Inspired by an office water cooler discussion:

Is there something you need to or wish you could tell someone, but haven’t?

What is stopping you?
How could you overcome it?

On this street in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the fall of 2000, I learned that the fine nuances between different kinds of Scotch whiskey … are totally lost on me.

Inside this building is the apparatus needed to control a natural siphon that is capable of directing the flow of water through aqueducts between reservoirs. The dam pictured gives the necessary height to initiate the siphoning action.

View from the conning station inside the armored pilot house of a World War 2-era heavy cruiser. The windows are simply rectangular holes cut through the six-inch thick hardened steel bulkhead. Outside of these cramped quarters is a covered bridge area where the navigation of the ship would normally be carried out. All this thick armor, as in the days of fortresses and castles of old, is cold comfort to the crew who knows their enemy is especially keen on targeting this vital area.

I’m generally not one to call for banning things, but I have just a few little ban requests:

  1. Private jets that belong to people who fly in them to climate conferences
  2. Twelve foot (3.66 m) tall decorative plastic skeletons (previous pleas have fallen upon deaf ears). Can we at least limit it to one per family? Is that too much to ask?
  3. The expansion of inflatable lawn ornaments into additional holidays

I’m struggling today with the fact that the good things in life seem to come and go so quickly while the difficulties seem to just hang around forever.

I know it’s just a problem with perspective, but it’s a hard one to overcome. At least for me, today.

I've been to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It's a tower, and it's leaning. You look at it, but nothing happens, so then you look for someplace to get a sandwich.

It's a nice spring day well west of the metropolis today.

(My phone camera was about 1/4 Inch from the surface of the water & the case got a little wet. Butterfingers, don’t try this at home. 😉)

African Violet # 3

Here's another one, from a bit of a different angle. I used an old 50 mm lens on 39 mm of extension again, and stacked 15 frames, concentrating on the central part of the flower only. For scale, these flowers are about the size of a quarter.

Trying out a simulated vacation Polaroid for something a little different. Uninspired scene, crappy weather, sketchy film, probably stuffed in a pocket and forgotten about. Lemme know if this brings back memories. Or if it looks too fake to bring back memories. 😁

I got out with my camera for the first time in a while yesterday, so fresh material for . This is one of three dams on site made with dry-fitted field stones, and it's been holding the water back for well over 100 years. New England soil is adept at growing rocks, and one of the things we're famous for is the rock walls of similar construction that run for miles through the woods, all that remains of farms long lost to memory.

Something occurred to me the other day that’s a bit painful to admit, but I’ll admit it anyway and maybe you’ll understand why I brand myself as a perpetual social media idiot, I mean, amateur.
As a “professional knowledge worker” (ick, seriously) I have long embraced the practice of Inbox (near) Zero, which means ideally you clarify the meaning of each item that comes into your world and take appropriate action on it, and not leave a bunch of unaddressed “things” lying around that will bite you in the ass later. That’s all well and good and useful for living in this fire hose orgy that is modern life, until you bring that attitude to your social media feed. Then something that’s supposed to be fun turns into another chore. I realized I was subconsciously putting pressure on myself to make sure I had my feed covered while also not expecting anyone to treat my drivel as particularly important. Pretty stupid, ain’t it? 😆

SirNameless_1, to random
@SirNameless_1@vivaldi.net avatar

Today's pointless rant is about car names.

While mowing my front lawn, I caught a glimpse of a small pickup with

“M A V E R I C K”

blazing proudly from the tailgate. No doubt the marketers wished to inspire thoughts of “Mach 2 with your hair on fire” but this one was hauling wicker furniture.

“Bed, Bath, and Beyond, this is M A V E R I C K requesting a fly-by.”
“Negative fly by.”
“Gosh darn it.”
