The Biden administration is planning to veto another Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire tomorrow morning. Please contact the White House, and you could also write directly to the US ambassador to the UN. Ask them to vote for the resolution or resign in protest if they won't go against Biden's wishes. Ultimately being against a ceasefire means supporting further war crimes; that's more than enough reason to vote yes against Biden's orders, or resign.

We're getting lots of spammers signing up for accounts on (like with a lot of other small servers on the fediverse in the last day or so).

So I deactivated open registrations on our server. Now all signups will need to be approved by an admin.

Somehow I ended up having to explain the finger heart gesture to my coworkers on our standup this morning. Yes, I'm that cool. I've got my finger on the pulse of the youth. Also, who knew that finger heart is already in ?!

🫰

Also, happy to those who celebrate. :)

In : "Israeli settlements stand in the way of peace. Biden can defund them all"

Interesting idea! The Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are so extensive I'd pretty much given up hope they could be dismantled (unlike the much smaller ones in Gaza that were withdrawn in 2005). With the those in place, a viable two-state solution seems like a non-starter. But maybe this move could be a path forward if Biden has the courage to act on it?

alan,
@alan@subdued.social avatar

FWIW, I'd be fine if people realize that the two-state solution is not viable once they start trying to implement it (mainly, if the settlements can't be moved), but only if that means we end up with a non-sectarian one-state solution where everyone has equal citizenship, equal freedom of movement, and equal protection under the law.

From Amnesty International: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2024/02/israel-opt-new-evidence-of-unlawful-israeli-attacks-in-gaza-causing-mass-civilian-casualties-amid-real-risk-of-genocide/

^^ Note, these are some examples of bombings in that happened in the last couple of months while Rafah was still a safe zone, before the new wave of intense bombing that began yesterday. Most civilian casualties in will never get this level of detailed analysis by a respected, impartial international organization like Amnesty International. Whether you think they are the exception or the norm, they're still war crimes.

New video from @CBCNews about the need for in Canada, and why it matters so much for younger voters. It's disappointing, but no surprise that the two major parties didn't support the proposed , and of course no sign that will change course on his broken campaign promise to support .

People forget that Gov Inslee appointed Hobbs to Secretary of State to get him out of the way in the because he was such an obstructionist. Now, no surprise, he's being an obstructionist in the SoS office.

So I've been using 5Calls.org to make it easy to call my federal representatives (although now I just saved all the numbers as contacts in my phone so I don't use the app much anymore).

But since @resistbot is on Mastodon (and 5Calls is not) I was thinking maybe I should start encouraging people to use that instead?

Does anyone have a preference between 5Calls and Resistbot, in terms of which one I should be nagging my friends and family to use?

alan,
@alan@subdued.social avatar

@anirvan I haven't seen any options for state or local in 5Calls, so yeah that would be a pretty big vote in favor of @resistbot.

alan,
@alan@subdued.social avatar

@mmb Mainly it just gives you the phone numbers you need to call, all in one place. And it can do things like prompt you with scripts and talking points, and setting reminders to call. But yeah, once you're in the habit and you've got the numbers saved, you don't really need it anymore.

The main value IMHO is for people who are new to the process of calling their reps. This can make it much less intimidating.

@urbanistorg Great bit from the article here:

“I tell people as they’re advocating for this, please look at this with an equity lens… They didn’t think about it,” Hobbs said of HB 2250.

As anyone can tell from the list of organizations supporting the bill, Secretary Hobbs couldn’t be more wrong.

Aside: I notice we use both and here in Canada. I will never forgive the internet standards people for going with the 2-letter iso names instead of the 3-letter ones for country-TLDs and language-codes.

3-letter codes would prevent the "is CA Canada or California".

The biggest countries use 2-letter state/prov codes, so 3-letter countries would prevent ambiguity.

My site should be Pxtl.can, written in en-can not Pxtl.ca written in en-ca.

alan,
@alan@subdued.social avatar

@Pxtl At least in my feed, I'm seeing a lot more usage of both and , but very little , FWIW
