Here's an immature Heermann's Gull (Larus heermanni) that I photographed in La Jolla this morning. Another photographer ID'ed it first and when I passed the knowledge on, one lady replied "Oh! That's a lifer for me!" — the Audubon Society's Bird Festival is in town! :D

This little cutie is a Black Turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala). They have a VERY beautiful pattern on the upper side of their wings, which is only visible in flight. I lacked the motivation and dedication to try and photograph it, today. :P Maybe some other time...

These two are Royal Terns (Thalasseus maximus) — the bird in focus is in non-breeding plumage, with a white forehead; the bird in the background has the black breeding plumage on the head.

For #WildlifeWednesday here's a Carpenter Bee digging in on some Golden Eardrops (Ehrendorferia chrysantha).

Golden Eardrops are so-called "fire followers." Their seeds lay dormant in the soil for many years until wildfire burns an area, after which they grow quickly (and tall), stabilizing the soil before slower growing shrubs take over again. Nature is cool.

@Rjdlandscapes I don't stitch much. I struggle with previsualizing how a pano might turn out, so I like my single exposures. This feature turns 16x 45mp files into one 180mp file with refined colors and less noise, so it's pretty fantastic, but the storage "cost"... ugh.

Quite an interesting find from my desert wander in the Coyote Mountains Wilderness yesterday:

Desert Pepperweed or Desert Alyssum (Lepidium fremontii) growing out of the cracks of a canyon wall.

Interesting because there are only very very few observations of this plant in the San Diego and Imperial Counties. :)

... but after the crazy initial hype of "3-6" with 8" locally" we got 1.52"... c'mon! 😜

Happy Birthday, White Sands!

On this day in 1933, White Sands was established as a National Monument (it is now a National Park, re-designated in 2019).

Depending on the time of day and weather, the reflective gypsum crystals of the dunes appear to be beige, pure white, cool blue... we couldn't get enough of it during our 2019 road trip in March. :) (blog archive: https://www.alex-kunz.com/tag/road-trip-march-2019/)
