At the advice of my tax accountant I'm watching the elite 8 game between Iowa and LSU. I thought I'd be rooting for Iowa and Caitlin Clark but now I'm remembering how in the late 90s I used to play as LSU in the super nintendo ncaa game so idk, let's go tigers

Ryan,

@shauna
This is an almost NBA pace of scoring. The last tournament game I watched on Saturday, one of the teams had 6 points at the end of the first quarter.

I'm always conflicted by the "there are no white people in the Bible" claim, which I just saw again. I know the point is that white people aren't the special centre of the universe we act like we are, and that is a valuable reminder.

But also, literally there are Romans and Greeks in the Bible. They're usually the oppressive villains.

Ryan,

@CharismaticBatman Sure, and there was a long period of time where Greek and Italian were not considered white. But I don't think the people saying it are trying to point out the modern nature of the construct of race, or if they are, it is a weirdly indirect way to say it. I think they are using modern definitions of "white," for the very good goal of undermining white supremacist assumptions, in which case they are factually wrong.

Ah, so we're doing the "tough on crime" schtick again where we all pretend that the way to stop crimes is to punish people hard enough.

Poilievre vows to crack down on auto theft with harsher sentences, tightened bail conditions | CBC News

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Monday that if his party forms government he will tackle rising car theft across the country by imposing mandatory jail time and tightening bail conditions for repeat offenders.

Ryan,

Obviously this doesn't apply to the rich. The only way to stop the rich from doing crimes is to hire their lobbyists to be key strategists in your government.

Ryan,

Very little crime is done with the kind of forethought that allows for the tough on crime logic to work, like "well, if I get caught I'll go to jail three years now instead of one and that's just not worth it." Most crime is a mix of desperation - which extended jail time makes worse by taking away potential for other jobs and social skills - and opportunity.

Hey customer service, the longer you take to respond to what I thought was a simple confirmation question, the less confident I am that I am going to be happy with the answer.

Ryan,

I contacted a company that does home theatre installs, with a long list of technical details/questions. Their site promised a free quote with knowledgeable staff. Their customer service was impressively fast including on a weekend.

They sent a subcontractor who showed up clearly not having seen the notes, asked some questions about mounting the TV and speakers, left in 15 minutes and charged $100 (which will be rolled into the work if we accept).

I had (still have but don't use) an HP Elite X3 and was really sold on the concept. But it just never got good enough to matter, with only a few apps that supported it.

A truly shameless level of corruption. Why go to an office supply store to renew your government ID, other than the government thought they could save some money and reward one of their donors at the same time?

The Ontario government says it will close a number of ServiceOntario centres and open new locations in select Staples Canada stores.

So, they seriously expect me to work a full week now? How is that even still a thing?

Ryan,

@Stoned_Deva_
January should have a phased return from holidays. First week only work on Wednesday, just enough to check in and kick off some of the brain dust. Second week add Tuesday. Etc.

Ah, I see we're again pretending to be all upset that the Prime Minister took a vacation that was approved by the ethics commissioner.

Is he wealthier than most of us, maybe a little out of touch? Sure, most politicians are, and most of them take vacations.

It still barely registers on my list of concerns. I'm a lot more worried about things like the assumed next Prime Minister refusing to get security clearance while catering to extremists and promising to take away climate action rebates.

I see more and more people on LinkedIn answering that "You’re one of a few experts invited to add to this collaborative article: [insert AI prompt here]" and find it sad for a couple of reasons: first, you’re not one of a few; second, you’re feeding a machine in a gated platform. Write on your #blog instead?

Ryan,

I have yet to answer any of those because I have yet to feel like any of them are interesting questions. All the ones it shows me are way too vague for me to have a useful response.

Ryan, to blackfriday

The Best Buy #BlackFriday sales (that lasted about a month) have now ended and their #BoxingDay sales have begun (so they'll last about a month).

Ryan,

The TV that we will likely buy is the same special sale price that it has already been for a month and probably will be for another month.

I know there are some places still doing the big event doorcrashers but it seems like most have moved in this direction of having two months of modest sales instead. Which I much prefer, as somebody who doesn't like shopping and would rather do it with as few other people as possible.

Aw shit... I definitely have the prednisone zoomies NOW.

Which is fine, only one more day of this, and it's nice to have some upwards energy.

However... in addition to having some chuff to push forward a big project I am exited about and my survival actually depends on, I suddenly have brilliant ideas for like 5 other projects.

Must resist... Must focus.

Is this what feels like? Crikey!

Ryan,

@vlrny
I'm generally happy here, but to your three criteria:

Takes PayPal donations. Also sells merch. No Patreon option as far as I have seen.

Moderation decisions are great as far as I've encountered, but last I heard we were short on actual moderators doing the work.

Pretty good keeping up with volume. I've encountered only brief downtimes.

All the big name Greens were in #KitCen tonight: our MP Mike Morrice, federal leader Elizabeth May, federal deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault, provincial leader and neighbouring #Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner, provincial deputy leader and hopefully soon our MPP Aislinn Clancy.

I resist too closely tying myself to partisan politics, but I really like the way the Greens operate.

Ryan,

The staggering number of the night for me: Mike Morrice said when he won in a very impressive grassroots campaign he had 800 lawn signs up. Aislinn Clancy has 2100 so far, with 11 days to go in a byelection which usually means much lower turnout. #KitCen #OnPoli

Long-time podcast listeners know that I can never figure out vanity plates. There was another one this morning: AHOYM80.

I read it as "ahoy mate-o."

After I said "matey" must have been taken, Pat kindly explained that it was not "eight-oh," but "eighty" ... "matey"! 🤣

Ryan,

@grammargirl
I did the same thing. Parse left to right and M8 sounds like mate.

Funny how different platforms have such different cultures of interaction.
Ask a question on FB, and responders will assume you are sincere and also an idiot and gently suggest you try googling first.
Ask a question on Twix; responders will challenge your right to exist, much less ask a question.
Ask a question here, and within a few hours you get a dozen thoughtful, detailed answers including some that spark fascinating conversations and at least five new friends.

Ryan,

@DrTCombs I've had the similar thought with Bluesky as well. They aren't fully organized harassment campaigns like Twitter, but I still feel like 3/4 of the responses I see are coming in combative and assuming the worst possible interpretation.

Here is very sincere, sometimes too sincere, and almost always assuming the most charitable interpretation of what fit in limited characters. Even the correcting responses are usually "yes, and also this" rather than "you forgot this, you idiot."

We're super glad to have our #heatpump now and thankful for the rebate and loan #Ontario will (probably) give us.

However, you need to:

-Do an energy assessment before the work can be done (we did that in mid-August).

-Have the work done (mid-November)

-Have a second energy assessment (mid-January!)

And then, we'll get the rebate. For the loan, who knows? So it's a big investment for people as we already paid for the first assessment and for the entirety of the work.

There must be a better way.

Ryan,

@mariellequinton @stephanie I have no data; you might be right that a large percentage would have done it anyway. All I can say anecdotally is that we absolutely did a bunch of energy efficiency improvements specifically because of Greener Homes. We debated which had the best ROI. Sure, we would have wanted it (and more we didn't do) anyway, maybe would have eventually gotten to it over several years. But knowing there was a hefty rebate definitely pushed us to do it much faster.
