don’t ruin this illusion for me, but the weird thing about x-files so far is that it doesn’t actually seem to be a show about aliens, cryptids, or what have you. i think mulder & scully have debunked every one so far

albnelson,
@albnelson@lor.sh avatar

@exchgr this may sound way too philosophical, but I think it's a show about "truth" ... and how it isn't always what you think it is. Both M and S have to reckon with that.

La'an and Kirk walking out in the same outfit may be the hardest I'm laughed in Trek, and I was there for Data's floatation device joke.

Always happy to see Modern Library on the screen. Selected Writings of Kant brings an MCM feel to the Overseer’s Office in Vault 33 in Fallout. @bookstodon

When I play Connections, there are times I instinctively know the words are related/go together, but I don’t necessarily know why.

albnelson,
@albnelson@lor.sh avatar

@StillIRise1963 Same. Sometimes it's because they share a linguistic quality (like all being adjectives) but I don't know what the "real" answer is. I frequently don't know the last category that is left over by process of elimination.

@albnelson@lor.sh avatar

@StillIRise1963 Thanks, that makes me feel less dumb. ;-)

"The animal iconography of the site could shed light on the world view and religion of the people."

I get it. So often that's all they have to go on. But what if it's just decorations?

I wonder what people would make of the Bronx based on the decorations on our buildings that could stand the test of time? Let's choose some random things to survive...

How would you describe this culture?

(assume all writing is gone because of an AI info bomb making all text useless)

    @flockofnazguls I read a review of this show with the headline “I’m done with puzzle box shows.”

    @flockofnazguls It may be 1899 that broke me

    @flockofnazguls it was cool but they canceled it so what can I say?

    @flockofnazguls I think your response is justified. We definitely wanted to find out how it all came together.

    Reading in the foreword to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that Verne originally envisioned Captain Nemo as a Polish noble on an underwater campaign of vengeance against the Russian Empire that'd killed his entire family, but that this version was pronounced unprintable by his publisher for political reasons. @bookstodon

    albnelson,
    @albnelson@lor.sh avatar

    @patterfloof @eivind @bookstodon yup, the Wikipedia page gets into the politics and editorial changes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty_Thousand_Leagues_Under_the_Seas

    I may be wrong, but I also think it’s safe to say that a Polish crusader (with the implication of the liberation of oppressed people in Europe) would have been more controversial in France than an Indian one (because screw those Brits)

    albnelson,
    @albnelson@lor.sh avatar

    @patterfloof @eivind @bookstodon if you’re willing to suffer through this old long book review by me, the middle part explains why revolutionary Poles were regarded with such suspicion in Western Europe.

    if anything good can come out of the disaster at the #BritishLibrary, surely it’s a rethink of accepting digital “copies” as fulfilment of legal deposit. @bookstodon

    @slevelt @bookstodon I see from the alt text that it's Noah's Ark but my first thought was "the bark of Peter"

    albnelson,
    @albnelson@lor.sh avatar

    @slevelt @bookstodon it makes me wonder about the shift to the Michelangelo “really old guy” God the Father. Then other Renaissance/early modern folks wouldn’t show God the Father at all, just the Tertragrammaton (sp). I wonder if it’s all a result of Aquinas/scholastics
