@zenforyen @actuallyautistic my special interests change, often in relation to my current life circumstances. They might last a few years, or much less time.

    @peterdutoit This is terrifying. Parts of Australia have had milder winters than normal, but the idea of winter being as hot as our hottest summers?

    @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 Given that many people only wave the swab in their nose hairs, it’s hardly surprising.

    The sympathetic nervous system produces our fight-or-flight response to any perceived threat.

    The vagus nerves are part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which does the opposite, @DrTheresaLarkin (@UOW) writes. https://theconversation.com/our-vagus-nerves-help-us-rest-digest-and-restore-can-you-really-reset-them-to-feel-better-210469?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1692838461-1

    Stacy has been quite introspective today. Stacy needs to get out in the fresh air with Mark, have a beer, play horseshoes, and lighten up a bit to wrap up the day.
    Stacy is also referring to herself too much in the third person lately. This must stop. Jimmy from Seinfeld should not be my role model.

    It happened. I’ve been predicting this for years. A shop owner in Southern California was shot and killed because she had a Pride flag at her store. Media outlets, who have downplayed local fascist attacks on LGBTQ+ existence, won’t call this a terrorist attack or hate crime. https://www.vpsreports.com/post/shop-owner-in-southern-california-fatally-shot-over-pride-flag

    @VPS_Reports To me, reading in Melbourne Australia, this is utterly incomprehensible - possessing a gun, using a gun to kill someone, targeting an LGTBIQ ally.

    @Misty_M @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 Like anyone thinks they’d bother trying to contain it? It’s probably not possible anyway, short of closing the borders before it’s arrival, if it’s not already here. Victoria might or might not have crushed Delta before Gladys let it loose, but everything since has been increasingly infectious.

    @pathfinder @actuallyautistic Is this why autistic kids often prefer the company of adults, in the hopeful belief that they’ll be safe with them? Even as an adult, I have been more likely to seek relationships with authority figures - teachers, lecturers, leaders etc.

    Susan60,
    @Susan60@aus.social avatar

    @Sci_Fi_FanGirl @pathfinder @actuallyautistic I think I was both. I had a lot of respect for smart & knowledgeable adults, which carried on into adulthood. I later learned that smart people weren’t necessarily trustworthy.

    There are people who can speak before coffee. I am not one of them.
    I told Mark this, and he proceeded to rattle off the entire Eagle's schedule as I waited for my coffee,. He did this with stats and opinions in order to 'point out' how his Giants will wipe the floor with my Eagles this year -all before I had a single sip of coffee and didn't have the wherewithal to argue back.
    Damn him. 😠 😆 😠 😆

    Cloaker, to nuclear
    @Cloaker@aus.social avatar

    CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator’s GenCost report into the cost of electricity generation based on technology type found that an energy grid running on 90 per cent renewables, including transmission lines and back-up battery or gas power, would cost between $70 to $100 a megawatt hour in 2030.

    Small modular reactors would cost between $200 and $350 a megawatt hour, were that technology available by 2030.

    I think that says it all re: in Australia. I don't mind the idea of nuclear and think it can be done responsibly and safely, but it's likely best to leave it to those who've already done it and have strong energy sharing links, so Europe.

    https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/yes-in-my-backyard-nationals-happy-to-go-nuclear-20230809-p5dv43.html?btis

    Susan60,
    @Susan60@aus.social avatar

    @Cloaker I think there is so much more to be done on renewables. Solar farms that can run sheep which benefit from shade is an interesting one.
