. So far no identifiable traces left. No alarms were triggered. Nobody hurt. Quite the 1960s heist film plot in real life.

I think we do it by emphasizing the roll of the editor instead of the publisher. Same reason I still pay for science fiction when so much of it is available on line for free: I don't have time to find the good stuff on my own. So, I am willing to pay to have someone I trust make my editorial choices for me.

Also, we do it by admitting that people should get paid for doing something useful, much as we hate that idea.

One of the things I've learned reading ~1,500 research reports on is the importance of REALLY reading them and not just relying on the conclusion. Here's an example: This study finds "there was no evidence of an association between COVID-19 and adverse perinatal outcomes." Great, huh? Not so fast: "COVID-19 in the first trimester was associated with fetal death, RR=2.36 (95% CI 1.04, 5.36)." That means fetal death is 236% more likely! Crazy conclusion! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38604636/

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@augieray

The conclusion says "in the OVERALL sample there was no evidence," [emphasis added] but also says, "severe COVID-19 may increase the risk of some perinatal outcomes, with the first trimester potentially being a high-risk period."

That appears to me to be consistent with the data reported in more detail in the body of the report, but this ain't my area, for sure.

It just never ceases to amaze me how violently, like clockwork, police respond to left leaning or left led protests. Every single time.

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

The police took virtually no action against a massive white-supremacist "demonstration" several years ago in Charlottesville, VA. One of the participants deliberately rammed his car into some observers, one of whom was a woman named Heather Heyer, who died as a result.

If the police had acted to break up the event as readily as they are responding to these campus protests, Ms. Heyer would still be alive.

Why do you suppose they didn't?

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

Would have been nice to see something like this kind of police response in Charlottesville before Heather Heyer got killed.

Not just an ordinary citizen, but an actual government election official commits an act of fraud by using fake identities to obtain ballots she isn't supposed to get. Upon conviction, she is looking at a maximum of five years in jail.

If any old person commits an act of fraud by using fake identities to obtain money from a bank they aren't supposed to get, they are looking at 25-30 years in jail.

How did money become more valuable than democracy?

So Wendy's is emphasizing that their CEO did NOT say they would use "surge pricing" (which sets higher prices at some times and lower prices at others). They insist that all he said was they would use "dynamic pricing" (which sets higher prices at some times and lower prices at others).

Obviously, we were all worked up over nothing.

Question for Science Fiction readers: What was the first SF book you remember reading, and would you recommend it to young readers today (why or why not)?

My answer: "The Beyond," by Jean and Jeff Sutton. I would not recommend it, as it is quite sexist in how it portrays women (a slight surprise, having been written by a husband-and-wife pair).

I did love it in 1967, at the age of eight. It just hasn't aged well.
