At work, I've been moving some of our simpler static sites to Netlify or GitHub Pages and it seems to work fine.

Saving us some money from hosting as well. These sites get very minimal traffic or internal staff only, which I have protected.

Am I missing something here - there's got to be a catch. 👀

App idea sure to get all the folks riled up. A community driven collection of publicly available Wi-Fi passwords so us don’t have to ask someone at the cafe or restaurant. 😅

Mozilla.social opened up to more beta testers today. They are using a custom build of Elk for their default web UI. I'm interested in finding out what exactly was changed from the official version? Not seeing any glaring differences on the surface other than of course the login process.

I’ve had some old windows laptops sitting around and decided to throw various versions of Linux at them to see what happens.

How important is UEFI Secure Boot. Seems like just a way to keep people in windows. OK to ignore or should I only install Linux distress that support it? PopOS doesn’t….

It’s annoying that it shows a big red warning alert when booting. I can get over that.

Searching for the Secure Boot hashtag shows 😂

Husband came in mumbling and grumbling about ESPN and asking me to do my techie magic so he can watch the game.

Unfortunately I do not have any power over two greedy billion dollar companies being petty over a contract negotiation. And now I have a grumpy college sports fan spouse so I have no love for either of these companies.

Interesting find tonight. You can load alternate stylesheets. Just add the "title" attribute to your <link>s and "alternate" to the rel tag. Makes theme switching a breeze!

&lt;link href="default.css" rel="stylesheet" title="Default Style" /&gt;
&lt;link href="fancy.css" rel="alternate stylesheet" title="Fancy" /&gt;

Out of the box it's Firefox only, but with a tiny bit of javascript you can make it work with all the other browsers, too. I'll blog about the specifics.

Just had a frightening thought. If is a hit, will Meta add to Instagram and Facebook as well? And then give you an option to tie all your accounts together under a single profile. Eesh… we need to enjoy our comfy fediverse hobbit cottages now.

Another step completed on my Home Lab journey. PiHole is up and running, and I have my local DNS configured.

Followed a great guide by @chris A fun part was setting up a shortcut on my StreamDeck to turn off PiHole blocking for 5 minutes when I need to test something.

Tweaked it a bit to also alert me when the 5 minutes have elapsed.

Created an Apple Shortcut to do basically the same thing, but available on all my iOS devices!

Air Conditioning just went out. A/C repair came out and parts aren't available until next week. It's 104 degrees today.

Temperature in the household: grouchy and rising.

What would a federated helpdesk look like for federated platforms?

  • Shared KB articles, up and down voted across instances
  • Shared community Q&A forums (Ask, Best Answer format)
  • Shared support / moderation staff (?)

Just a random brain buzz this morning. Not sure it's any more helpful than something like joinmastodon.org and such.

Fill in the blank with any open source group. Not picking on Mastodon, just using as an example.

Mastodon has used Discord since at least 2018. I found essential tidbits about how featured profiles originated for an article I wrote - that information did not exist anywhere else.

All of that history will be lost if / when they move somewhere else.

I wish there was more use of self-hosted forums, but I get the enticement of real time chat.

Switched to use DHCP on my and now I can see where all this traffic is coming from, finally.

PiHole was my first install and I was a little weary of making big changes then - now I'm trying out all kinds of dangerous things. 🤓

Wow my alterna barbershop is full on death metal this morning, and busy as heck. I can literally feel the beat in my chest. I am so out of place here follicly but I love this barber and would follow him anywhere.

Maybe next time I’ll get a blue streak or something. 👨‍🎤

My most popular blog post continues to be about Mastodon Preview Cards generation.

I've updated it to include a few more tidbits:

The image attached to the link must be less than 2 MB in size (the default config from Mastodon) or the image won't be used.

Once a Masotodn server has generated a link preview (image attached or not), it's cached for 14 days before it will attempt to refresh it. This one needs some testing.

Hmmm interesting Threads find - if you don't put alt text on your images, they attempt to guess at what it is and add it for you - and it federates with the image.

It's not very confident in it's answer, always seem to be "Photo by {yourName} on {date}, may be an image of {noun}."

Always better to add your own. But for people who just aren't going to do it, I guess it's better than nothing.

Attended the @fediforum meet and greet this morning but chickened out of doing an introduction. 🐔 There were plenty of great intros, and quite a diverse group - developers, end users, content creators and platform leads. Really great to see.

One of these days there will be enough interest for an end-user conference, I can feel it.

Looking forward to the demo quick rounds, seems like there will be many!

I'm playing around with mastodon 4.2 advanced search, digging into the code a bit. Really trying to do some trickery here but the devs have it pretty well locked down to exactly what is documented. I thought I could inject some elasticsearch precedence or other patterns but those are purely ignored (or cause issues with the search)

Honestly not sure if I'm even using the right syntax but looks close.

I love seeing other people's tidy work from home setups. It gives me a sense of serene calm. ☺️

Then I look down at my chaos vortex of a desk, swipe away the dog fur from my keyboard, locate my mouse under yesterday's mail, and get back to work. 🌪️
