Did you get the booster? If not:

“A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that most adults who haven’t received an updated COVID-19 booster shot have 'relatively little remaining protection' against hospitalization compared to the unvaccinated.”

Just 17% of Americans have received the COVID booster. Almost 75% of people in the US haven't received a jab in over 12 months. Protection is fading and COVID is mutating. Be safe!

The number of hospitalized people with in Ireland on May 26:

2023: 243
2022: 185
2021: 99
2020: 287

We've traded brief, sharp spikes and deep, low troughs for a constant moderate level of infections and disease. All of which would be fine if COVID was, in fact, mild “like the flu,” only hundreds of studies tell us COVID can damage brains, hearts, and immune systems, leading to disabilities and diminished quality of life. when you can in crowds.

@coyoty @GrettaToot For the record, I have met drag performers, and I'm not sure what that has to do with the point of the post. what sort of "expertise" do you think is required to know that mass shootings in school have a worst impact on children than drag shows or revered books.

Not sure what to make of this study of mortality in nursing homes. We know with good ventilation/filtration, COVID levels can be reduced. But the study found "SARS-CoV-2 could be detected in aerosol samples of common spaces (used by either residents or staff) up to 52 days after the initial infection."

Is someone in your household positive? Don't take it lightly. The risks of household spread are INCREASING with newer variants. "The infection risk adjusted for presence of prior infection and age was 58% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 49–68%) in households currently exposed to pre-Delta lineages and 90% (95% CI: 74–100%) among those exposed to Omicron BA.5 (detected May – September 2022)."

@leighms I don't believe in people being “totally immune,” and like you, I've not had COVID even though my wife has. I think a million people bring COVID into households, and random chance makes some people (like you and me) get lucky. But, we might not be lucky with next variant.

People say flying is safe while spreads. It isn't. In general, planes are safer in the air, but on the ground (boarding, taxiing, deplaning), air is worse, nor is there a guarantee filters are working well in flight. I'm collecting the CO2 readings people share on Twitter while traveling. Here are two. Under 800 is considered safer.

What I don't get is why people don't fly masked. When is it easier to wear a mask than when sitting quietly in a chair for hours?!

Chart of CO2 during a flight. In the air, CO2 levels were in a safer zone (near 800 ppm) but during boarding and deplaning, it exceeded 1600 ppm.

@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@crackedshamrock I think I may be masked on planes and in airports forever. And I don't embarrass easily, so that's okay. :)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@driusan Thanks for sharing. I'm curious, was the spike during boarding and the red section that follows the flight? Or were portions of that in airports or other locations?

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@driusan Thanks for sharing some more info. I appreciate people tracking this. (My wife thinks I'm cautious enough and doesn't want me carrying and focusing on a CO2 monitor.)

Type 1 diabetes diagnoses are more than 50% greater in children with .

“The age- and sex-adjusted hazard ratio for type 1 diabetes development in 2020-2021 was 1.57 (95% CI, 1.32-1.88; P < .001) with any COVID-19 diagnosis and 1.69 (95% CI, 1.31-2.18; P < .001) when only virus-confirmed cases were considered.”

@Remittancegirl Well, on the one hand, if the data really supported it, I wouldn't object if the vox populi decided COVID was over. But the data tells another story, so yes, it's very annoying (and risky.)

“China is facing a new wave of infections that could see as many as 65 million cases per week by the end of June.”

Let's put that in perspective: At its peak last December, during China's giant “let 'er rip” surge, the world reported less than 45 million weekly cases. China could exceed the global COVID peak by almost 50% in a month.

I wonder what all that transmission will do to COVID mutations. No, not wonder, I fear what it will do.

https://covid19.who.int/

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@froukehe9 Not an easy/single answer. First, of course, COVID doesn't confer strong immunity. Second, COVID's mutating. Third, lots of masks in certain settings, but perhaps not once people are at work, from what I hear. And, of course, masks help, but they're not magic. I think more masking with better masks would help, but China hasn't gotten to the same place as the rest of the world with a diversity of variants--much like the other nations in 2020-22, they're going to see significant waves.
