@kissane @jwz @film_girl FWIW they added data export to the Settings section of their site on June 15, 2015, about ten months after launch. (Unfortunately, the IA archives are spotty for these posts.) https://web.archive.org/web/20220608052324/https://ello.co/wtf/resources/community-and-product-updates/

I wrote a long deep-dive into the history of Ello, from its launch and funding to its quiet sale and sudden death last year, noticed only by the community of artists and writers who used and loved it. https://waxy.org/2024/01/the-quiet-death-of-ellos-big-dreams/

@jesseplusplus It's possible that their acquisition agreement had a clause in it that they wouldn't be able to run ads or sell user data to third parties, but already, selling all the user data to Talenthouse seems like it violated the spirit of the charter! And once they were acquired, the PBC was immediately terminated, along with its charter.

Last month, @tomcoates was one of only ~20 people at a meeting at Meta's SF offices where the Threads team talked openly about their plans for integrating it with the Fediverse, including their broad roadmap, motivations, and plans for content moderation and personalization. Tom posted his extensive notes and thoughts from the meeting, and it's well worth reading for anyone interested in the subject. http://plasticbag.org/archives/2024/01/how-threads-will-integrate-with-the-fediverse/

It's that time of the year: here's my "Christmas Music That Won't Make You Murder Someone" playlist, a collection of excellent instrumental jazz/soul/blues albums on Spotify, mostly from the 1960s/1970s and inspired by my love of Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas. Suggestions welcome! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3rBLTMYAyi9anBhYRXUJSV

My cheap Surfshark subscription is finally coming to an end. Hopefully I'm beyond needing it now, I think all my US accounts that required VPN are now closed.

I did not appreciate the dark patterns around unsubscribing. You have to visit the help center and use "live chat" or email. A lot of people would probably be turned off by live chat, but it was completely automated and I was unsubscribed within a couple minutes (after several "are you sure" deflection attempts).

If you’re wondering how X’s advertiser crisis is going, they’re now endlessly showing me the same ad, selling a bra for older women, after every four tweets. All from different fake user accounts so they’re unblockable.

Did you love Yahoo! Pipes and miss it? I sure did. I wrote this history of the graphical web-based processing tool that sure seemed like the future when it was introduced! https://retool.com/pipes I interviewed the core team and several other folks so we could finally have a definitive history. (And forget my words, even—the illustrations are amazing!)

This is part of a series at Retool, a visual programming tools company, that decided to make sure the past wasn’t forgotten.

The Pipes 404 error “Something has gotten into our Pipes!”
Caricatures of the Yahoo! Pipes team and managers (Bradley, Ed, Jonathan, Catrina, Pasha, Kevin, Daniel)
The word “Pipes” in cement, a bit of minor product vandalism at a Yahoo! building

This is apparently an internal Automattic memo making the rounds on Tumblr, indicating that they’ve failed to get Tumblr activity/revenue up since its 2019 acquisition and it will now be maintained by a skeleton crew of Trust & Safety and support folks, with the majority of its 139 employees moving to other projects inside Automattic.

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@flit @stefan cancelled two days after it started apparently, see the replies here https://mastodon.social/

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@donw From the former staffer who posted this, it will continue to have T&S and support, but all of “Bumblr” (product, engineering, editorial, marketing) will move off the product.

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@davidbisset According to the former staffer who posted the screenshot on Tumblr, “Bumblr” refers to the product team that worked on Tumblr at Automattic. T&S and support were separate teams.

@jessamyn Not sure where the link went, I’ve only seen was the screenshot, posted by a former Tumblr staffer.

Automattic founder/CEO Matt Mullenweg posted the complete version of the internal post on his Tumblr, originally published internally on October 5, along with some valuable context about what it means for Tumblr going forward. https://www.tumblr.com/photomatt/733551497286172672/translation-of-internalspeak-to-externalspeak

Matt’s answering questions from the Tumblr community here, which is super interesting and points to some of the challenges of making Tumblr sustainable. “Out of the 11.5M monthly active users of Tumblr, only about 27k have subscribed, or about 0.2%. If that were 10% or 20% we could run the site forever.” https://www.tumblr.com/photomatt

there’s something hilariously grinchy about filling a massive convention center with every amazing new toy and game, and then banning kids from the premises

@grumpygamer after walking around for a couple hours this morning, I see what you mean! the toys/games themselves are great, but it’s extremely sales-focused. i can’t go near the toys without getting accosted by reps
