๐ŸงตSometimes friends of mine say they feel guilt they aren't recycling more, or swapping out their lightbulbs for more efficient ones.

But those aren't really very important things to do to lower your emissions.

I think it's important that we all have a basic mental map of what really are the effective consumer choices.

This chart from Kimberly Nicholas and Seth Wynes at Lund University (2017) deserves to be more widely known.

Whenever someone tells you that the climate crisis is a personal responsibility issue, show them this:

The climate crisis is a billionaires crisis, a trillion-dollar corporations crisis, a capitalism crisis, a systemic inequality crisis.

A group of over 40 European organisations have recently released a statement calling for the EU to set up a European Public Digital Infrastructure Fund.

They call for this fund to support Digital Public Spaces, that are, among other things, based in FOSS, and ensure privacy by design. The statement gives three examples: , and , stating that they would benefit from such a fund to further flourish.

Entire statement: https://shared-digital.eu/statement/

aral,

@yetzt @PrototypeFund They do seem great but, sadly (for us), only for German folks :)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@fediversereport Gee, who knows, we might even get some funding from that given thatโ€™s exactly what weโ€™re building. I wonโ€™t hold my breath though given we havenโ€™t received a single euro of European funding today date (and not for lack of trying).

After Reddit's beyond-arrogant CEO dismissed the subreddit blackout as just posturing, moderators of discussions extended the blackout. This is the only sensible response to the company's contempt.

Please stay the course.

For my part, I'm canceling my Reddit account and looking at decentralized alternatives.

Researchers have devised a novel attack that recovers the secret encryption keys stored in smart cards and smartphones by using cameras in iPhones or commercial surveillance systems to video record power LEDs that show when the card reader or smartphone is turned on.

The attacks enable a new way to exploit two previously disclosed side channels, a class of attack that measures physical effects that leak from a device as it performs a cryptographic operation. The first attack uses an Internet-connected surveillance camera to take a high-speed video of the power LED on a smart card readerโ€”or of an attached peripheral deviceโ€”to pull a 256-bit ECDSA key off a government-approved smartcard. The other allowed the researchers to recover the private SIKE key of a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone by training the camera of an iPhone 13 on the power LED of a USB speaker connected to the handset.

I'm looking for blogs or online authors that explore the relationship between technology and society/individuals from the lens of philosophy of technology, media studies, or sociology. Any recommendations?

I know of The Convivial Society by Michael Sacasas (active), as well as Real Life Magazine (inactive). Any others?

@ggpsv I donโ€™t actively blog about the problem (busy right now trying code up a potential solution) but you can find a few of the things Iโ€™ve written in the past (as well as talks on the subject) at https://ar.al
