The GOP is simply reprehensible. I don't understand how any citizen can vote for any GOP candidate. The entire party is claiming the Trump fraud trial was a political hit job. The "law and order" party wants neither. (1/6)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

An independent grand jury heard the evidence and said there was cause to believe a crime was committed, so they indicted Trump. A fair trial was held where Trump could call witnesses, including himself (and, as always, after saying he couldn't wait to testify and griping about the gag order, the coward was not willing to take the stand.) Then, an independent jury of Trump's peers (including one who said Truth Social was their ONLY source of news) found him guilty on all 34 counts. (2/6)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

The GOP could use this as an opportunity to rid themselves of all the MAGA baggage, and instead, they are unifying to lie to Americans about a fair trial. They're doing so to support a convicted felon, serial adulterer, and sex abuser who lied about cheating on his wife with a porn star, encouraged a violent insurrection, and calls the people arrested for violently attacking Capitol cops "hostages." (3/6)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

The GOP isn't a political party, any longer. They don't stand for anything but Trump. They don't care that he commits crimes, steals from charities, abuses women, cheats on his wives, defrauds customers, jeopardizes US security, lies about the 2020 election, and promises to weaponize the justice system (ironically, the very thing the GOP accuses Biden of doing with no evidence or justification.) (4/6)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

Some of you are angry at Biden for very specific reasons. You have a right to be disappointed. But PLEASE see the bigger picture. Don't become a single-issue voter and ignore the incredible damage the GOP and Trump will do if we hand them power in 2024. We can save the planet, protect US security, ensure women's rights, improve equity, and protect democracy. Or, we can feel smug that Biden didn't "deserve" our vote and then watch the world burn. (5/6)

Consider Project 2025. Ask yourself if that's the world you want for yourself and your kids. Then vote like lives depend on it.

Every election. Every race. Every Democrat.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@mastobit I think Sarah is unfair to Biden. Again, I am not suggesting Biden is above criticism or that he has done everything we'd want. But to suggest Biden has done nothing is simply, factually wrong. And it's posts like this that are why I make posts like mine.

On Memorial Day, we remember those who lost their lives protecting their nation. They didn't agree with every policy or decision in Washington, yet they served and sacrificed.

This November, you also have an opportunity to protect the nation, even though you may disagree with many of its policies. You can do so simply by voting.

Read about the GOP's Project 2025. Then to protect democracy, voting rights, the environment, women, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, and all Americans.

Someone told me that the estimate of infections is wrong because of vaccinations. Let's be very clear: Vaccinations are moderately effective against hospitalization but quickly get ineffective against infection.

Just 22.5% of adults reported having received an updated 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine since September 14, 2023. Second, the XBB booster effectiveness against infection is just 20.4% after 20 weeks. Risks are greater than most know.

I am seeing a lot of hubbub over a third case of in a human in the US.

Just to be clear: Right now, in our "lowest" point of in almost a year, 278 Americans are being infected EVERY MINUTE. Ten percent or more will go on to suffer months or years of Long COVID symptoms. Some will have damaged brains, hearts, and other organs.

We shouldn't lose focus on the immediate and real risks we face of COVID.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@kdawson Oops, that was supposed to be per minute. Sorry--correcting.

It's based on wastewater estimates: https://www.pmc19.com/data/index.php

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@melanie For the record, my math was wrong--should've been 278 new infections per minute, not per second. (But your point remains the same.)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@thatkatharine That is a completely incorrect comparison. I was one of the early people posting about COVID risks in February 2020 because of its human to human infection rate. There is NOT human to human infections of bird flu. Which is why we've just THREE bird flu cases in months, yet months into the COVID pandemic we had hundreds of millions of infections. The whole point is that these are NOT the same kinds of risks.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@thatkatharine Perhaps, but it's also a huge fallacy to keep screaming headlines about a virus that has infected five people and ignore the virus that today has caused 1 of every 20 American adults to suffer from Long COVID symptoms. We can keep raising red alerts for things that are clearly not imminent risks and then wonder why no one will listen to us about the risks we really do face with COVID.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@thatkatharine You're only proving my point. Bird flu has been a concern for twenty years, and we have three cases, all non-infectious, this year.

I'm not suggesting that NO ONE pay attention to bird flu, but the general population doesn't need to hear about three cases of bird flu as they should the 10 million cases of COVID and 1 million new Long COVID sufferers this month.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@Threadbane @melanie Given COVID levels in wastewater, that is, in fact, the correct estimate. PMC, which has been accurate, estimates 2.8M infections a week.

I am not sure why you think vaccinations will have a great impact. First, just 22.5% of adults reported having received an updated 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine since September 14, 2023. Second, the XBB booster effectiveness against infection is just 20.4% after 20 weeks.

The data is the data. We should have greater concern.

You should take up smoking. The risk from one pack is negligible!

You should drive drunk. The chance of a serious accident from one impaired trip is slim.

You should spend time in concerts, events and crowded bars unmasked. The odds of getting and from one activity is quite low.

Of course, if you do all of those things often, the risks rapidly accumulate and a significant share of people will harm themselves or others. But, we don't care about that any more, right?

Long-term risks vary by severity. STUDY:

Among non-hospitalized individuals, the increased risk of death was no longer present after the first year of infection, and risk of incident PASC declined over the 3 years but still contributed 9.6 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) per 1,000 persons in the third year. (1/2)

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

Among hospitalized individuals, risk of death declined but remained significantly elevated in the third year after infection (incidence rate ratio: 1.29). Risk of incident PASC declined over the 3 years, but substantial residual risk remained in the third year, leading to 90.0 DALYs per 1,000 persons.

"our findings show reduction of risks over time, but the burden of mortality and health loss remains in the third year among hospitalized individuals."

Even though the prevalence of the XBB.1.5 subvariant decreased from 10% to less than 1%, last fall's XBB.1.5 vaccine offers SOME protection. STUDY on vaccine effectiveness:

AGAINST INFECTION: 52.2% after 4 weeks, 32.6% after 10 weeks and 20.4% after 20 weeks.

AGAINST HOSPITALIZATION: 66.8% after 4 weeks and decreased to 57.1% after 10 weeks.

Ironic: Amid rising anti-mask rules for "security," a STUDY shows that sunglasses are more effective than masks in hiding identity. Instead of banning safe masks, maybe conservatives should try banning sunglasses instead and see how their constituents react.

I continue to opt out of all conferences, including my own employer's, to avoid a higher-risk environment for . But, I feel guilty doing so. I feel as if I'm not supporting our business like others. Yet today, with our big annual conference five days away, I spoke with two people who will be at the conference who today are just 'getting the flu,' and I'm reminded of why I made the decision not to attend.

New STUDY finds that those with have an 8x greater risk of acute respiratory complications or post-acute respiratory sequela. "Furthermore, while the excess post-acute risk diminished with time following SARS-CoV-2 infection, it persisted beyond 6 months post-infection. "
