Could be reverse engineered and federated as an open protocol?

That would be interesting, but we already have XMPP. What are you missing from ICQ? Was it even encrypted?

I've been experimenting with a notes page on my blog (https://kevquirk.com/notes) and cross-posting to socials.

It’s getting tedious already, so I’m not sure this one will stick…

I still love your interface design. Super clean, contrasty, and readable.

If you ever felt like grabbing a soap box and preaching to modern UI designers, I'd definitely come cheer you on. ;)

Confession of an Amiga enthusiast back in the day: I always liked the black and white hires mode of the Atari ST, which to me looked slicker than even the original Macintosh. And I still love that "printed page" experience of environments like Medley Interlisp.

RL_Dane, (edited )
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@amoroso

I never saw an ST back in the day, but I heard about it, and I've obviously seen a decent bit of them online lately.

The thing I just can't get over is the big honking overscan borders. They're HUGE!

I don't mean to diss someone else's favorite machines. It's just something that makes me scratch my head.

What do users think about the borders, and did they ever adjust them to get more screen real estate?

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@amoroso

You're right, it doesn't look too much worse than a C64, although it doesn't compare well to the Amiga.

I'm guessing Jack wanted to make sure that people hooking theirs up to a TV didn't lose any part of the picture.

I do wonder if it was adjustable though. (If the Atari monitors had a picture size adjustment)

TIL about licensing..

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Copyfarleft

Like the Peer Production license:

> "The peer production license is an example of the Copyfair type of license, in which only other commoners, cooperatives and nonprofits can share and re-use the material, but not commercial entities intent on making profit through the commons without explicit reciprocity."

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Peer_Production_License

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@smallcircles

I wonder how that compares to Bruce Perens' recent efforts towards post-open-source licensing (i.e., also putting certain stipulations on commercial use)

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@smallcircles @interpeer

Bruce has a fedi account, but I don't know how active he is.

Here's an article from December describing what he's trying to build, license-wise: https://www.theregister.com/2023/12/27/bruce_perens_post_open/

Here's the draft (not yet lawyer-reviewed) license: https://perens.com/2024/03/08/post-open-license-first-draft/

Satya Nadella says Windows PCs will have a photographic memory feature called Recall that will remember and understand everything you do on your computer by taking constant screenshots. This is a great reason to ditch windows altogether. Switch to 🧑‍💻 They don’t care about your privacy or safety anymore and not hiding it either. Is it me, or does macOS have a ton of ways that a forensics examiner can easily tell when files were accessed? Be it Spotlight caches, the .fseventsd log which writes when files were modified, oddball permissions. Macs are a gold mine if captured and examined. Don't forget the "._" files that are thrown around everywhere as a way to add attributes.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

Just wait until MS implements its replay feature for windows. It'll constantly be monitoring all user activity.

Bet you a quid all that crap gets reported to employers via group policy/AD voodoo.

#introduction

I worked in IT for a couple decades, burned out, went back to college and got my bachelor's in literature. Went to grad school, burnt out again.
Life's an adventure.

I love linux, sci-fi, people of all walks, and Jesus. I'm not preachy.

Been using linux off and on since 1997, steadily since 2000, and constantly since 2019. :D

Big believer in free and open source software. Linux is freedom.

Manjaro is my pragmatic distro of choice, but Debian is home. <3
