Snoweider

@Snoweider@mastodon.scot

I'm a Mountain Leader (IML and WML) and wildlife guide. I work mainly in Scotland and the Lake District, as well as overseas. I live on Isle of Arran

I'm also an otter groupie, seabird fan, cyclist, would-be runner and sporadic climber. Sometimes I'm even to be found in a kayak. I live with my husband Wally and two furballs called Nuis 🐕 and Mango 🐱.

I toot about my life, my work, and love to boost stuff about nature, especially the geekier stuff.

Is still a thing here on Masto? Only asking because there's a few accounts I follow that really deserve a plug and don't have many followers... obviously I know it's only Tuesday... 😁

Me: I don't want a new phone it's a total waste of the planet's precious resources.😇
Also me: argh the buttons on this old phone don't work. 😖
Me again: argh my data won't transfer, and I've wasted a day trying to sort it out, why did I get this stupid phone? 🤬
Also me. Ooooh nice macro! 😍

Good morning hunters! How's everyone feeling this morning? To be honest, I'm a little emotionally wrecked. I don't think it's possible to escape unscathed by the experience of the universe reminding you of your place in such a way. Have a good gentle day. 💜💚

Trying to put into words how I feel. The whole improbable miracle of this little rock hurtling through space protected by our tiny bubble of an atmosphere, from the blasting solar winds. And beneath all that sky, there's us, and life, and me and my little dog and the infinite wonder of it all. 🌌

One week, 35 miles and £100 raised. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated in support of Scottish Mountain Rescue. I'm mostly cycling it (not running as I originally intended), but there has been some walking too! https://virtualevent.scottishmountainrescue.org/lucy-wallace/posts/thank-you

Quite pleased to at least be able to totter at a solid 4kmph along forest roads with this boy now! 🥰

Police appeal for information after remains of osprey found at Loch of the Lowes.

This is utterly tragic for everyone who loves these birds and most of all the mate of this bird who is starving herself sitting on eggs waiting for him to return.

Dear Guardian. Who has 150g of rhubarb knocking around while trying to use up the dregs of the fridge (OK me, but I have a plant in the garden), & white miso? Also raw slightly going off cauliflower 🤢? I like a fridge raid meal but you lost me at "going to the market for your weekly shop". Please if you are going to post anti waste food suggestions can you make them helpful, rather than just some sort of snobbish way to make the rest of us feel guilty about being so crap? https://www.theguardian.com/food/2024/may/04/how-to-make-a-fridge-raid-salad-recipe-zero-waste-cooking-tom-hunt

My "sitooterie" kitchen garden. It's looking lush for this time of year and when things start flowering it's going to be bonkers!

Patagonia have made an anti-consumer film called The Shitthropocene. Looking forward to watching it (it's 46 mins long). I find it fascinating that a company that needs profits is challenging the capitalist status quo. They have an impressive environmental record, but their model does rely on people buying new stuff sometimes.*

A bit sad today. Maybe it's the weather which has finally broken. 🌧 Might be that I woke up with nasty cramp in my injured foot/ankle. 😖 Possibly that I've decided not to do No Mow May this year because we have a tick infestation in our lawn. 😭 Quite likely a bunch of other things that I can't put into words. 💔
Please send me your little wins, some climate positivity, or even just pictures of your cat. 🐱
Thank you x.

Getting ready for Arran Mountain Rescue's 60th Anniversary party. I think we have the essential items in place...

Two cans of beer specially made from the Seagate Brewery, Arran. One is called "Goatfell Rescue", the other "Goatfell Murder."

I'm inspired by lovely supportive friends including Becki who sent me this awesome rehab advice in the link (O is for Optimism), and also Kate Worthington of Raw adventures who told me about her strategy for recovering from illness/injury. I'm starting a trend right here. Feel free to join me!

Yesterday's was snuggling on the sofa with Meg and Bo, who are Sharon and @GrahamUney 's lovely labradors. 🧡🧡

Waiting at Claonaig for my ferry home after an action packed week working for on a Summer Mountain Leader Training. Here are a few from our expedition "minibreak" out west on some fantastic rocky wee peaks below the snowline. Bonus- we saw a WHITE TAILED EAGLE!

Day two of course was about leadership and we were treated to a stunning day! It may be full winter up high but in the glens today it was very much spring, with glorious sunshine and views forever. This was a very lovely outdoor classroom!

Key Learning points included "the position of most usefulness", route choice, how powerful our voice and even non verbal communication can be, having a plan B plus being adaptable to the situation.

Stopped off at Loch Coille-Bharr, famous for its beavers. The rodents are nocturnal, but their presence is felt.
Also some nice fungi and lichens. I'm going to double check my IDs later but if anyone wants to drop IDs into the replies feel free!

Large foliose lichen on the trunk of a tree.
Huge bracket fungus on a birch trunk.
A view of Loch Choille-Bharre, seen through trees. The water and the sky are blue.

Feeling pumped after a good 20km today. Plan A was to head over the saddle from Sannox but I had a sensible word with myself this morning about the forecast, and came up with a better plan- with a bus to Corrie and a tootle through the woods into Glen Rosa and then via Brodick and some more woods to home. It was lovely weather for waterfalls with heavy showers, hail and a strong headwind at times. My legs are gubbed, and I'm ravenous!
