Tonight I added Ombi to my home lab stack. Interesting concept, still testing it out. Basically, it tries to make Plex/Radarr/Sonarr non-techie spouse friendly.

I'm also getting to the point now where I actually do need to start monitoring my systems for errors, I/O, etc. so next on my list is Grafana and Prometheus. It feels like overkill...

It's a big day in my . Preparing for holiday guests, and it's been requested to move my servers out of the guest closet and into my office. Here's my official announcement:

ATTENTION: There will be some downtime today between 3 and 5 PM CST as we relocate servers to a spouse certified location. (All 2 people that connect to these servers have now been alerted) 😆

Today, I learned about Ventoy, a bootable USB drive management tool.

Instead of having my jumbled collection of labeled ISO drives, you have one thumb drive with ALL your ISOs bootables and you select your ISO from a menu when restarting. Putting my label maker out of a job....

Also - you can theme the Ventoy interface. Lots of options out there. Y'all really know how to waste time in a good way.

For anyone interested in following my path to learning , I've decided to separate those posts onto a different account. Follow me over at @box464 and help me stay on track with my admin certification path (sooo long to go!)

Mentioning @faylen @judisohn @jake4480 to help me keep honest on my study schedule!

Continuing my journey into and decided to follow the Admin path, as well as recommend it to my team as an initial base. Some team members may end up being developers or solution architects, but I think having this base understanding will be worthwhile.

Also, I am considering creating a separate account for this as I know many of you follow me for fediverse related content specifically. It feels a little corporate and that doesn't mix well. I get it!

My home server network is coming along. Today I mapped out the system, identified some security risks and fixed them.

Reviewing the devices on my network was pretty eye opening. More IoT devices than I imagined. 👀

Decided on a naming convention for servers. Using characters from my favorite book series The Belgariad. Polgara is the nginix proxy server, bossing everyone around. Durnik will be the reliable web server.

Next step - firewalls. Recommendations welcome!

Looking for first hand experience / review of Proton Mail (and any of their related apps). I've signed up for the free tier but would need to commit to a higher one if I go all in. Going from free Gmail to $100 per year for..ever...has me pausing.

How's the reliability? Any concerns I should be aware of? If my family is all in on iCloud, should I just stick with that?

Thanks, I'll be taking notes! 📔

How horrified would you be if your boss offered to “do some coding”?

Some of my team is taking some well deserved time off, so I offered to help out with some of the coding tasks to take up the slack.

It felt good to take off the director hat and dust off my .NET / Visual Studio skills. I promise I didn’t do any damage…at least not yet.

My brain decided to bring up this memory for no reason today. Cereal box records. Back in the day, kid cereals would add cardboard records on the back of their boxes. You could cut them out and play them on any normal record player. The grooves were made with thin plastic and songs were pretty short.

Sound was horrible. But fun.

🪑⑁💺 Looking for home office chair recommendations. 🪑⑁💺

I work from home full time. I spend 8 hour plus extra at night sometimes for study sessions / programming hobbies. Fairly regular sized person, looking for back support - I currently sit at the edge of my seat for some reason. Probably not good.

Willing to spend some money on this, although I will mumble and grumble about it.

Thanks!

Every once in awhile, I look up variations on my name to see if I can pickup the domain name. Over the years, I've lucked out and been able to grab many of them.

But...WTH is going on here.

I’m starting to get intrigued by a new category of social media app. The idea is to not only to support fedi platforms with Mastodon compatible APIs, but also additional platform specific features like emoji reacts in Misskey, or even Nostr and Bluesky if you’re into that.

Instead of jumping from app to app, you view all content without losing the unique aspects of each.

Too many friends and family needing help. Guess it's time to switch to an opensource alternative to TeamViewer. Any suggestions?

Has to be super simple on both sides to allow control (and in some cases, unattended control)

The Podcast Index has an ActivityPub implementation, and now I can follow some of my more irreverent non-techie podcasts directly on the fediverse. So cool! Hopefully they'll add a Follow button soon...but in the meantime:

  1. Find your podcast on the site
  2. Grab the numeric value at the end of the url
  3. Search for the podcast with this name {numericValue}@ap.podcastindex.org

UNHhhh podcast, available through ActivityPub as an actor I can follow!

Me to global vendor: So you're no longer updating this iOS app we've paid for? We want our money back.

Vendor: Sure. Also, take this. <sends zip file>

Me: Blink. Blink. Did..did you just give me the source code?

Vendor: Yep! Have fun. Bye.

Me: What the....? <elder dev shrugs and installs XCode for the first time because there's nothing to lose>

As of this morning, ProxMox has been installed after a few hiccups with a static IP mismatch. Belgarath is spinning.

The good news - I can now complete the install and post-install steps in my sleep.

Next up - a backup plan, and learning about templates.

What to install first? I hear pfSense and Portainer often.

It’s late, but I wanted to see how far along I could get on the ProxMox install. It’s up and running, following a collection of walk throughs and videos I found. But, storage…

ProxMox on a 2TB NVME SSD drive.
Additional 2TB HDD, formatted but not used.
No other disks.

What’s the best way to allocate this storage? I’m thinking I should have switched the install to the other disk…

My hardware in the link.

What do y'all use nowadays for access to weather data APIs? OpenWeather? I see I could get up to 1,000 calls a day for free, which is more than enough - but I have to enter a credit card.

I need to be able to retrieve a basic "On this day, the weather was ____ (sunny, rainy, hot, snowing, etc.)" not exact temperatures or hourly logs.

At work, I've been moving some of our simpler static sites to Netlify or GitHub Pages and it seems to work fine.

Saving us some money from hosting as well. These sites get very minimal traffic or internal staff only, which I have protected.

Am I missing something here - there's got to be a catch. 👀
