    Our last mass shooting was in 1996, but not in a school. The federal government tightened up gun ownership in response. Police didn’t even regularly carry guns in my state until the 1980s. I still cringe when I see one. I’ve never touched a handgun.

    So the gun culture in the US is a mystery to me. Farmers have guns here, to shoot rabbits & foxes etc, & there are keen hunters, but the average person who doesn’t live on the land never handles & rarely sees a gun.

    If it was possible to live forever, would you want to?

    Susan60,
    @Susan60@aus.social avatar

    @RickiTarr

    No way. I’m not in any hurry to shuffle off, & hope for another 20-30 years, as long as my health holds out. But the idea of continuing to physically decline, & maybe cognitively, & take up space & resources long after they can be justified by a reasonable quality of life, does not appeal at all.

    If you could pause body aging, what age would you have paused at, and why?

    Susan60,
    @Susan60@aus.social avatar

    @HelenWheels @RickiTarr

    I could do that up until about the age 40, and was able to lose weight pretty easily. In my 60s and things have changed, although I haven't ballooned too badly. It would be nice still be like that.

    This house has old school lines, with none of the things that made older homes comfortable. There’s no eaves or verandahs, meaning that walls & windows cop the brunt of weather conditions thrown at them. That big upstairs window at the front will welcome the morning sun on a hot summer’s day, but the north facing windows on the side which will collect the light & heat of the winter sun, are only small. Why are we not requiring smarter home design?

    Hey folks. Don't forget to provide alt text so that the vision impaired, who often used screen readers, don't miss out entirely when you post a picture, video or a meme. Lots of these folk have partial sight, so some description can be really helpful. I follow @PleaseCaption which will even write the text for me if I want. It does a pretty good job, but I always check, partly because I'm not a huge fan of AI but also because it sometimes makes mistakes or the emphasis is wrong. Super easy to do and makes the fediverse more inclusive.

    So I’m curious. When people write up a profile for the fediverse, & don’t include the country where they live, what is their reason? Is it because they don’t think it matters or is of interest to others? Is it because they assume that everyone lives in the same country as them or shares their geopolitical viewpoint?

    When was your first kiss {french kiss}? Age/sex/location/story

    I was 14, it was with a boy, Melrose Park ... It was our first date, we grabbed some Chinese and drove down to the water ... A boat ramp ... We sat next to each other on the bonnet, I think it was a Ford, built like a tank ... Jesse took all the rubbish to the bin ... I was still sitting on the bonnet, he stood in front of me, he had his hands on my thighs ... And we chatted like this for a while ... He said let's go and pulled me off the bonnet ... My eyes were glued to his ... Just as I was on the ground ... We kissed ... And I melted, my legs nearly failed me ... Giggles ... Or was like fireworks

    I had a customer in today, he is into international affairs for work ... We chatted about all the shit that's happening around the world ... He asked me what I thought was going to happen ... "World war 3 and the biggest genocide that has ever been seen" ... His reply was, "isn't that happening now" ... Something to think about ... As he was leaving he said "don't be surprised one day we wake up and the middle east has exploded" ... It's not a matter of if, its a matter of when

    Why is it that the wrong that I have done to others, is like a stain in my memory?

    Yet the good that I have done, remains distant?

    I wish I could recall the smiles as vividly as I can the anger.

    Susan60,
    @Susan60@aus.social avatar

    @Mrfunkedude

    I think that negative experiences often have a stronger impact on us, plus we tend to ruminate over them more, making them more likely to stick in our memories. We probably need to counter that by recording pleasant events & looking back over them on a regular basis, especially times when we know we’ve done something good, whether or not it was appreciated.

    I've had some lovely if rare random conversations with people in shops etc, some when I was working in retail. But sometimes it turns out that while we have similar interests, we have very different opinions. Was having a lovely random chat with a woman after one of our many Melbourne lockdowns, and we said something about how the then prime minister Morrison was managing things. At the exact same time she said something like, "I think he's a good man at heart", while I said, "I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him", and we both stood there stunned, looking at each other. Quite a hoot really!

    Is there any validated difference in stimming behaviour between autism and ADHD?

    Often one is considdered fidgeting the other stimming. But I don't know whether it is based on anything other than the known diagnosis.

    Eg. i noticed my ADHD sister in law rockimg recently. And she told me she does that sometimes. I most oftenly see rocking associated to autism, but I really don't know if there is any solid differenciation at all.

    Susan60,
    @Susan60@aus.social avatar

    @Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd

    I think that discovering ADHD is like a soft introduction to autism, & that medication, if used to moderate ADHD, often exposes autism. That’s kind of how it worked for me, & is probably a gentler introduction to conscious neurodivergence than a full on AuADHD diagnosis

    Teachers aren’t allowed to write such subjective comments nowadays. It’s good in one way, because so often the behaviours that were valued were gender based &/or about passive compliance, but knowing that you were well liked must’ve been nice.

    So, yes i was chatting with someone that I liked ... I asked how they support themselves and I got a thousand line response to that, all about child hood trauma ... And living on the trauma to survive, blamed their mother and father for all their problems ....ok if some one was under 20 I can understand ,but in the early 40's ... I said "you know there is a time in one's life that one needs to put your big person panties on"

    In the morning I received a message "you said you wanted to chat today"

    So I sent, below ... Was I too harsh, and their response at the bottom

    Only if you want, I will say, I really didn't like you shutting down the chat like you did ... I found it very disrespectful ... I understand you may not have known that about me ... I have said communication is very important in any relationship I have ... And in saying that, I don't have a problem if the other person wants to stop chatting, wants to change the topic or wants some alone time ... Communicate that don't slam the door

    And on what I said "pull your ...." I'm not sorry for saying that at all ... We have all had problems throughout childhood, and adult hood and it's not a "pissing competition" ... Maybe one-day I will tell you some things about my childhood.

    But one thing I need in my life is someone that can stand up and take charge of their own life ... Why, because that's what I do every day ... I wake up and get on with it ... I crave that in a partner

    I also need to have a partner that understands, I need to flirt and not get jealous ... I didn't like the what you questioned me about a couple of the people I am chatting with ... and we aren't in a partner ship ... I have said I would like to meet you, as at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how well we get along online, if how we are once we meet

    Hugz & xXx

    And this was their reply

    > I'm not sorry for saying that at all

    i understand. my feelings do not matter to you.

    thats all i need to know. take care.

    Wherever they are on their journey, it’s not the same place as you, & they might not be heading in a similar direction either.

    If they’re not currently in a space where they’re able to put on their big girl panties, that’s ok, but it also means that they’re not ready for a relationship.
