In a tell-all essay, she describes the inner workings of newsrooms where double standards and biases sidelined the truth—before she resigned in protest.

So…there is a concerted campaign, with Musk as its mouthpiece, to discredit Signal and get people to switch to Telegram. It’s disinformation, but there’s also useful information in it. The useful information is that a hideous, powerful, right-wing crank — or whoever’s yanking his chain — really, really wants people to use Telegram.

We’ve long known Telegram’s security is weak. But now, in light of this new information, we should move forward assuming that Telegram is actively compromised.

Fun fact: "The Tragedy Of the Commons" is a hoax created by the white nationalist Garrett Hardin to justify stealing land from colonized people and moving it from collective ownership, "rescuing" it from the inevitable tragedy by putting it in the hands of a private owner, who will care for it properly, thanks to "rational self-interest":

Really love this perspective on "slop." https://simonwillison.net/2024/May/8/slop/ Slop is AI-generated content that you might see on social media, when searching online, etc, without asking for it. As @simon says, "Personal AI ethics remains a complicated set of decisions. I think don’t publish slop is a useful baseline."

This is what Israel is branding as antisemetic these days, both of which are true, read the whole article:

“Israel must be vigilant and keep its eyes open. We cannot accept statements like ‘Israel is an apartheid state’ or ‘Israel is an occupying state,’ which have persisted since [PLO Chairman Yasser] Arafat’s speech in 1974 at the U.N. General Assembly,” said Diker, who has published a series of books on the danger of campus antisemitism and BDS organizations.

Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

I keep on looking at this map. The Gaza strip itself is already so small , one of the most densely populated parts of the world. And now everyone is supposed to cram into a minute part of this? And we are all supposed to appreciate this“humanitarian zone” - which has itself been repeatedly bombed already, too.

I told y'all, cops don't do what you think they do.🤷🏿‍♂️

Black folk know this from lived experience. Some white folk only learn this when they go to report a theft or sexual assault and find out that the $11B/year NYPD are not equipped to handle that.

Incredible example of lying with graphs from Caltrans. The bike lane pilot on the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge reduced collisions, but they made it look like collisions increased.

Specifically, they divided collisions by vehicle miles traveled. But California's goal is to reduce vehicle miles traveled. So they took two good things achieved by the pilot, and made them cancel out to look like a bad thing.

Screenshot of the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom's website listing things called for by a climate plan, including: Light-duty vehicle miles traveled (VMT) target of 25% per capita below 1990 levels by 2030

been wanting to make some plotter drawings to raise money for all the gaza gofundmes in my timelines so I started trying out the DEM-to-SVG approach with sentinel-1 data estimates of destroyed areas. Gaza's pretty flat so as terrain it doesn't quite have the same effect but the gaps are still a lot. This is a screenshot from a corner of Khan Younis.

It's the morning rush hour in Downtown Bellingham and, clearly, the newly installed bike lane on Holly Street is leading to hell-in-a-handbasket traffic conditions for area motorists who are now denied one of three travel lanes!

Quelle horreur!

Today, the new minimum wage of $17.28 in my city of Bellingham, WA goes into effect.

Compared to some other cities in the US, this may sound high. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 (since 2009).

Unfortunately, experts have calculated Bellingham's "living wage" closer to $23.52 for an individual and $29.97 for a family of four with two working parents.

According to Redfin, "In March 2024, Bellingham home prices were up 12.2% compared to last year, selling for a median price of $685K."

Average rent for an apartment is $1,863, and average rent for a house is $2,891.

Whatcom County, where Bellingham is located, recorded a 27% jump in unhoused people in 2023 (the most recent data), the highest increase since the point in time survey began in 2008.

One of my weirder and more rewarding hobbies is collecting definitions of "conservativism," and one of the jewels of that collection comes from Corey Robin's must-read book The Reactionary Mind:

Robin's definition of conservativism has enormous explanatory power and I'm always finding fresh ways in which it clarifies my understand of events in the world: a conservative is someone who believes that a minority of people were born to rule, and that everyone else was born to follow their rules, and that the world is in harmony when the born rulers are in charge.

Today - as the conservative project to restore the "natural" order of the ruled and the ruled-over gains momentum - tax lien investing is attracting some of our most rapacious investors - and they're making a killing. In Chicago, Alden Capital spent a measly $1.75m to acquire the tax liens on 600 family homes in Cook County. They now get to charge escalating fees and penalties and usurious interest to those unlucky homeowners. Any homeowner that can't pay loses their home.

This pair of maps is going viral again (FYI they're not based on real data, just vibes, but they do feel about right).

But as far as I can tell everyone's missing the intended black humor here that these are a clear reference to the maps of Palestinian land loss since 1947 that were ubiquitous six months ago. For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/172jcvk/palestinian_loss_of_land_1947_to_2023_1300x1900/
