Today's writing task: first-draft a scene with a plausibly silly supervillain attack in the centre of Birmingham for Bob to get caught up in, complicated by the presence of Youtube influencers (it's 2015) and folks who are still in denial about the New Management (because magic isn't real). It's 10:30 and I am already getting a headache thinking about this scene ...

If I could work out, in the blink of a eye, that was going to be a massive petrie dish for , why couldn't those supposedly qualified to run the ? It's time we stopped allowing unqualified , especially . Everyone else jumps through qualification & experience hoops to do the most basic of jobs BUT the country is led by utter incompetents. We'd be sacked if we didn't do a good . just get another job they aren't qualified for.

Do you have a resume gap because you were Seriously Goddam Sick? I was out of work for five years due to illness and this is what I ended up telling employers after a little trial and error: "I was providing care for a sick relative."

Reader, it was me. I was my sick relative and I was taking care of myself. If you're back to working capacity it's none of their business

    Meet Cecilia.

    Turned up desperately ill, dehydrated and starving on our doorstep a while ago.

    Now recovering well from major surgery to remove a huge polyp (hence the still slightly closed eye), thanks to Cats Protection's help.

    We've agreed she can move in permanently. 🐈

    She and Napoleon will be introduced slowly. Both are pretty un-territorial, they'll adjust to each other.

    No way we were going to leave her without a perma-home, after she'd already been abandoned once as a kitten.

    I have an issue with a shared mailbox in outlook.
    I try to rename the .ost file.

    File cannot be saved because it's open in MS Excel.

    Gah. Close excel.

    File cannot be saved because it's open in MS Word.

    Gaaaah. Close Word.

    File cannot be saved because it's open in MS PowerPoint.

    When did I even...? Gah, Close Close Close alllll!

    Why is the whole of MS Office using my mail cache?

    REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

    Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

    Ministers warn English councils not to adopt four-day working weeks

    The council has said its continuing trial of the practice, in which office staff and bin collectors are paid the same for working 20% fewer hours, has already helped it improve recruitment and led to over £500,000 in savings on agency workers.

    The cruelty as always, appears to be the point, since evidence shows it saves money.

    21: If you were in a zombie apocalypse, which of your MCs would you want with you and why?

    Bob Howard, no question—he has experience when it comes to dealing with zombie apocalypses. Admittedly more along the lines of starting them than suppressing them, but anyone whose job title is "Eater of Souls" is probably useful in situations involving the undead, right?
