A story in four parts…

liquor_american, to apple

Any enthusiasts out there? I'm not really an Apple guy, but I just found a MacBook Pro 15 in a dumpster and have determined it's the early 2008 model. I went ahead and ordered a cheapo power cord for it, and now I'm trying to determine exactly what a person can realistically do with 15 year old Apple tech. I definitely don't want it to wind up in landfill, anyway !

TheJBW,
@TheJBW@bitbang.social avatar

@liquor_american that’s after the Intel transition, so, I mean, pretty much anything you could do with a pc laptop from the era, including run windows. Maybe use it as an emulation machine or to play some early 2000s games.

For anyone having trouble getting ADTPro (2.1.0) to work on an M1 / Apple Silicon Mac...

I had to do these things:

  1. Install JDK per this: https://adtpro.com/install.html
  2. Launch by double clicking 'ADTPro.command' in the folder
  3. To resolve the 'Can't find serial ports / rxtx library issue, update jssc-2.9.2.jar to jssc-2.9.4.jar per this post: https://github.com/ADTPro/adtpro/issues/142#issuecomment-1648770857

It’s well known that ADB uses the same connector as S-Video. It’s also widely stated that an S-Video cable can substitute for an ADB cable, and I have done so in the past. When unboxing my old IIGS recently, I tried to do that with a cable off Amazon, and my KB didn’t work. Long story short, cheap S-Video cables these days short pins 1-2 to save money on wire, since they’re both ground. This prevents their use for ADB. As a result, this is my jank solution while I wait for a legit cable…

Many years ago, I worked with a guy who took old ICs and stuck googly eyes and antennae on. Usually he’d surprise people with them, but we were friends so I got the best one. Still have it on my fridge 10+ years later.

I’m sure it’ll cheese some folks off to see a 486DX 25MHz condemned to this fate though. No idea if it worked when “retired” but many legs are bent to hold the pipe cleaner antennae in place, so it would be a risky procedure to restore at best and I have no application for it.

📓✒️ If you had purchased Corel Ventura 5 for desktop publishing in 1995, you would have received a booklet to help you browse through the 17,000 included cliparts. 😁 Did you use clipart for your documents and presentations? What about WordArt? 😆

TheJBW,
@TheJBW@bitbang.social avatar

@muzej I love these clipart collections. They have an energy all their own. I kicked up one of the Corel XX,000 packs a while back and will occasionally just dick around and make art on my Win3.11 machine

Rebuilt my 2006 era MAME cabinet. Only kept the buttons and the CRT.

Using a raspberry pi 4 and HDMI to VGA adapter, I kept getting random intermittent loss of synch (blanking) from the display, no matter the settings. Even with multiple different adapters.

I found exactly ONE post suggesting cutting pin 12 (monitor ID data) on the VGA cable. Using a 1’ extension so I didn’t maul the monitor cable, I tried it out and the problem went away.

Thought I’d share, in case it helps someone else.

Got a haul of retro gear back that I’d been storing with family for a decade. Gonna post these one by one as I test them. First thing is the big one: an original asteroids machine modded with Braze Technologies multi game kit ( https://www.brasington.org/arcade/products/adl/ )

I love the ultra bright dot from the slow scan on the vector CRT when you fire bullets. No emulated experience I’ve seen has reproduced that effect.

Sometimes I remember that as a child, my family got our 486 as a build from a tiny storefront run by Korean immigrants. They named their brand “Comluk” and pronounced it “Cum-luck” — a few years later they rebranded to something like “Lucky Computer”

I'm unloading stuff stored with Family in the Las Vegas NV, USA area.

I've got a bunch of old Nintendo Power / PC Gamer magazines, a few old big boxes for PC games (no disks, just boxes) and a copy of word perfect 5.1.

https://imgur.com/a/XRUnPQo

If anyone wants them, they're free. I can meet you in a public place and hand them off.

If not, they'll probably find their way to goodwill. I just don't have the space to keep them.

@idle_automaton the “I don’t like change” crowd always finds long winded ways to soil their diapers no matter how minor a change is.

I’ll be a little nostalgic for them, but the earth needs it and my wallet does too. History will not regret the passing of the incandescent now that LEDs with good color gamuts exist. And nobody will fucking miss CFLs.

Checked out a local retro game store yesterday and bought a few things. Picked up this brand new sealed gameboy cleaning kit. Gotta love those graphics!

Is there a direct upgrade path from Windows 98 to Windows XP or do I have to go to Windows 2000 first?

TheJBW,
@TheJBW@bitbang.social avatar

@felsqualle I thought you could just run the XP upgrade from within Win98. 2k isn’t really a direct predecessor from XP marketing wise (even if technologically it very much is). Most consumers went from 98 or ME to XP afaik.

Anyone encountered an N64 that resets intermittently? My early model (spring '97) resets - sometimes within minutes of powering on, others, hours with no issues.

Sometimes it's even a reset loop. Definitely makes games unplayable at this point.

I've tried deoxit. I've tried reseating the jumper pak (no memory expansion present). I've recapped the mainboard. No joy on any of these, and same behavior across multiple games.

My next shot is to recap the power supply, but I'm open to ideas.

TheJBW,
@TheJBW@bitbang.social avatar

@lepidotos Thanks! I guess the next step is a round of deoxit there, followed by a recap.

TheJBW,
@TheJBW@bitbang.social avatar

@lepidotos Just realized I never followed up on this -- ended up going the lazy route and just bought a third party replacement PSU. Sure enough, that seems to have cleared it up 100%. Thanks for the recommendation!

@grantonthenet don't do it. Self harm is never the right choice! 😆

TheJBW,

@grantonthenet Firefox sync doesn't even work for me anymore either. I just get an error on the login page. 😠

Still, been a firefox loyalist since 2004.

TIL that Wayland is a thing though.

TheJBW,
@TheJBW@bitbang.social avatar

@grantonthenet Ah. My limited Linux use is via SSH these days, and my GUI is usually MacOS or Windows, so I don't track these things. Interesting though. I'll have to research why they are doing this.
