An American friend of mine thinks beans on toast is disgusting. So to all none Brits (as we find it delicious)…is it disgusting to you?

Side note - I find it astonishing that someone from the country that invented “cheese in a can” can find this “dish” disgusting. 😂

@kev I’m from Germany and just had beans on toast for dinner. 🤷🏻‍♂️

All the people disappointed with NixOS right now should consider putting their energy into Guix instead.

I would describe The Guix project as "allergic to corporate entanglement."

@daviwil Has something specific happened? Why are people disappointed with NixOS?

Everyone knows I'm a watch geek, but I've now taken it one step further and added a watch wearing log to this site.

@kev Good to see that there are people out there with an even bigger watch problem! 😉

Great idea! Once you've got the numbers, it should theoretically become easier to let a watch go.

@bkil One of the problems is: As soon as you allow img tags, ad companies will start to include transparent images to track you. You give them a nice tool, they exploit it. Once scripting is allowed, all the flood gates are open and we are doomed again.

@jack @jstepien Every time I read something like this my brain reminds me that might be the only solution and most probably too few people might go down that route.

Im thinking about replacing my NAS with . But I’m not sure about one usecase. My NAS serves NFS storage to a KVM host. On the NFS are qcow images. The performance isn’t great but perfectly acceptable for what I do. Would that still work with Glusterfs or would the constant sync of data in the background be too much?

brejoc,
@brejoc@fosstodon.org avatar

@vwbusguy Thanks for your feedback. I also noticed the conversation you started around glusterfs here on Mastodon. Looks like it's causing trouble sometimes. Not sure if I'd really like to use Ceph, since the setup seems to require a bit more involvement. How about ocfs2? Any experiences with that? Primarily I need a file storage. Only secondarily a qemu vm image storage.

I’m reading over and over that companies and people would like to solve tomorrows problems. What about solving today’s problems first? Or even yesterday’s problems? Quite honestly we’ve got a humongously huge backlog of problems to pick from.

Dear folks, the this-cannot-happen-in-Rust toots have been fun in the beginning. But now they get a bit long I the tooth. Sure, you are right and we get it. But some software is even older than you and is allowed to order the hard stuff in a pub. You can’t just rewrite that on a weekend. Also it starts to look shitty on you. I’m saying this, because I like you folks and I’d like to see more stuff written in Rust. Just don’t be the kind of people others don’t want to have around anymore. ☮️

It's nice that Scarlett Johansson can hire a legal team for that. Meanwhile the rest of us just has to live with all of the things they've created being used to train those AIs without seeing a cent.

Lisp Badge LE, the Arduino based self-contained computer that runs uLisp, has gone viral on tech sites:

This Lisp machine in a pocket is pretty cool but the product listing of the preassembled unit is missing key information, the price:

TIL that you can restore deleted projects in the Build Service by just creating a new project with the same name. OBS is then asking if you'd like to restore the project. Neat!

It's funny how some people obsess over the theoretical efficiency of a language used for apps that run in data centers, while we burn through years worth of resources for the blockchain, crypto currency, and AI. 🤡

If the has shown us one thing, then it’s that today’s interconnectedness without buffers can be a huge weakness. It’s also not unthinkable that something like this could be done deliberately with trade wars on the rise. Let’s have as a . No new chips for several years. Your country starts chip production from scratch. But first they do dumpster diving for hardware. What would be your ? Something that scales well from embedded to datacenter!?

Folks, please…! Before you drink the Kool-Aid, take a look at or any other framework that let's you extend your current server side application without buying into a whole new ecosystem. You can have interactive websites even without react. You can have a specific UI/UX without react. I'm not saying react is bad, it's just completely overblown for most use-cases. And chances are high you underestimate the downsides. Stay small, stay lean!
