I really don't get it. I'm on a plane stuck on the ground due to an air traffic control hold. It's a sealed tube with a hundred people sharing air, no filtration (only available in the air), and dozens are coughing, sniffing and sneezing. My wife and i are the only ones masked. How much denial must one feel to risk getting sick with or anything else in these conditions? Seriously, how hard is to while sitting quietly in at airline seat on a packed plane?

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@augieray Argh!

It doesn't bother me one bit that my wife and I seem to be the only people masked in the airport. I mean, I wish people were being more careful, but I have no problem being the "odd one." Masks aren't a guarantee, but I'd like to be the one feeling healthy and not putting others at risk on the plane, at my destination, and at home.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@augieray Sometimes it doesn’t bother me at all, but occasionally I feel self conscious. A talk to my oldest who has long Covid usually fixes that. 😢

I don't get reality TV or how it still exists.

I don't understand how people can "escape" in to other peoples drama? What is so attractive about seeing a bunch of rich asshats yelling at each other?

Am I just too empathetic? (no shade on those who enjoy the genre.)

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude It all seems to be designed to bring out the worst in people. Well, most it. I don’t need to see that.

Blast from the past: bus drivers and seniors in Singapore coo-ing over a well known community cat in front of a food centre.

Community cats are like feral cats in the US, except that self-organizing groups of individuals take responsibility for sterilizing, feeding, and ensuring the well-being of a community cat. That way, if you love cats but you can't have one, you can still pet many of them. Check out https://www.catsofsg.com

Susan60,

@krazykitty @skinnylatte Some towns in Greece also do this with cats.

Conservative parents are like "Yes my child is totally straight, I just need to shield their sensitive eyes from any books and/or rainbows because I know for a fact that will immediately turn them gay. The kid is straight as an arrow though."

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@lowqualityfacts For goodness sake don’t expose them to anything that might explain strange longings or gender dysphoria. Just present them with limited ways to be human.

For Month, I'd like to mention . The show ran from 1993 to 1998, and made a point of not making a point of gay relationships. Susan Ivanova (serving military officer) had a lesbian affair with Talia Winters, and no other character even blinked.

Later on two straight men on a secret mission found themselves using "newlyweds" as a cover story, because two men on their honeymoon would fit right in.

The message was clear: in the future being gay is 100% unremarkable. In the 90s!

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@tokensane And in fantasy/sci-fi genres, it’s very often unremarkable.

Random thoughts from an anesthesiologist: if you want to age gracefully, then moisturize your hands and apply sunscreen on your face and neck. Nothing shows your age more than your hands and neck. 1/x

Philadelphia schools are considering year-round schools for the kids. Do you agree with this?

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@dancinyogi I’m in Australia & am a former school teacher. We have a 6 week summer/Christmas break & 3x2 term breaks. Students & staff are usually tired-burnt out by the end of each term, & especially end of school year. Year round school might even out the stresses, but might worsen mental health issues. And take away the holidays & a lot of teachers might resign. (For some, the holidays only just offset the downsides.) School isn’t childcare. If childcare is the issue, provide childcare options.

💔Sorry , but Mastodon has stolen my heart.

No more regrets, no more noise, and goodbye to sponsored tweets, click baits, and Elon Musk's shenanigans!
It's only been 7 months, but has become my happy place.

Do you feel the same, or do you still crave a Twitter fix now and then?

@david_senate I miss some of my old faves from the disabled, Indigenous & Medical communities. A few have come over, but not many.

“The number of people under 50 with cancer is increasing in many countries and for many different tumour types.” Could it be due to
infections perhaps having an oncogenic impact? Nope, it “may be due to some aspects of modern life.”

To have something that was custom measured and designed for my body makes a huge difference… this has been nearly a year in the making! ♿️

  1. easier to push, so less fatigue and more mobility
  2. feels like an extension of my body.
  3. builds confidence in my wheelchair skills.

Crucial observation from Rachel Cohen over at the new place - and it points to a larger problem: In the mainstream political discourse, especially in mainstream media coverage, terms like “moderate” and “extreme” have absolutely no substantive definition, which makes it easy for conservatives to constantly drag their meaning rightward.

@Zumbador @fishidwardrobe @theautisticcoach @Uniflame @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics Wow. I’ve just been diagnosed as mildly ADHD & strongly suspect that I’m autistic, at 62. All to often people define themselves by what they are not. I wasn’t ADHD until I learned enough about it to realise that I might be & sought help. I wasn’t autistic because my understanding of autism was so limited & outdated. I suspect a lot of binary thinking is like this. Ignorance blocks out any hint of nuance & shades of grey.

The other day my partner helped an elderly man onto a tram. (Just about picked him up!), & when we all got off at the same stop, we crossed the road with him, very slowly. Later on, on another tram, we had a very entertaining conversation with a very strange, older, possibly homeless man. Engaging with people when out & about, rather than burying ourselves in our phones or isolating ourselves in cars can be very rewarding. One day we too might need assistance & company.

Saying to a friend the other day, that no matter the time of year (eg season, temperature etc) there’s always so much the garden can, and does offer.

Nature always provides.

Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm.

Not the case.

It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people.

Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important because it's not connected to gaming any algorithm.

By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it.

So go ahead. Click that like button for its own sake.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@atomicpoet I don’t want to boost everything that makes me smile or think or whatever. I don’t want my followers to be bombarded by me over sharing. But liking let’s people know that I value what they’ve said or shared.
