The House Oversight Committee's members who were drunk (not necessarily all of them) were unable to get their stuff together during a failed attempt to vote on holding Merrick Garland in contempt of congress.

When do we get to vote on holding Marjorie Taylor Greene in contempt of the people of the United States?

I think we do it by emphasizing the roll of the editor instead of the publisher. Same reason I still pay for science fiction when so much of it is available on line for free: I don't have time to find the good stuff on my own. So, I am willing to pay to have someone I trust make my editorial choices for me.

Also, we do it by admitting that people should get paid for doing something useful, much as we hate that idea.

Thanks for the personal touch, much appreciated.

Agreed that being a hypocrite doesn't invalidate one's argument. But my observation wasn't about the argument. Part of Banksy's appeal is their counterculturalism (or so I'm told; I find Banksy boring). Yet here's Banksy, building the brand by making a counterculturalist argument that is utterly self-referential.

It's the same "I'm on your side" trick Trump uses to win undeserved support. That was my point.

It just never ceases to amaze me how violently, like clockwork, police respond to left leaning or left led protests. Every single time.

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Would have been nice to see something like this kind of police response in Charlottesville before Heather Heyer got killed.

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

The police took virtually no action against a massive white-supremacist "demonstration" several years ago in Charlottesville, VA. One of the participants deliberately rammed his car into some observers, one of whom was a woman named Heather Heyer, who died as a result.

If the police had acted to break up the event as readily as they are responding to these campus protests, Ms. Heyer would still be alive.

Why do you suppose they didn't?

One of the things I've learned reading ~1,500 research reports on is the importance of REALLY reading them and not just relying on the conclusion. Here's an example: This study finds "there was no evidence of an association between COVID-19 and adverse perinatal outcomes." Great, huh? Not so fast: "COVID-19 in the first trimester was associated with fetal death, RR=2.36 (95% CI 1.04, 5.36)." That means fetal death is 236% more likely! Crazy conclusion! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38604636/

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@augieray

The conclusion says "in the OVERALL sample there was no evidence," [emphasis added] but also says, "severe COVID-19 may increase the risk of some perinatal outcomes, with the first trimester potentially being a high-risk period."

That appears to me to be consistent with the data reported in more detail in the body of the report, but this ain't my area, for sure.

The theft of $30 million in cash from a Los Angeles (Sylmar) processing and storage facility on Sunday night is of course a very serious crime. However, one can't help but have a certain admiration for the style shown. So far no identifiable traces left. No alarms were triggered. Nobody hurt. Quite the 1960s heist film plot in real life.

Oh how useful text-emphasis would be if it didn’t affect line height.

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aral

I have always been frustrated by the lack of consensus on how to emphasize flat text.

Is it:

I am NOT gonna take it anymore?

or

I am not gonna take it anymore?

or

I am not gonna take it anymore?

Caps kinda work in the example above, because I'm shouting.

They not so good when you're just being emphatic, as in:

Crossing by covered wagon took six months. Today, we can fly across in six HOURS.

What do you use?

World Central Kitchen founder's response

“The air strikes on our convoy were not just some unfortunate mistake in the fog of war. It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the [Israeli military]. It was also the direct result of his [PM Netanyahu’s] government’s policy to squeeze humanitarian aid to desperate levels.”

I no longer care if Israel's slaughter of innocent people is on purpose or by accident. Even if it is all accidental, it all looks the same as if it were on purpose.

If it is on purpose, Netanyahu and his commanders are criminals, and must be stopped.

If it is by accident, Netanyahu and his commanders are incompetent, and must be stopped.

Either way, they must be stopped.

Writing to my federal officials today: no more aid to Israel.

The highest paid WNBA player makes under $1M a year. WNBA and NBA teams play 5 players to a side.

Ice Cube has a 3 on 3 basketball league called "The Big 3" that is made up mostly of retired NBA players. Ice Cube just offered Caitlin Clark a $5M contract to play in the Big 3. 🤯

Many WNBA players play in other leagues during their off-season, in places like Russia and Greece. The Big 3 plays during a time of the year when there is no WNBA season, so she can play in both leagues.

Professor_Stevens,
@Professor_Stevens@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mekkaokereke

Caitlin is awesome. So was Diamond Miller when she played college ball (go Terps!) and she is great with the Lynx.

My wife and I go to every Maryland home game. It's huge fun and, imho, the women play better ball than the men do. They are slightly less rough-and-tumble, but noticeably more technical (you don't see as many jump stops in a men's game).

Lowest NBA pay is $1.1M/yr. Highest WNBA is $200k/yr. The owners won't invest in promotions.

It's just do dumb.

Looking through Linkedin and all the bad managers I've had seem to be cast from the same mould:

  • Into "AI", but gesture towards doomerim to look reasonable
  • Believes "AI" coders will replace programmers
  • Pretending they weren't into "blockchain" a few months ago
  • Uses trendy PKM du jour (Aboard is replacing Notion among the MBA types)
  • Uses passive voice to gloss over the mistakes they've made in the past
  • Older ones talk about Web 2.0 as if it wasn't a bullshit marketing term at the time

So, if you expect to lose a judgment in New York, and have billions of dollars in assets, but just don't want to put up the entire amount pending appeal, make sure you lose very, very bigly. That way, you can whine about how your record-setting fraud is too expensive to pay for, and you'll get a break.

For the rest of us, losing relatively small amounts that we nonetheless still cannot pay means having our property seized and our wages garnished.

So my $50 cab ride from downtown SF to the airport ended with the driver handing me his phone so I could pay the fare with my card. Helpfully, it provided three buttons in the UI for me to choose a tip percentage.

My options were: 20%, 30%, and 40%.

Forty percent? Really? I'm going to volunteer to make my $50 ride into a $70 ride?

No.

Tip is 15%. Or, on the UI he gave me, it is "Custom," where you get to figure out the exact amount yourself (I tend to round up, so he got 15.9%).

Tip is 15%.
