I'd like to help archiving websites.

With the wayback machine you can only save a single web page but not recursively the whole website, right?

What would be the best way to do it locally?

wget does the trick but I haven't figured out how to also download all media with it.

WebHTTrack is weird.

#Apple and #Google are still busily at work figuring out how to "DRM the Web".

Google's trial balloon was in part to fool us into thinking we'd won and they stopped. No. They're just going to find a way to do it that maybe we won't notice or fight against as hard.

Mainstream news media sites are getting better at thwarting the #InternetArchive and its #WaybackMachine. I would like to know how the browser vendors are assisting the media with these countermeasures because I'm certain they are.

5 years ago this week, I was writing the biggest @medium blog in the APAC region, and one of the biggest in the world at the time, with over 120,000 followers.

One night, while drunk, depressed and suicidal, I deleted my Medium account and everything I had ever written. Burned it all down.

A couple of months after that, I came to terms with the fact that I was an alcoholic.

Ever since then, I've been rebuilding my life, my career and my work.

it gets better.

syeedali,

Consider reaching out to Medium to see if there's any way they can restore it. Given that it was very large, who knows.

Also, as another person mentioned, check the Wayback Machine.

Good grief, I only just noticed that the Wayback Machine browser extension adds not just a menubar item – it also adds a contextual menu. At least in Safari on macOS, if you right-click on a page, you have access to it there.

My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

@ajsadauskas @pluralistic @technology There's always @internetarchive . If you want a place to preserve your videos, and you don't require , upload them.
The might already capture your videos, but you don't need to take the chance, and their Video library is better curated.

Remember this post of mine, a walkthrough of how to use Nitter, archive.org, and archive.ph to fully archive tweets (including tweets higher and lower in the thread)? https://kolektiva.social/ Well, since I made that post, two things have happened:

  • Archive.ph stopped saving archive.org captures of nitter.net

  • Nitter shut down

It's now just about impossible to properly archive tweets. You can still right click and save the page, and you can still use archiveweb.page, but they're so much less user-friendly and so much harder to share.

Does anyone know what happened to the Hummingbird Foundation for ME website? They had a really nice symptom severity scale that I used to point people to, but the whole website is gone now.

Does anyone know whether it would be okay if I post the scale directly in the MEPedia, since the link is broken?
