Has anyone made a Mastodon friend finder that looks at all the accounts you follow, grabs their following list, and shows you the most commonly-followed accounts you aren’t following yet?

The smartest line from Ted Lasso was when Ted says something like every man should be able to get up and get out the door and into the world smelling clean and fresh in as long as it takes to listen to Easy Lover by Philip Bailey & Phil Collins once (song is 5:07 long)

Today I crushed it with a 3min shower, about a minute spent on grooming and throwing clothes on and I still got to enjoy the end of the song as I drove away from my house.

@mathowie it takes me longer than that to floss and brush my teeth

Stumbled on a tech history Substack. I’m glad to see someone else in this space, but one of the challenges I see for this writer is that there’s not a lot of color in what they’re building. It jumps straight into the facts, no context, no voice.

I don’t mean to demean the work, to be clear, but I think the framing is a challenge. The article starts with the creator every time out, rather than the cultural context. You don’t get a lot of the “why” in the writing.

@ernie Great article, though I also enjoyed @benjedwards's coverage of this "untold story" in 2015 for Fast Company. Unfortunately, the live version has bad image formatting, but this archived copy is very readable. https://web.archive.org/web/20160608105301/http://www.fastcompany.com/3047428/how-two-bored-1970s-housewives-helped-create-the-pc-industry/

In April 2008, author/artist Lucy Knisley wrote and illustrated this love song about time travel on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qatydEg7muk

Yesterday, Lucy posted this sequel, a collaboration with her past self from the perspective of someone 16 years older. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9qI4g66pnM

@jonty @mattround my bozo bit flipped on Kagi when I saw the founder write “Politics finding its way into tech is one of the reasons we do not have innovation any more” as a response to customers criticizing them for partnering with Brave last December https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/111707573907442638

April is National Poetry Month, and this year, I was honored to help Oregon's tenth poet laureate, Anis Mojgani, expand his wonderful Telepoem Poetry Phoneline with new options to explore. Just call (503) 928-7008 any time this month and you'll get a new poem read to you daily, or use the menus to hear a random poem from the archives or choose any day from the last two years of the project.

You guys should check out this band called Paramore.

They're very good.

@stublag @hotdogsladies they never played it live until 2022 because of the challenging vocals (and still have only played it 15 times total), but their 2023 Bonnaroo performance was better than the original IMO (44:30 mark) https://youtu.be/YuVZnjYX6tw#t=44m30s

@hotdogsladies I got embarrassingly super into Paramore over the last year, particular After Laughter, which is now one of my favorite albums ever.

How Comics Were Made is a visual history of printing cartoons currently funding on Kickstarter, 76% to the goal with under 70 hours to hit it. @glennf exhaustively researched this 288-page full-color book for years, interviewing dozens of mainstream and alternative cartoonists, and I really hope it gets made. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/glennf/how-comics-were-made/

Interesting choice to make a band Pitchfork has barely covered a headliner of the Pitchfork Music Festival

@ernie They also only reviewed two of Alanis Morissette’s 10 albums (not counting her pre-Jagged Little Pill work), and one of those was an April Fool’s joke, giving Under Rug Swept an 8.2. They could be such assholes. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/5429-under-rug-swept/

Last week I read about a great web front-end for Mastodon but I can't remember what it's called.

Can you help me out?

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@kfury it might have been me talking about Phanpy, which is now my dedicated app on both desktop and mobile, the only PWA that’s ever replaced a native iPhone app for me https://phanpy.social/

andybaio, to random
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

Just popping in to say that Phanpy is my new favorite Mastodon web app. The way it handles threads, alt-text, quote-tweets, drafts, trends, grouped notifications, etc... So much better than anything else I've used, including Elk. Fully customizable layout, multiple accounts. (Even works well as a PWA on mobile.) Give it a try. https://phanpy.social/

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

Phanpy has now replaced Ivory as my favorite Mastodon app on mobile, too. I moved it to my home screen. This is the first time I’ve ever replaced a native iOS app with a PWA.

Essential reading for any Disney fans: @cabel won an auction of rare Disney Dixieland jazz 78rpms, and in the process of digitizing them, stumbled on a long-lost song cut from Cinderella, unheard for 75 years. https://cabel.com/2024/02/13/firehouse-five-and-the-cinderella-surprise/

Hurt Party: A Game of Bad Apologies is live on Kickstarter! @ami's latest party game pokes fun at all of the terrible ways we say we're sorry, a ridiculous and snarky departure from her past games. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/amibaio/hurt-party

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

As Pink Tiger Games has grown, I've found myself spending more and more time supporting the business as it's taken off. I do the visual design, print production, editing, and websites for all of Ami's games, (now on game #6!) and we've traveled across the country together to conferences and expos where she's exhibiting. I love every bit of it, and I'm so proud of @ami and grateful for the fans who support us. 💕

i can sort of understand why some people have continued using twitter but i cannot for the life of me imagine what motivates people to call it X

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@annika @xor Same. Twitter is dead in name and spirit. All that’s left of it, like the domain name and community holdovers, are vestigial remnants they can’t figure out how to get rid of without fully breaking it.

@ernie @mattl The story of Glimpse is a great example of why “just fork it if you don’t like it” is a cop-out.
