You may resist now, but it's only a matter of time until you realize the error of your ways.

One thing I wish Mastodon had was a way to annotate your mutes and blocks. You can add a personal, private note for people you follow; you should be able to do the same for blocks and mutes!

For example, I may not remember, months or years from now, that the reason I blocked a seemingly random account was because of their whataboutism in justification of genocide.

This feels appropriate in the moment:

@RickiTarr When I was starting out on an SSRI, working up to the proper dose, I asked my doctor how I could tell if I was taking too much.

She replied, "If you feel dead inside and stop caring about anything, that's too much."

And I realized that that must be how the rest of the world survives without medication: just stop caring!

Now that's an obvious design regression… https://tonsky.me/blog/checkbox/

alopex,

@lanodan And here I was expecting it to end with a discussion of the checkbox's lesser cousin, the ambiguous toggle switch, which is so popular with thing like cookie policy settings.

I read about a new "self-replicating" mRNA vaccine, and my first question is: "What exactly is the 'off' switch for this thing?"

Wow. This is some seriously smelly bullshit.

@Startide @trezzer Everyone on the internet should be required to browse with NoScript, if not permanently then at least for a day, to see all the crap that websites are running on their computers.

LB: has a nice ring to it. It may not take off as quickly as , but I think it's here to stay as a hallmark of our current global state of affairs.

I really hate when people say we need to adapt because covid is endemic. That’s just a lame excuse to keep spreading it. Many viruses in this world are endemic but they aren’t spreading in large numbers everywhere in the world. This level of spread and stupidity needs to stop immediately. Also other viruses aren’t ruining people’s lives. We used to take heart attacks and brain damage seriously.🙈

@Scienceisnotopinions Cholera is endemic. We need to stop worrying and learn to live with it!

Thanks, I hate it.

I mean, I know paper cups have polymers to keep them waterproof, but I hate the fact that I can’t actually get away from plastics or toxic trash, ever, anywhere.

I prefer paper cups and cardboard takeout boxes to plastic clamshells, but I bet those paper products are still coated with plastic to keep them waterproof. Short of bringing tiffin carriers into US culture (can we? please?) I don’t really know how we can do better.

@drahardja I had hoped that COVID might make people rethink take-out disposable culture and turn towards reusable containers, like this! But sadly no.

With streaming becoming our primary (and sometimes ONLY) way to enjoy media, we're back to the ephemeral days of early live radio and TV: if you enjoy something, RECORD IT! You may never get another chance to experience it. You're even doing society a favor by preserving our artistic heritage.

Instead of websites trying to shame people into turning off their ad blockers, they should just put a tip jar where the ads would be.

Suppose you were trying to invent a bright orange powder that could easily dye clothes and be hard to wash off. Using your knowledge of quantum mechanics you'd design this symmetrical molecule where an electron's wavefunction can vibrate back and forth along a chain of carbons at the frequency of green light. Absorbing green light makes it look orange! And this molecule doesn't dissolve in water.

Yes: you'd invent turmeric!

Or more precisely 'curcurmin', the molecule that gives turmeric its special properties.

The black atoms are carbons, the white are hydrogens and the red are oxygens.

Read on and check out what pure curcurmin looks like.

@johncarlosbaez Huh! This booze I picked up recently has a VERY strong and persistent yellow color. It lists saffron as the top billing flavor/ingredient, but I always wondered how much of the color was really from the turmeric.

Did not think to try shining UV light on it before drinking it all!

Back side of the Apologue bottle from the previous image. Focus is on ingredients, including saffron, green cardamom, coriander, turmeric, kalonjig, golden raisin, orange peel, lemon grass, curry leaf, organic cane sugar and neutral grain spirit.

My advice for people new to Mastodon to avoid others swamping you with advice on how to use Mastodon: pretend you've been here all along! You were just disconnected for a bit and had to move servers when you got back online because your old one had disappeared:

  • "I was in a coma for 2 years."
  • "I was at a research station in Antarctica with no internet."
  • "I was working on a top secret program that required me to leave no digital trace."
  • "I was in a cave participating in a study in sensory deprivation, but the researchers forgot about me."
  • "I was staying low until the statute of limitations ran out on something I can not talk about."

@Chrishallbeck It was in Florida, so the blue monster was declared a hero by the governor and went on to become a rising star in the GOP and talking hand on Fox.

Important questions:

Who is/was this fox?!

What was their dying wish that resulted in this moment?

Can they now rest in peace and stop haunting the local bike shop?
