Because of the current issue with Bing that affects DuckDuckGo and Qwant, I did a "research" (5 min look into https://alternativeto.net/software/google-search/?license=opensource ) and found Searx and Searxng. I'm giving a try to Searxng, so far so good finding issues with Ubuntu 24.04 and Wayland. But I keep thinking that there should be a federated way to search the Internet

adelgado,
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

Looking at the preferences of Searxng you can see the other search engines and sites it tracks to find your query (from Bing to Google or Yahoo). I keep thinking... federated OpenSearch? like https://opensearch.org/ an ElasticSearch fork

adelgado,
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

@researchbuzz the main issue I see right now is the storage needed for this. Storage is not super cheap, specially fast storage because people want instant results (maybe those loading big search result pages loaded with ads wouldn't notice). This is probably the reason all of those "search engines" failing today and even Searxng don't have their own datasets and instead rely on Microsoft (Bing) and Alphabet (Google), so if companies with prospects of making money are not doing it might be hard

adelgado,
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

@researchbuzz But the federated option might be the key, smaller datasets? based on common places and then after the first result page ask other federated sites?

@researchbuzz uBlock Origin is spoiling me :D

@LEA86 "Illicit material" in Internet is complex because there are many different countries and laws. I would like to have a technological tool that I can control, and then I should follow the laws that affect me

adelgado,
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

@researchbuzz Maybe @mozilla could use the user history to keep such a dataset locally and then access other public instances for 2nd page results... but maybe Mozilla relies a lot on start page money from search engines

The south of Spain is suffering a long drought that is causing several towns in the south coast to restrict the showers in beaches and homes supply. Some of the reservoirs are under 15% https://www.rtve.es/noticias/20230626/sequia-ultima-hora/2438756.shtml

I'm having a hell of a day with Firefox today (and part of yesterday). Since 126.0 was released many websites make Firefox crash (for example opening images here in Mastodon but also a Grafana dashboard and others). All in Gnome with Wayland and Ubuntu 24.04. Are other people having the same issues?

New EU agreement between some countries for remote work grant employees the benefits of the country they work for. This could mean an increase in gentrification of the south of Spain like Málaga where Finnish people will be able to afford higher prices for housing or food, causing the locals with local benefits to leave the area.

The appointed Secretary of State for the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Kari Ilkkala, seems to not be able to pass a security clearance by SUPO (the Finnish Security Intelligence Service). Ilkkala violated official secrecy and have considerable debts.

I just updated, improved and translated my script to set the wallpaper to a current image of Earth centred in a city with the actual light and shadow on it and some info. Using info from @wikipedia .ch and @openmeteo https://gitlab.com/antoniodelgado/earth_wallpaper/

@thunderbird has an issue with support. I've been having an issue with Calendar events since always. Now testing the beta, keep having the same issue of not been able to dismiss calendar events in a caldav. So I decide to be proactive and fill a bug or find help. I found tons of people with the same issue since '17 and all questions in support archived without solving (and usually left hanging in Mozilla's side). And bugzilla doesn't even register my account... perfect for people to give up

what is going to happen with Twitter history now? The is something (not the best funded option). In new members of the government are being accounted for their previous posts in social media https://yle.fi/a/74-20039408 but if querying for those become difficult for investigators, how can we make people accountable? and should we? should we allow people to make mistakes in their past and grow from them? and should we vote them? a lot to think about

I hope the are talking how some of the measures of the new goverment are contradictory with saving money. Like first sick day unpaid. That has been proved to make people go to work sick to get paid and this make more people sick, costing more to companies and goverment than paying a single day to a person.

How to screw a perfectly simple email, putting the test in a PDF file made with Microsoft Word where double 't' is converted to tt ligature https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligature_(writing) and then PDF can't handle it, leaving me with incomplete text to send to LibreTranslate that can't be translated... just for a simple text of a few lines without any special formatting beside the ligatures.

Something that worries me avout sustainable operations is the self-complacency with resource consumption because they are sustainable, without considering that the more we use, even if sustainable, means that more production is needed. And production always implies more resources: more solar panels, more windmills, increases on prices taking sustainable resources from people that can't afford them and then have to go for cheaper less sustainable resources, more recycled paper needed, 1/2
