Snoweider

@Snoweider@mastodon.scot

I'm a Mountain Leader (IML and WML) and wildlife guide. I work mainly in Scotland and the Lake District, as well as overseas. I live on Isle of Arran

I'm also an otter groupie, seabird fan, cyclist, would-be runner and sporadic climber. Sometimes I'm even to be found in a kayak. I live with my husband Wally and two furballs called Nuis 🐕 and Mango 🐱.

I toot about my life, my work, and love to boost stuff about nature, especially the geekier stuff.

Happy to all! 🏔

It's a good day to celebrate the powerful draw that mountains have on us. 😍 Arran's small but perfectly formed mountains are particularly special, but maybe I'm biased? 🤔

Around the world, mountains, together with the oceans, dominate our weather, climate and water supply. Mountain peoples are some of the most resourceful and hospitable folk on earth and in many places, mountains are held to be sacred. ❤️

Wahoo! Golden eagles, otters, peat bogs, archaeology, caves, geology.... what a fabby day in the office! The walk around the Cock of Arran always delivers but today was epic. Two happy leaders and 11 inquisitive and energetic young people... Everyone will eat and sleep well tonight. .

Jasmin Paris is someone who throughout her career, has redefined what it means to be a woman in sport.

In my lifetime I've seen endurance sportswomen smash barriers and really open people up to the possibilities of women's sport.

These wins like this mean something huge, they change the world for the rest of us in small, but irreversible ways. I'd love to thank her for this. 🙏

Waiting at Claonaig for my ferry home after an action packed week working for on a Summer Mountain Leader Training. Here are a few from our expedition "minibreak" out west on some fantastic rocky wee peaks below the snowline. Bonus- we saw a WHITE TAILED EAGLE!
Being an ML is the best job in the world. More info here: https://www.abacusmountainguides.com/mountain-leader-courses.html

Getting ready for Arran Mountain Rescue's 60th Anniversary party. I think we have the essential items in place...

Two cans of beer specially made from the Seagate Brewery, Arran. One is called "Goatfell Rescue", the other "Goatfell Murder."

A few from my day working on Arran's North Coast with Helen today. We got super lucky with the weather, dodged showers that were going off around us with rainbows everywhere, and enjoyed some of the history of this amazing coastline. The tall ship graffiti in the second pic is from Ossians Cave and is over 200 years old. 🌈🔱

@Snoweider@mastodon.scot avatar

I'm running again after a long layoff and some injury prone years, so being super careful this time with building mileage slowly and only running on trails (no tarmac). It seems to be working because today was my longest run yet. Nothing special "just" 10km, but it means a lot. The best bit is that I got paid while I was doing it as was checking DofE groups out on the trail. 😄

⚠️Avalanche awareness!

https://www.sais.gov.uk/

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service has forecasted a "considerable" hazard for the forecast areas today, but what does this mean for hill walkers? And what about other mountain areas where forecasts are not provided (inc. Arran)? 🏔

Avalanche avoidance is an essential skill for winter hill walkers and a core part of our winter skills courses. We've still got spaces on our course in Glencoe from the 9th-11th February.

A view up to Goatfell summit from the main tourist path. Slopes laden with snow especially under the buttresses in Coire Lan.

Today I ran to this falling down cottage, known locally as the Owl House. It's kind of spooky, but someone cares about it and has restored the name plaque above the door. Inside, the floor is crunchy with the discarded bones of small mammals eaten by generations of owls 🦉. Outside are the tracks of red deer. 🦌

Stopped off at Loch Coille-Bharr, famous for its beavers. The rodents are nocturnal, but their presence is felt.
Also some nice fungi and lichens. I'm going to double check my IDs later but if anyone wants to drop IDs into the replies feel free!

Large foliose lichen on the trunk of a tree.
Huge bracket fungus on a birch trunk.
A view of Loch Choille-Bharre, seen through trees. The water and the sky are blue.

Cyclists in Glasgow- have you contributed to the Waiting To Happen survey yet? It is gathering data on near misses at three very sketchy junctions along the river where cyclists are vulnerable and there has been one fatality. The survey closes on the 6th October so there's one week left to contribute.

I've just been reading about the sad history behind this survey here :https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/oct/01/glasgow-architects-road-changes-colleague-cycling-death

If Carlsberg did night exercises... 😍
Last night Arran Mountain Rescue Team training was a night exercise on the slopes of Beinn Nuis. 🏔These are always epic, but last night was special with fresh snow lying deep on the hill and calm if chilly weather.❄️❄️❄️ We carried out a line search for a missing person, who we treated for hypothermia & a lower leg injury, then headed high on to the mountain to retrieve two crag fast walkers. Thankfully, no real casualties were harmed in these scenarios!

The message here is that the great unwashed are the source of any harm that comes to our countryside, and that farmers are blameless custodians of the land. 🤔

One week, 35 miles and £100 raised. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated in support of Scottish Mountain Rescue. I'm mostly cycling it (not running as I originally intended), but there has been some walking too! https://virtualevent.scottishmountainrescue.org/lucy-wallace/posts/thank-you

Trying to put into words how I feel. The whole improbable miracle of this little rock hurtling through space protected by our tiny bubble of an atmosphere, from the blasting solar winds. And beneath all that sky, there's us, and life, and me and my little dog and the infinite wonder of it all. 🌌
