You mean the support tickets I got in 1969 can't be imported into ZenDesk with the right date!? 😠

I'm in a good spot with my Home Lab for the moment. Itching to try new things, but need to ensure the basics are in place first.

Several layers of firewalls are in place. But I'd like to group devices (IoT, daily use devices like iPads, Laptops, etc.) away from anything serving content outside the LAN in more defined way.

My router is dumb and won’t do local DNS entries and that is really annoying me.

My parents are cutting the TV cord. All over the air and streaming. Their TV has a really crappy built in app system, so I got them a TiVo Stream for Christmas and setting it up, then wrapping it! :)

I know a lot of people recommend Roku, and I have a few myself! But the “normals” I speak to in the household prefer the TiVo Stream, so I’m listening.

It’s faster, has no ads (other than TiVo itself), the remote is solid and guide is nice.

I setup a instance at home, and it’s been a great learning experience. Reverse proxies, SSL, S3 buckets, caching and firewalls. Still lots to do!

It’s also interesting to watch the incoming fediverse traffic. Admins aren’t joking when they say ActivityPub is chatty. 😅 I’m only following maybe 12 people and it’s fairly constant.

My husband decorates the house for every holiday, but Halloween is one of my favorites - even tho we haven't had a trick or treater at our door for 10 years! It's all for us. You might catch a glimpse of an actual ghoul in one of the photos.

Various retro halloween decorations, including a pumpkin / snowman monstrosity.
A happy mummy statue holding a pumpkin, surrounded in orange string lights.
A mirror above a bar decorated with bats, crows and horrifying pumpkins. A ghoul appears in the mirror.

I know I've heard of this #ActivityPub issue before - hashtags are sent in the tag collection but don't actually show up in the post itself. What's the fix for that?

Do you have to wrap the inline hashtags in a URL format of some kind before sending out the activity to other servers?

If you post directly to the Mastodon API it seems to manage this issue for you, I think.

Final thoughts from one of the founders of Pebble. Pebble was full of kind people. The hobbit shire of social media. And it wasn't enough. A good read.

"Being kinder and safer is not enough of a differentiator, because kindness and safety by themselves aren’t interesting enough. There was not enough interesting content on the platform for the experience to become a daily habit."

When I lived in Dallas back in the late 90's, there was a monthly open-air electronics market on Friday nights. People would plop open their trunks and trade or sell computer parts. It opened at MIDNIGHT and went through 11 am the next day. It was beautifully chaotic, and with some grey haired perspective, probably illegal. 😆

Does anything like that exist today? Is there a website directory somewhere of these kinds of markets?

maybe?

Today marks my one year fediversary. I've written up some thoughts about what I've learned this year.

But in summary, I've found passionate communities and kind individuals that spark my interests in ways I never imagined. If you're seeing this, truly, thank you!

Any devs that work with both and repos? How are y'all setting up to work between projects on the different sites?

I feel like the simple solution is to create two OS accounts on my Mac and switch between them, one is "Codeberg" work and the other is "GitHub" work.

Or...push everything to GitHub and have it sync over to Codeberg? That seems to completely defeat the purpose.

Or maybe I'm making this too complex. That's been known to happen.

Spoutible offers investment opportunities to users, raises almost $250,000 in a day. Some users didn’t realize it was an investment, thought it was a donation…

Has Mastodon ever raised $250,000 in a day? How do we make that happen?

Part of my Home Lab journey is setting up some alerts / dashboards to let me know the health of my servers at a glance.

This led me to the concept of custom start pages for your browser, like these. Seems to be almost an art form! (or a way to waste time fiddling, or both)

Is there a favorite among devs? A different one for Home Labbers? What do you like for personal use? Who knew?!

Hmm...did preview card displays on mastodon web change recently? Makes the timeline jumpy.

If the link has an oEmbed, you get that immediately, but then as the post comes into view, it starts generating a preview card and makes the timeline move around.

Not happening on the app, just the web version.

Interesting because previously the cards were generated server side only...

Test it for yourself with:

These new eInk displays in grocery stores and Best Buy make me nervous. Surge pricing is made way too easy with these.

Hot out? Push those air conditioner prices up $50 bucks for the afternoon.

Thanksgiving Day, 2 hours before dinner? $5 price surge on all stuffing and spices.

Beginner Home Lab question. Using Portainer. Right now, I have an NGINX web server spun up serving a single website.

For new websites, what's the recommended path - add them to the current Nginx container? Or spin up a new Nginx web server container for each?

In my old way of thinking, it would be the former, but something tells me y'all are spinning up web servers left and right.

how to turn off the camera handoff on my phone for calls, which was super annoying. Every time I tried to join a meeting, my phone camera would take over and everyone is looking at my ceiling fan or worse, up my nostrils, or both. Lovely. 👃

This happens if you have an iPhone or iPad with MS Teams installed and are near your laptop / desktop Mac with this setting turned on.

iPhone/iPad > Settings > General > Airplay & Handoff > Continuity Camera

Disable it!

Great for live posting events like . Stick around for 2 days at most and then self destruct. No one needs to see my "oooh cool!" posts forever.

I keep thinking of how creatives could utilize and similar to what they’ve done with Mickey Mouse, I can imagine comic strip vingnettes playing out in an immersive experience. Imagine joining Calvin and Hobbes on an adventure with Spaceman Spiff, or hanging out on the hillside with Opus and Bill the cat.

Wow, @stefan has done an amazing job pulling together a somehow concise yet detailed reference for any developer looking to start coding in the fediverse. Bookmark!

One thing it demonstrates is that while these apps are based on ActivityPub, making them all accessible in a single front end is still complicated. Each has their own separate authentication and API, many with a bridge to the Mastodon API for compatibility.

I've been listening in on the today when I can and it was mentioned that the BBC is floating the idea of using more ActivityPub platforms beyond Mastodon.

@pixelfed was mentioned as a possible way to internally manage and share media that comes in from their teams. Awesome!
