I have a new laptop, X1 Carbon Gen 11 i7-1355U (sadly no ARM, probably my last machine with x64), 32 GiB RAM -- and I wanted a fast SSD.

So I got myself a Samsung 990 2 TB.

badblocks -sw writes at a sustained 1.5 - 1.7 GB/s, and reads at a sustained 0.9 GB/s. The datasheet of the disk says 7.5 GB/s read & 6.9 GB/s write.

So... my disk is not the bottleneck in this disk test.

I wouldn't have believed this to be possible just a few years ago.

Except for layer 1 stuff, we're pretty much done with shopping and ordering for the new local network and server setup. Almost everything under under direct control has been scheduled for upgrades or replacement.

We're using largely refurbished hardware because it's easier on the environment and because we don't need that much local oomph compared to e.g. .

in the scene:

During @fosdem kickoff on 2023-08-26 we built up a tent against the rain. The tent was old and the alumin[i]um poles and steel springs / locking nubs partially rusted away.

I have been walking around with metal shavings in both hands and almost all fingers ever since. It's driving me insane. How can I get them out? They are too small to see, glue, magnets, and pulling cream didn't work.

Halp?

The Pixel 7 series really needs a way to fully disable macro and macro detection, plus the laser distance meter. Or just manual overrides/adjustment for focus.
Train, car, and plane windows are usually at least somewhat dirty, and I missed many a good shot due to the phone focusing on whatever, but not the scenery.

It seems Linus is not the only kernel maintainer who needs anger management coaching these days.

kernel is planning to flood the zone with shit. Every bug fixed gets its own : https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/2024021619-barrack-shack-206c@gregkh/T/

Yes, fixed bug. So all current and LTS kernels which are still maintained will drown in CVEs with every release, and the easy fix for an overworked engineer at some downstream is to deliberately ship with a kernel that's just out of maintenance.

I want to wire up a bunch of sensors throughout the ; it seems Matter is the way to go now.

What SoC do I want to buy for this? ESP32 is my go-to, but it's too heavy and power-hungry for living off of an AA battery or two for any amount of time.

Boosts appreciated.

Weird observation of the day: hikers in the US don't greet each other. They just walk past and stare.

Also, hiking a big figure of eight around Muir Woods over 5.5 hours with at least 1600 meters climbed in total on a small bottle of non-sugared Gatorade.. you simply stop sweating after some time. Most exhausted I've been since prepandemic times. Pretty nice.

Sometimes I hate computers...

My desktop was having weirder and weirder boot and stability issues. Removed power for all caps to drain, reseated RAM, etc. And then I noticed that the RGB LEDs they put onto the board were still lit...

It's connected to a PoE switch, could that - nope.

Unplugged more and more and suddenly the lights went off.

It was a random USB cable; that's weird... sat there thinking for a bit, not looking forward to tracing all cables, then it hit me...

For the last decade or so it's been an open secret in network operator circles that has been captured by greedy people who put ego and profit over stability.

Letting .dev be registered by Google was arguably stupid. Yes it's a snappy name and people clearly desire it, but it was also clear that there was plenty of internal use which would break.

Cool, instead of the audio drama "Die drei ???" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Investigators , Amazon Music reproducably plays seemingly random audio porn via Sonos.

Fun for the whole family!

Get the best electric toothbrush your budget allows (one or two models under the top model is usually good) and read the news or whatever during your brush. OralB iO switches itself off after 5 minutes. Ask me how I know ;)

I need the help of the bubble to understand a debate I had: is there a difference between "a proton" and "a hydrogen ion (without neutrons)"? Put differently, can a single proton fly around without being a hydrogen ion? Or are all single protons also atomic nuclei at the same time? Is there a difference in how long each could exist?

Context: is it precisely correct to say "all the protons in LHC are hydrogen ions"? (Ignore lead ions here)

I'm largely out of Wago 224-112 and am now torn between waiting for the (hopefully inevitable) release of a polycarbonate see-through successor along the lines of Wago 221-* and Wago 2273-* or getting the old stuff now.

I won't need any new ones for years so there's clear upside to waiting, BUT I might forget and not have any when I need them...

Another one for the , , and maybe bubble:

What, if any, are the considerations when selecting a reasonably priced decent quality cleaning bath?

Use case would be to clean and degrease/deoil small tools, glasses, watches, etc. Maybe a second unit some day to experiment with e.g. wood-chip infused milk; that second unit would remain food-safe.

I didn't get much farther than "probably stainless steel, and correct volume" -- and select that from eBay?

Nuclear hot take: part of the reason why has seen less press coverage is because journalists tend to have a narcissist strain which played a part in preventing them from leaving the endorphins of Shitter behind

Without hard data I kind of guess that most Congress coverage and conversations happened on Mastodon and that this has made Congress largely invisible to this bubble

Restarting after several years will also have broken some routines and timing is not awesome for work travel either
