Holidays is when you figure out that burrata is perfect with white and yellow nectarines and (real!) Aceto Balsamico, and that buffalo mozzarella really needs some (real!) cold-pressed olive oil and a dash of salt on top of that.

"lots of travel" is the realization that your shower habits at home have fully adapted to how North American showers work.

I.e. leaving the water running while getting out of the water stream to soap up as you're used to never touching the controls lest you make the water ice cold or scalding hot. And that "water on/off" is directly tied to temperature control.

Today, I faltered and failed to follow the first commandment of CA glue: Always Keep Moving Your Fingers

Yet, I had heeded the second commandment: Always Have Acetone Next To You

And all became well.

If you are awake, there are as far south as Munich and apparently Texas right now. At least in Munich you need a long exposure, it's not bright enough for the naked eyes.

Another one for the , , and maybe bubble:

What, if any, are the considerations when selecting a reasonably priced decent quality cleaning bath?

Use case would be to clean and degrease/deoil small tools, glasses, watches, etc. Maybe a second unit some day to experiment with e.g. wood-chip infused milk; that second unit would remain food-safe.

I didn't get much farther than "probably stainless steel, and correct volume" -- and select that from eBay?

Note to self: do not, under any circumstances, clean the inside of your brand new spice mill with your finger.

But I have a chili and a spice mill now so that's a plus.

: it's today (depending on your time zone). We'll get through it..

But it also means @ircpuzzles is running another puzzle competition on @liberachat -- while I don't organize it any more, I hear it's still fun, so maybe check that out.

On a whim, I tested a hypothesis: "infosec happens on Mastodon." Consider :

is surfacing a lot of primary and secondary technical sources. Not exclusively, but with high signal to noise.

seems to have a huge portion of Japanese discourse (might be bad search filters) but nothing groundbreaking

is very meta, pulling the topic into whatever context the author cares about, with no primary and few secondary sources

The bubble really did migrate here. Nice.

Hot take: events in the US whole are struggling while they are growing in the EU and it's due to a combination of a generally lower speed of EU companies and thus less impact of interest rate increases and taking up all the remaining travel budget for the US.

All the while, EU is turning into the European -- the majority of the keynotes long have and it's now the place for business meetings almost back to back.

How do you detect a gaggle of system administrators working at a classic German Systemhaus (one-stop contract partner acting as system integrator, operator, hoster, hardware vendor, consultant, and aaS all rolled into one) at ?

They all wear clothing.

(He writes, wearing ES pants, shirt, and two ES jackets clipped onto/in his backpack)

As per usual, I'll be at next week. If you always had a question or just wanted to meet, hit me up.

For the first time in many many years I don't have to give a single talk, so I will amble back and forth between customer meetings and hanging out at the booth.

And we'll have the Mk4 for swag on site. I preprinted roughly two spools into coins, earrings, and keychain ornaments on my XL.

If it seems as if I am posting more and more mundane than usual that's because I do.

After two months of waves of more intense pain than most everyone who is reading this has or will ever experience in their lives, yes that apparently includes childbirth and yes that's fucked up, I will finally go onto the path of improvement tomorrow.

I am in mental overdrive and almost giddy with happiness and excitement.

So there, that's why.

My electric toothbrush has a small, useless OLED which

  • Less than two minutes: smirks at you disappointedly
  • Run for two+ minutes: smiles at you
  • Run for three+ minutes: big smile with starry eyes
  • Switches itself off after five minutes

If it runs for four+ minutes, it gives you the same disappointed smirk.

I care very little about what my toothbrush "thinks" about me, but what person designed it that way...?

Related life hack: read while brushing. Five minutes just zap by.

I'm largely out of Wago 224-112 and am now torn between waiting for the (hopefully inevitable) release of a polycarbonate see-through successor along the lines of Wago 221-* and Wago 2273-* or getting the old stuff now.

I won't need any new ones for years so there's clear upside to waiting, BUT I might forget and not have any when I need them...

Question for the or maybe bubble:

If I have a relais rated for switching 20 A at 230VAC, can I use the same relais for switching 20A at 24VDC? My intuition is yes, but I can't seem to be able to find a clear answer as the Internet is littered with discussions about using AC for DC switching and vice versa whereas my interest is on the "it's already switched" side.

I'd like a way to mute people on Mastodon for a month or half a year; many are not toxic enough for an indefinite mute, but draining enough that a week feels too short.

I'm in the market for a small, reasonably priced and reasonably powerful for home use. support would be a definite plus but not a hard requirement. Being able to run from USB-C and/or built-in battery is a requirement.

It seems the Miniware DS213 is still the state of the art here, but it seems to run via micro-USB which is just annoying. Any others I should consider?

Who wants to host a future in (or elsewhere?) or speak at one of them? Target venue size is usually ~50 people, depending on city.
