Re-reading my 2016 post about why writing on your own site is still a good idea, this paragraph jumped out at me. https://waxy.org/2016/11/redesigning-waxy-2016-edition/

Question for my ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canadian friends. While digging through ancient photos for my Storyeum post, I found this photo of a signed photo on the wall of a random restaurant in Vancouver BC.

Who??? Who is this???

@cabel Thatโ€™s Jere Ring, professional entertainer! (Found via running the image through Tineye, which led to a thumbnail of a dead Instagram image, but Tineye on the thumbnail led to Discogs of the CD.) http://www.jerering.com/

Canโ€™t say Iโ€™m surprised to learn Stability AIโ€™s CEO has a history of unethical business practices. The whole business was founded on taking credit for Stable Diffusion. https://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrickcai/2023/06/04/stable-diffusion-emad-mostaque-stability-ai-exaggeration/

Ever wonder what the rest of Citizen Kane looked like? Got AI to generate the other 78 years of Charles Foster Kaneโ€™s life not depicted in the film, from potty training and first steps to board meetings and tax audits. Over 200,000 hours of him sleeping, itโ€™s boring as fuck

This urban exploration YouTube channel I follow posted a video today exploring a house they found in Westchester County, New York that's literally splitting in half, but inside is like a time capsule from the 1960s. Photo albums and diaries, 1964 World's Fair memorabilia, 1920s ephemera in the attic... But it's all gone now: the house was demolished last week "with pretty much everything inside." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRIGBgwErP4

This Psychonauts 2 project update says that former game crowdfunding platform Fig is going offline this Sunday, May 28, taking down eight years of project updates and archives. Fig apparently hasn't announced this publicly anywhere. "Fig.co, including the Psychonauts 2 backer page, will no longer exist after May 28th 2023." https://www.fig.co/campaigns/psychonauts-2/updates/1707

Iโ€˜ve never seen anything like Bobby Fingers and his celebrity diorama videos. The pseudonymous Irish model-maker behind them only made three so far, but each one is an unhinged masterpiece, so I reached out to him to learn more. https://waxy.org/2023/05/the-unhinged-miniature-world-of-bobby-fingers/

They were also talking about Bluesky. Federated social media enthusiasts? They paid their bill and left. Probably for the best, I came dangerously close to introducing myself.

Can some Mastodon expert explain what determines which "Publishers" (i.e. domains) are eligible for admin approval, and can therefore appear in the Trending News/Links section of Explore? I've noticed that it's almost exclusively news articles, and never (for example) a YouTube video or sites like Neal.fun, MSCHF, etc. I've looked in the code, and can't figure out where that's defined.

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@jwildeboer I know, I'm an admin too. I'm asking how Mastodon determines which Publishers/domains are eligible to be allowed/disallowed by admins for the Trending links section. YouTube.com, for example, will apparently never appear as a Publisher in the trends moderation UI even if there's a very popular YouTube video. Why not? Where's that defined in the code?

andybaio,
@andybaio@xoxo.zone avatar

@jwildeboer Mastodon has its own internal concept of a โ€œpublisherโ€ (ie domains) for trending links.
