And the last question (hope it's okay that this ended up being a Q8, @trouble)

Q8. What's the most recent thing you bought/added to your bike? Or clothing, or any cycling related thing. Anything new or fun?

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@ascentale @trouble A8. I bought a new motor kit for my Cetma Cargo! It arrives on Monday. I gave up troubleshooting the old one and am just replacing the whole thing. At least now I’ll have some spare parts :)

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

They are also working on improving safety - they use XT90 power connectors and build their batteries with name-brand cells. I’m realistically hoping to get a couple of years of use from this kit before it dies. https://www.electrifybike.com/products/tsdz2b-osf-upgrade-motor-kit-250-750w #Cetma #EBikeConversion #ebike #CargoBike #Tongsheng #TSDZ2 (2/2)

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@Andres4NY @ascentale @trouble I went with a new Tongsheng kit from Electrify Bike (I prefer the torque sensor over the Bagang cadence sensor for hauling cargo). The cost was more than ordering all the parts from AliExpress but I’ll get support from a US company that is active in developing the open source software and actually responds to email questions. We're hosting a conversation about congestion pricing with @gbhnews! Join us on June 10:

@streetsblogmass @gbhnews Any way to register to join via Zoom? MassDOT said that tolling or pricing for the new Cape Cod bridges isn’t in the scope of the project, so it’s just bigger, wider, more lanes, more traffic traveling at highway speeds that ends up on local streets that can’t handle it. This isn’t just a Boston problem. Is there a way to fund and build transit & infrastructure so there are options beyond driving everywhere?

Anyone have experience with Edge Lane Roads? They seem like a great solution for streets that have constrained widths or are many years away from ever getting sidewalks or bike lanes. Here’s a great video about them from Vail, Colorado: https://vimeo.com/936813895

I wish Urban Arrow sold these bikes in the US. They look like incredibly handy utility bikes that could replace a lot of truck trips. https://puntarella.party/@acasalotti/112280261282504835

Rode the Cetma across town a couple of times this morning with the trailer, a bike, and a bunch of random stuff. Not fun on the hills without the motor!

@moira asks a question about inner tubes that I've also been thinking about as I deal with so many flat tires:

Q4. How long do replacement tubes hold up in storage? And should tubes be changed out occasionally before they fail, and is it a time thing or a distance ridden thing?

Asking because I've had a replacement tube in my road repair kit for a while and I have no idea when or if I should swap it out.

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@ascentale @moira A4. If they’re exposed to heat or cold they can get brittle or sticky. It happens faster in extreme temps or if they’re exposed to light. If it’s crachked anywhere, don’t use it. (They make good belts if you like to upcycle stuff.)

Welcome to the April 12th BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction, inspired by comment from @rodbotic:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? What does a typical ride for you look like? Share a photo if you'd like.

@moira @ascentale @rodbotic Haha - we have turkeys, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, bunnies, chipmunks, turtles, raccoons, deer, otters, birds of all sorts… and that’s just on land! If you’ve never seen turkeys fly, put that on your bucket list. It’s quite a sight!

@streetsblogmass It will be interesting to see the list of eligible bikes and what retailers end up participating. The Cape Cod rebate program still restricts its program to Class 1 bikes, and there are only 7 shops participating (three are in Provincetown). I’m wondering if there’s any data yet on the income distribution of the vouchers…

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@streetsblogmass And the Cape Cod rebate program was renewed for this year, so there are rebates available right now for folks who live on the Cape & Islands: https://www.capelightcompact.org/ebikerebate/ #CapeCod #Massachusetts #BikeTooter #mapoli #ebike #BikeTooter

Honestly, why aren’t engineers focusing on driverless trains? Seems like that would be a much simpler system to automate than vehicles on public roadways that have to interact with so many unpredictable variables. https://toot.community/@BarbChamberlain/112215918209295803

Who has $9k to spend on and wants to try this? With the motor and (in the rear wheel), front suspension, cable steering, should be quite the ride (caveat really steep hills vs 130lb bike with hub motor in 26in wheel, you need to keep some speed up and probably need dual batteries, but you can check on the ebikes.ca motor/trip simulator vs your actual hills.)

https://sarteebikes.com/lift/

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@enobacon Looks like a nice first design, but I’d need a mid-drive motor, belt drive, suspension seat post, an upright (Dutch) riding position, and a lockable, covered cargo box. (My next will probably be a Riese & Muller since that’s the closest I can find in the US.)

Like Massachusetts, California has adopted ambitious goals. Unlike the Bay State, CA is getting serious about getting people out of cars and on to trains and buses. Policymakers are targeting a 5 to 10-fold increase in transit ridership above pre-COVID levels by 2045:

@streetsblogmass MassDOT doesn’t even mention mode shift in their latest planning documents. It’s a lot of “keep doing the same thing” with some window dressing that fails to address the climate crisis in any meaningful way… https://www.mass.gov/beyond-mobility

Really great to see a simple curb protected bike lane. You don’t need to completely rebuild a streets to accomplish this. https://social.ridetrans.it/@bobco85/112107963626477441

Are there any route mappers that are able to chain bike and bus trips? I was trying to route a trip using bike trails and buses with bike racks along Cape Cod and it wasn’t an easy task. (It also overestimates the time to ride along trails, making bike trips look a lot longer than they really are.)

Riese & Muller has new details on the Carrie cargo bike. Pricing starts at a whopping $8,479 in the US for the Touring version. The model pictured is the even pricier Vario with the belt drive and Enviolo 380 gearing, starting at $9,119. Add the folding cargo box & suspension seapost as shown & you’re at $9,713. Plus tax. Apparently these will be shipping in May. https://www.r-m.de/en-us/bikes/carrie/

Lazy ask: Is there a good guide out there on making meetings truly hybrid, maybe with equipment recommendations?

I've been on too many unfortunate "hybrid" meetings where it was impossible for people joining remotely to hear what people attending in person were saying because the organizers were relying on a laptop mic in one corner of the room to pick up all sound. Trying to plan well so my work can avoid a situation like this.

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@athena I’ve been doing hybrid meetings at a local coworking space in a small conference room (seats about 6) with an Owl video camera and a wall mounted display. Both connect to my laptop for Zoom or Google Meet. Seems to be working well. (I wish we had the display mounted camera as well.) https://owllabs.com

Bummed that my didn't come with a connector to power headlights.. but I've got my Margo with a that does have headlight connectors, & a dynamo hub on the front wheel. So I can move the dynamo hub wheel onto the BBSHD Cetma Largo, & use that for lighting. The TSDZ2 Cetma Margo can switch to using the ebike motor/battery for powering lights.

But seriously, why would you make an ebike motor w/out light connections? (newer BBSHDs now include connectors, I think)

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@Andres4NY What do you use with the motor? Mine died recently so I can’t even turn the motor on any more, and finding the right display that will work with the 4 year old software on the motor seems to be a crap shoot. (The company I bought it from has gone out of business.)

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@Andres4NY Thanks. I have one of those and was never able to get it to work with my motor. I’ll give it another go. None of the displays I’ve looked at are certified as waterproof, so when I find one that works I’ll have buy some spares to keep on hand for when they fail. The current display only lasted a year.
