This is great but can we please also have Fedora (& Ubuntu, etc.) acknowledge they started shipping operating systems without a functional screen reader when they switched to Wayland and that that’s still the case?

This is not to name and shame. Unless we acknowledge this as an error on par with shipping without monitor support and unless the culture is altered to make accessibility a showstopper, it’ll happen again.

LiberalArtist,
@LiberalArtist@mastodon.social avatar

@aral Again, I agree that accessibility is of utmost importance and that cultural changes are needed to emphasize it from the beginning. I just think systems that need some non-default configuration for a functional screen reader are importantly different than "operating systems without a functional screen reader".

Both X and Wayland have limitations that in some use-cases make them not viable. Until Wayland catches up, we each get to decide if we prefer Wayland's bugs or X's bugs.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@LiberalArtist All I’m saying is that if you believe that, then shipping with Wayland without monitor support is also different than “operating systems without functional monitor support.” (Unless your point is that there are different criteria for what is acceptable for sighted people – which, clearly, is the case because those operating systems are shipping with monitor support by default but without screen reader support.)

So tonight might have ended in karaoke 🙊

The amazing singer I’m with is Holly and any screw ups are courtesy of me – have loved the song forever, but my first time singing it :)

(Video by Sandy, the lovely bartender who introduced us; apologies for the quality.)

A slightly blurry video of two people singing Suddenly Seymour at karaoke in a pub.

@aral i can imagine you doing George Michael, The Killers, and Elton John songs. well. What are your favorite artists to sing?

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@awoodsnet My background, not unsurprisingly, is in musical theatre :)

But I might have had a band once when I was very young where we did Deep Purple, The Doors, etc.

What if we changed the rules so that if a US presidential candidate that supports arming Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people wins, 15,000 American kids are randomly chosen and killed. (Unlike Palestinian kids, they’d be killed as painlessly as possible, not screaming in anguish from having been blown apart by American bombs.)

What would you do? Still vote for Biden as is or move heaven and earth to have him change his policies and/or get the Democrats to pick another candidate?

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@aral I’m not missing anything. This is an absurd hypothetical that doesn’t make the point you think it does.

Unless you’re just trying to start fights online. Then it does exactly what you want it to do.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@MisuseCase Yep, fights online. That’s the key thing here. Not an ongoing genocide courtesy of American bombs.

Democracy is more than just a polite vote every four years and an Instagram photo of your achievement sticker.

@aral You get a sticker? I never got one...

USian liberals, real talk: If Biden were selling arms to a group that had so far killed over 35,000 Americans, including over 15,000 kids, you wouldn’t be telling folks to vote for him. You’d be in the streets demanding he be removed from power. The reason you’re not? Because it’s Brown people on the other side of the world being slaughtered and you, quite frankly, couldn’t give a shit.

sergi,
@sergi@floss.social avatar

@aral To anybody replying to this post: Aral has not mentioned at any moment who to vote, stop talking about voting and Trump.

What I am understanding is that the POTUS is doing something wrong and nobody dares to criticize him and show dissatisfaction to make him change.

You can still vote for a candidate and ask for accountability. Heck, maybe changing what he is doing actually helps him win!

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Given the outpouring of empathy and care as well as the condemnation of violence from European politicians, can someone please inform them that over 35,000 Prime Minister Robert Ficos have been murdered in Gaza by Israel, including over 15,000 baby Prime Minister Robert Ficos.

Cause with this one you begin to sound as hypocritic as those you so love to blame of being such. Sorry.

@aurisc4 Yes, the post is definitely about hypocrisy but you’ve failed to grasp how.

If your democratic process leaves you no option but to vote for genocide, your democratic process has already failed.

distantreplay,

@aral It's really not at all clear if you are advocating to fix democratic processes or abandon them.

And I think it's very troubling that your post can be fairly interpreted either way.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@josh @cferdinandi All I’m saying is that if it was over 35,000 Americans killed and over 15,000 American kids murdered because of guns that Biden sold, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. The sad truth is that dead Brown folks on the other side of the world just doesn’t tilt the scales the same way.

(And the students protesting don’t have tons of privilege and they are, perhaps more than anyone right now, having an impact.)

@whvholst What, no? Didn’t you read what I wrote? This is the good guy who kills Palestinian kids en masse, not the bad guy who will kill even more Palestinian kids en masse. (It’s very important to support just the right amount of genocide lest people think you heartless.)

  • is carrying out in .

  • Context! You must go back… all the way to October 7.

  • Sure, let’s go back: let’s go back 76 years to May 15, 1948, to the ; the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people where 750,000 people were “expelled from their homes or made to flee, at first by Zionist paramilitaries through various violent means, and after the establishment of the State of Israel, by the Israel Defense Forces.” (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakba)

  • No, no, not like that.

@lk108@social.tchncs.de avatar

@aral But further back, up to 1945, there was something else.. we have to acknowledge and transform all the trauma, or it will never end
