Interesting to see that this latest variant is being reported as not concerning for anyone who is vaccinated, with no mention of Long Covid. I overheard a woman pushing a stroller the other day, telling someone on her phone about the brain fog that she can’t shake off.

Cloaker, to nuclear
@Cloaker@aus.social avatar

CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator’s GenCost report into the cost of electricity generation based on technology type found that an energy grid running on 90 per cent renewables, including transmission lines and back-up battery or gas power, would cost between $70 to $100 a megawatt hour in 2030.

Small modular reactors would cost between $200 and $350 a megawatt hour, were that technology available by 2030.

I think that says it all re: in Australia. I don't mind the idea of nuclear and think it can be done responsibly and safely, but it's likely best to leave it to those who've already done it and have strong energy sharing links, so Europe.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@Cloaker We can’t even find a place for nuclear waste from Lucas Heights, small amounts associated with nuclear medicine.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@Cloaker I think the issues of nuclear are just too risky. The potential for reactors to become targets in the event of a dirty war is high. Climate change is going to place a lot of stress on economies & food security which will threaten stable governments & exacerbate issues where governance is already unstable. This will greatly increase the risk of international conflict, if only to distract citizens from problems at home. (Think the Falklands War under Thatcher.) Russia is a good example of this. Introducing enormously expensive high risk military targets onto the scene can’t be a good idea.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@Cloaker I think there is so much more to be done on renewables. Solar farms that can run sheep which benefit from shade is an interesting one.

Today we spent some time looking at the amazing area around Lake Pedder in Tasmania's Southwest National Park. Lake Pedder was created as we know it today in 1972 so as to develop Hydro Electric Power and there is still a push today to drain it back to its original size for ecological reasons.

I don't know enough about this, but it is certainly something I would like to follow up researching.

In the meantime, here's my favourite picture from today.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@chestas It’s an interesting story. Whilst the protests at the time failed, they set the scene for successful protests against the Franklin dam years later.

My new hobby is being unnecessarily dramatic about tiny things in an attempt to salt the earth for future teenage antics along similar lines.

Me: Oh no! We are out of my crackers! Woe is me!

10yo: It's just a cracker. I think you can manage.

Me: Oh fruit of my loins, I gave you life and this is how you treat me? I shelter you and feed you and you dismiss my cares and worries so harshly? YOU DON'T LOVE ME

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@AndyPerfors I think being a drama queen occasionally is both good fun & a way to discourage actual overly dramatic performances.

Air travel emissions are proving difficult and costly to cut, and some solutions might make air travel prohibitively expensive

However, write experts from @Sydney_Uni, travellers can make a big difference by changing how they travel to + from the airport. https://theconversation.com/how-air-travellers-can-cut-their-door-to-door-emissions-right-now-by-as-much-as-13-on-the-sydney-melbourne-route-211099?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1691444314-1

Climate communications thread...

Yesterday I had an encounter in the field with a rare, but pernicious and hazardous species, the climatus denialus ignoramus.
My wife and I were in a bar having a relaxing after dinner drink when "Brad" and his wife started chatting me up. At first it was just sports. Then out of the blue, without knowing who he was talking to, he asked me "what fraction of the atmosphere is CO2". When I instantly responded with the exact answer, he was temporarily...

@petergleick I simply can’t deal with such denialist ignorance. Presumably it’s a defence mechanism to justify not taking any responsibility for action on climate.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@chestas I have avoided travelling to areas of high risk on hot days since Black Saturday. I still remember being on yard duty on the Monday on a smoky school oval. (We shouldn’t have been outside. Terrible air quality.) I hope everyone in areas of risk has an effective plan & knows how to implement it. Stay safe.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@chestas Even Tassie has experienced hot summers & bushfires. Reading that tourists were flown onto Rhodes & sent straight to emergency areas made my blood boil. Travellers can be incredibly ignorant & stupid but the companies involved should be hit with massive fines.

@melissabeartrix @Caiotekit Not sure. Barbie was a gift from someone. Neither my oldest nor I were ever into playing with dolls. I was into acting out my own adventures & my oldest wrote stories (& still does.) I think the abseiling was a protest.

The current phenomenon is so “unprecedented”, so different from the normal, natural cycles, that it’s been difficult to predict. I’m guessing we passed the tipping point years ago.

I think I’m experiencing a third wave of realizations (post autism diagnosis). First wave was panic/internalized ableism. 2nd was recognizing the ways I’ve been different my whole life. This 3rd wave seems to be grief over how much time and energy I’ve wasted worrying about seeming normal. So many opportunities lost while keeping up appearances. I’m happy with my life now, but holy shit, what could have been. @actuallyautistic
