If you're migrating over from Pebble, the original founders have decided to experiment with their own Mastodon instance.

A comparison of and data collection / app privacy policies as seen in the iOS App Store. In short - no data is collected at all in Mastodon. Threads has at least 5 scrollable pages of data collected about you and shared with advertisers.

RasberryPi is running! 🥧

I got a bit nervous because it wasn’t responding at first. Turns out I had a loose connection on one of the fan pins. A jiggle or two later and bam!

Fan is annoyingly loud. Just a cheap fan, hoping I can resolve that.

Playing with the piOs tonight but will go headless on it and install PiHole soon.

Wonder if it’s available live in the states somewhere.

The proliferation of is exciting. But don't dismiss those that want to defederate with corporate socials. The was built by individuals escaping the harassment they faced on those platforms.

If you don't agree with your server admin's decision to federate with a specific domain, you can block it on your own. You have the power!

This seems preferable to an admin making the decision for all users.

Are there loopholes I'm not aware of here?

I setup an @owncast live streaming server on Digital Ocean and it was extremely simple. Using it to learn more about @OBSProject

Didn't include the federation bits since I'm just fooling around but I'd say this is absolutely the easiest way to do the thing for sure.

Got my first (Pi 4 Model B) and put it together last night. I was so excited to start it up and then realized…I was missing the mini hdmi cables. 😩

So…that arrives tomorrow. Thought about going headless with it and just connecting via SSH but I do want to see the Pi OS.

Safari profiles and tab groups are nice.

I've tried to make it work on Firefox, but there's just not enough separation. For example - I have to login to a specific portal as three different users during the day for work! Firefox gets super confused and I end up having to logout and login multiple times a day.

Safari keeps each profile sandboxed from each other so it's much easier to keep things sane.

Welp, here we go. Learning about Salesforce and racking up the newb badges. I have to say, they are going about this the right way with extensive training and communities setup for free.

You don't need a subscription or anything. And, you can spin up VM's of environments to play around with, mess up, delete, etc. easily.

Ok maybe it's a tad bit early for New Year's Resolutions, but I'm looking for recommendations on a personal task manager. I started using Obsidian this year and it's been a game changer for documentation of all the things (personal, work and otherwise).

But not finding a groove for my todo lists there.

Todoist? Microsoft Tasks? Is Apple Notes good enough? Anything opensource? I can self-host, too.

I just noticed that Mastodon web is identifying Group accounts in the UI and happy to see it.

With the expanding, I appreciate knowing that I am replying or interacting with a Group account, where my response may end up in front of audiences I wasn't expecting.

Hoping more third party clients will start adding this as well.

The identifier is included in any Account element returned in through the official API.

Spent some time researching the capabilities of a Mini PC as a starter Proxmox server and it sounds...plausible. I'm not looking to run hundreds of VMs, so may give it a shot on a little BeeLink Mini S12 just to see what it's all about. Now to hunt for bargains.

This feels like a LinkedIn question but I would really prefer to hear input from the fediverse. If you manage a dev team, and need to show management an overview of projects on a weekly basis..what works best?

I tend to get detailed with timelines out of our project management tool, but it can be difficult to digest, I get it. Trying to find something that is easy to put together weekly and simplifies the presentation.

My mom has dementia. She loves social media. It's her way to connect to those she loves in a safe way.

We monitor her usage and interactions with others. At some point, we will need more control.

I refuse to take this joy away, so I'm always on the lookout for tools with better moderation and safeguards.

Facebook has "teenage supervision" which fits the bill, but stupidly they restrict supervision to people 13-17 years old.

I'm going to find a solution, even if I have to build it myself.

If any fediverse platform devs are interested, it appears you could request a collaboration with Facebook / Instagram to create a "Transfer Your Information" process.

This would allow users to just click a button and have their posts converted over to another platform rather than deal with the whole archive export / import.

There's already one for Wordpress and Blogroll.

Setting up various ActivityPub implementations lately (small, single user stuff and one larger one). The incoming requests are rivers of DELETEs, most of which have never actually interacted my instance before.

I understand the reasoning, but wish there was a layer above my instance directing irrelevant AP traffic away from my little single user server.

Recommendation: Don't federate with large instances if you're just tinkering around with stuff.

An interesting tidbit about the Threads opt-in process. I tried turning the opt-in on and then quickly back off - when you turn it off, you can't turn it back on for 30 days.

If someone entices you to an in-person meeting with the promise of bagels, and then brings only asiago cheese bagels and no cream cheese because "there's already cheese on it", they don't understand bagels, they don't understand you, were never your friend, and now will never be.
