Some fediverse instance admins: “How cool, Meta invited us to the adult table.”

Yes, they did.

Because you’re what’s for dinner.

@Bossito There is a world of difference between them implementing a protocol and the community that already uses that protocol welcoming them with a red carpet.

If you don‘t see a problem, you haven’t been paying attention. Look at what happened to the web. XMPP. Email. Look up embrace, extend, extinguish.

None of what we‘re worried about is conjecture. It is based on past experience with the enclosure of the commons by Silicon Valley venture capitalists, startups, and public corporations.

@sanjay191_18 No idea. Have my suspicions from threads I’ve seen but I’ll keep them to myself until there’s proof.

@CelloMomOnCars @breadandcircuses @shepgo @largess Assuming the statistic is from here, it’s apparently 50 incidents/week with 2 fatalities/week.

Not to downplay how horrible that still is but it’s apparently not 50 deaths.

Was away for a week visiting my parents. Don’t get to see them nearly enough, in no small part thanks to our lovely “European Values” meaning they have to jump through more hoops to come visit us in Ireland than they can manage at their age. You see, we don’t really see non-Europeans as human in Europe. They’re something less. A potential threat.

I may have an EU passport and pass for white but I never forget that. In fact, I think about it every time I miss my parents.

@ecosurrealism @koherecoWatchdog @kkarhan @tio @stux Hey folks, @stux and I follow each other and I don’t see why they’d implement some sort of shadow banning/block – I’m assuming this is some shortcoming of federation/the software/setup; I don’t think we need to jump to conclusions. From what I’ve seen, they’re doing a great job of moderating their instance and providing a valuable service to the community.

@MrsGalaxy I’m so sorry. Clearly, it would be absolutely devastating for a broke-ass, dilapidated country like Germany if, say, you really did decide to have your mom stay with you… say (goodness forbid) if you needed to look after her, for example. The whole place would crumble.

(I guess Europeans never take care of elderly family members so they have no point of reference to comprehend such a thing from a human perspective. Maybe some day, when they’re more civilized, they’ll understand.)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@JohnLoader6 Oh, we did.

(We used to live in the UK before they voted the Tories in again.)

But the real problem is the xenophobia and racism itself, of course, and not whether you’re privileged enough to be part of the group perpetuating it instead of the group that’s its victim.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@Pierrette @MrsGalaxy It is not “over the board”; it is specifically designed to be as insulting and offensive as possible to anyone who would be insulted and offended by the criticism and shaming of a xenophobic and racist policy instead of the xenophobic and racist policy itself.

panos, to internet

There is another reason I find the discussion about blocking 's project interesting:

I've been saying for a while now that the is a new and different beast, and whoever tries to understand it simply as a direct social media replacement misses the whole picture. We're also federated communities, just as much.

Today we see a lot of concern about "what will the do" with . Wanna know what we will do? Everything and nothing. Because the Fediverse is not one entity. This is the essence of its decentralized nature - and that's cool. If your server intends to block Meta servers completely - cool. If not, cool again.

But if you expect a unified response on something like that, you're in for a disappointment.

This is not a "schism", a "problem", something to "solve". This is just decentralization in practice. We don't need to have the same blocklists, and that's ok. Open protocols are not something you can control, so chill. When the time comes for this subject, choose a server with a policy that you agree with. But if you're worried that we won't all have one unified stance... are you sure you actually like ?

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@panos @luthien1126 Yes, there is something wrong with its design. It adopts the tech stack of Big Tech along with its scaling characteristics. It has inherent economies of scale. And yes, it is inevitable.

But it’s also a stopgap and that has immediate, real-world value today. Especially for those of us working on alternatives that don’t have that design flaw like the Small Web (instances of one that connect to one another directly).

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@panos @luthien1126 Oh I agree. The greatest value of the fediverse has been to get people (some people; it’s not mainstream as you say, but it’s far more mainstream than any of the other attempts have been) thinking in the right direction. And yes, once it becomes commonly accepted that it has been Web 2.0-ified by Silicon Valley, that’s what will drive folks to the Small Web. I’m just saying it’d be nice to have enough time to make sure it’s there when that happens.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@panos @luthien1126 The fediverse isn’t decentralised, it is federated. What’s the difference? Give Meta and the other Silicon Valley companies a year or two and you’ll see.

They never need more than the benefit of the doubt and a handful of useful idiots to legitimise them until they gain network effects.

(It’s inevitable that they will take over this space given its design but social pressure could delay it. But it’s lacking where it’s needed the most.)

aral, to random
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

I love it. There’s a poll ongoing about whether folks would ban a Meta (Instagram/Facebook) instance and people are like “well, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt.”

I really have no words.

Is it learned helplessness? Stockholm Syndrome? Masochism? Something else?

I just don‘t get it.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@fabiscafe I don’t. That was sarcasm.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@tedb Working on it. (Not for fediverse, that’s impractical. For Small Web.)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@fabiscafe Yes, let’s see how the trillion-dollar, publicly-traded mass surveillance machine joins. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they’ve changed.

    @dasnet PS. Having read your bio, is there anywhere I can learn more about your work because I’d love to :)

    aral,
    @aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

    @dasnet Thanks so much :) The other project’s Domain and no worries, I haven’t had time to properly document it as it’s still not feature complete (this is the third rewrite, this time in Kitten).

    Site.js was my first attempt. It does run a lot of our own sites (my blog, the small-tech.org site, Laura’s site, etc.) but, yes, it’s an evolutionary dead end. It was a great first draft and a good way to see what works/doesn’t in production but all my new work is based on Kitten.

    aral,
    @aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

    @dasnet Thanks for the kind words. Happy to hear you’re playing with it. Which platform are you on?

    (If you run into any issues or get stuck, just let me know.) :)
