I'm sorry Slack, you're doing fucking WHAT with user DMs, messages, files, etc? I'm positive I'm not reading this correctly.

@RichiH@chaos.social avatar

@Quinnypig The opt-out is also weasel-wordy, as you can opt out from Global models -- are there non-global ones?

If you are covered under the GDPR, Article 28 allows you to audit them to a reasonable degree and request a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA/TIA) under Article 35.

Google is too big to fail, and yet they seem to be failing at basic things they used to do well (like search) while removing useful features (like cache) and adding a bunch of crap nobody needs or wants.

Want to know if a given domain name shows up anywhere in search? Well screw you, we're not going to tell you that anymore, but here's 1,400 completely useless and irrelevant results that could possibly have some info (but don't). When the search engine could have done what it's done for years, and admit that it doesn't know WTF you're talking about and say "no results found." Now it just makes shit up if it doesn't know the answer.

Hey cool! My search result shows the term I was looking for is present on 7 websites. Shoot! None of them are online anymore. How about showing us your cached version of the site, you know the one that was used to create this search result? Oh wait, no, you can't see that anymore. Why? Here's Danny Sullivan's dismissive and mystifying explanation: "“It was meant for helping people access pages when way back, you often couldn’t depend on a page loading,” Sullivan wrote on X. “These days, things have greatly improved. So, it was decided to retire it.”

Want software? Great, Google will serve a malicious ad on top that looks a lot like an organic search result but which is paid for by scammers and installs malware.

@RichiH@chaos.social avatar

@briankrebs Today, I noticed that they have largely stopped giving you a "maps" button when searching for an address. They still show the small map thing to the right, but you can't click through to maps any more either.

Nothing happens when you click the mini-map.

I don't know how many layers have to fail for that to make it into prod...

Dear bubble:

I am looking for the original advertisement of either Google Docs or potentially Google Chromebooks, strongly believing it's the former.

It was an ad in which someone wrote some words while walking counterclockwise through an office setup, destroying several laptops and showing that the written words had already been synced to the next device about to be used and destroyed.

Edit 2: thanks @HeNeArXn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm-Vnx58UYo !

Except for layer 1 stuff, we're pretty much done with shopping and ordering for the new local network and server setup. Almost everything under under direct control has been scheduled for upgrades or replacement.

We're using largely refurbished hardware because it's easier on the environment and because we don't need that much local oomph compared to e.g. .

(Long-ish thread see below)

RichiH,
@RichiH@chaos.social avatar

Anyway, we finally have stable enough planning to do ALL the upgrades now, and we're grasping that chance.

Attending and doing a small part to run that network (mainly Observability and teardown as per usual) was already great. Having come right after is awesome.

If you see me, I will be wearing a as per usual, but I am fine with fistbumps, shaking hands, and hugs depending on how well we know each other.

See you soon :)

On a whim, I tested a hypothesis: "infosec happens on Mastodon." Consider :

is surfacing a lot of primary and secondary technical sources. Not exclusively, but with high signal to noise.

seems to have a huge portion of Japanese discourse (might be bad search filters) but nothing groundbreaking

is very meta, pulling the topic into whatever context the author cares about, with no primary and few secondary sources

The bubble really did migrate here. Nice.

RichiH, to opensource
@RichiH@chaos.social avatar

It seems that over on Shitter, a random VC/executive tech bro of the day is trying to redefine "Open Source" yet again. Three different people tried to make me care about this.

And while on a technical level the answer is super simple -- there is a commonly accepted set of easily applied tests the passing of which determines if it is, in fact, -- the only thing I did find myself actually caring about is that this kind of thing simply does not happen over here. And that's really nice

@fosdem 2024 will happen on February 3 & 4th: https://fosdem.org/2024/news/2023-09-02-fosdem-2024-dates/

Calls for devrooms, stands, talks, and lightning talks will open soon(TM).

Of note, we will NOT organize a beer event this time. Amongst other reasons, we will have ULB's premises very late on Friday for buildup and this allows us to concentrate spare resources.

Related: if you are there early/late, or generally able and willing to help, please keep an eye on https://volunteers.fosdem.org/ -- we need more hands.

With all the news about cloud data loss, I do hope that a new wave of users finds out about the distilled awesome that is git-annex.

I have not worried about data loss since starting to use it more than a decade ago.

A friend might has lost their domain name in the Google Workspace disaster.

Are there still any DNS history sleuthing tools which don't charge you $49 or so per lookup? If I had to pay, what would be the best to pay for?

in the scene:

During @fosdem kickoff on 2023-08-26 we built up a tent against the rain. The tent was old and the alumin[i]um poles and steel springs / locking nubs partially rusted away.

I have been walking around with metal shavings in both hands and almost all fingers ever since. It's driving me insane. How can I get them out? They are too small to see, glue, magnets, and pulling cream didn't work.

Halp?

For people coming to by train via Germany, we received the internal message for the rail segment outage via connections: "Signal box fire B44, B45, B53. Traffic interrupted at point 24."

It's fixed already so today should be better.

opening talk from the other side. It's really good to be back in person.

RichiH, (edited )
@RichiH@chaos.social avatar

@fosdem and finally, staff dinner. I've been looking forward to this weekend for weeks, and I am sooooo happy it's finally over.

People will unload the vans tomorrow, sort and count and account and repair and such over the next week or so. We'll do a mix of in-person and remote post mortem in two weeks. And then we don't want to think about FOSDEM until August...

@fosdem debugging... Part of K lost power. We traced it to one circuit breaker, and kept putting it back in while dividing and conquering towards finding the fault.

As @SwiftOnSecurity keeps saying, there's an advantage in being tall. Instead of going up and down the ladder all the time, I simply grabbed a broom and kept pushing the lever up again and again and again until we found it. A power strip had developed a short...

@fosdem It's a bit of a tradition by now.. in 2020, I put into an internal platform that I needed $something plus Gerry in a duck suit and he replied that if anything he'd only wear a moose suit.

Anyway, challenge me on those things at your own risk :)

@fosdem Maybe I'll remember to keep all the talks in in one thread? Let's see :)

2024 opening talk! We had 20-33% first timers!

As per usual, many, many people standing at the back and at the sides. (sorry for the blurry second photo, I hurried too much)

More people, my view to the right. Image is slightly blurred.
