This is a issue.

Codes of conduct have started to become close to ubiquitous in academic conferences (my impression in astro).

If we could get software ethics into codes of conduct - making it clear that the choice of software and servers is ethically significant for the role of academic enquiry as part of the wider community, then arguments could start to become as unacceptable as bigotry.

Social media often includes opinions and sometimes rants, not just arguments and external evidence. Wikipedia !voting in 'WP:' space favours arguments+evidence.

Seems to me it's an issue of dominant influence on a conversation, by switching between groups of followers:

' When people use quotes to reply to other people, conversations become performative power plays. “Heed, my followers, how I dunk on this fool!” ' [1]

I'm only presenting the argument, not the evidence. Many people are convinced of the evidence from personal experience on the birdsite (not me - no birdsite experience). I seem to remember that proper research has been done, but I didn't store the URLs - someone else can point to them. I vaguely seem to remember that the evidence was mixed and nuanced.

I don't think people appreciate what "abstractions are leaky" means in practice.

The higher in the stack, the more layers of leaky abstractions a piece of software has to deal with.

Ignoring them means weird errors and unexpected behaviors as assumptions break down. Working around them means maintaining random workarounds.

The higher the abstraction level the more workarounds there are to maintain and weird errors to contend with.

"Let's move to the browser" means "more of these, please". 👀

PS. Mamy 2312 pastafarian. Mniam ;3

Briefly in English for non-PL speakers:

  • the results for religion from the 2021 Polish census were published today [1]

  • the result for people stating that they are Roman Catholic has dropped to 71%

  • the 2nd and 3rd biggest groups are those refusing to state their religion (21%) and those not affiliating to any religion (7%)

  • 2312 people (0.006%) declared that they are Pastafarians

Ahmed Tantawi is not a member of the Egyptian government; he's a former member of parliament [1] who in 2019 tried to get el-Sisi's term to finish in 2022 instead of 2024 [2]. The messages from someone supposedly at FIDH look convincing too (I'm going by the English translation), and specifically tailored to Tantawi.

Building transparent institutions with participatory decision-making based on rational, evidence-based discussion, together with non-authoritarian, effective conflict resolution mechanisms is difficult. Apart from the Usenet, Debian, Wikipedia, FOSS in the online world, some of the Pirate Parties are effective in the formal political world, especially in Czechia, Iceland and the European Parliament [1].

The response [2] does contain several valid points, but the PS contains a critical point of the dispute. The author doesn't understand that in a 60,000-person organisation, "given enough eyeballs, all [decision-making and conflict-resolution] bugs are shallow" [3]. (Appropriate structures, transparent moderation and so on are needed). Julian Assange made the point about secrecy leading to inefficiency.

Deliberately killing 10% of the Tigrayan population from Nov 2020 to Nov 2022, by: systematically executing males of teenage age and above, massive systematic sexual violence, looting of most food/agricultural/industrial resources and holding a very tight siege is argued by several researchers as showing intent [1][2]. Reflecting on reproducibility in space science:

My second major paper was reproducing another result on galaxy cluster populations and my results were the opposite of the original work. I was using a different sample and techniques, and I did not attempt to directly reproduce the original work. At a much later point, I had a discussion with some of the original authors about swapping samples but we never found time for that.

In our reproducible cosmology papers [1][2][3] with we follow the Rougier+2017 definition [4], which in the @turingway diagram puts 'replicable' in the bottom left instead of 'robust'.

I generally say 'reproducible' for 'same data, same analysis', and 'replicable' for the other 3 cases.

Is this a world first? A legal case in France against an arms dealer, "Eurofarad" aka "Exxelia", for « complicité de crime de guerre et homicide involontaire » – "aiding and abetting a war crime and manslaughter" of a family in Palestine?
