Humble Bundle seems to have a bundle with some Cherry Audio virtual synths at the moment, including Quadra which you'll hear on a few Key 13 tracks, notably Primavera and Lateral Flow.

Also includes Mercury-4 which is a Roland Jupiter-4 emulation, and Dreamsynth.

The deal includes a whole bunch of sample packs too.

Not affiliated in any way but I use a lot of Cherry Audio stuff and this is a cheap price...!

@keefmarshall thanks for the heads-up on this (& to @etherdiver for getting it on my timeline!)… big fan of voltage modular but hadn’t dipped into cherry’s other stuff until now!

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

@RickiTarr how about the black, gay composer julius eastman? he saw some success but ultimately being unapologetically black and gay led to his professional opportunities running dry, and he died rather young unfortunately. luckily his material is starting to be performed and recorded more again.

john cage gave him the 'why must everything you do be so gay??' treatment sooo

anyway here's 'femenine,' a beautiful minimalist 'pulse' style piece - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHgDRv6NVCI

the nyt idiot who thinks the sounds of protest would somehow ruin 4′33″ got me thinking about a wwii-era recording, i believe of solo piano, where an air raid siren went off nearby. the pianist (a woman, i believe) apparently insisted on finishing the performance and leaving the recording as is, marred by the reality of the wartime world.

i cannot for the life of me remember who it was… and web search in 2024 is obviously no help. does this ring any bells for anyone?

i just genuinely do not want a computer to ‘summarize’ anything for me and i don’t understand that want. it’s either worth it to me to engage with something a human wrote or it isn’t, i have no desire for some weird in-between experience. and it’s completely bizarre to me that people do want that.

My Pocket 386 arrived! It seems to have basically the same specs as the Hand386, but in a laptop form factor. There's a few new options for managing the video, and the built-in screen isn't as horribly shit this time.

I see too many exchanges like this.

If you have an obligation to give attribution, do so in the text. By dumping it into alt text, you are communicating that it's somehow distracting for sighted folks, but it's ok to distract blind/low vision folks.

Then the conversation goes to how alt text can be automated. Because while folks can hand create text for sighted folks, they see it as a burden to do so for blind/low vision folks.

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@LinuxAndYarn @meganL but the point is that the attribution should be a part of the text to begin with, making it available to both users and non-users of access tech. the alt text should solely be used to ‘fill in the gaps’ of what a user who is unable to see the image needs to gather from that image.

of course this is very human and subjective, but ideally redundancy should be kept to a minimum (which definitely means not copying the whole post in there, yes!)

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@LinuxAndYarn @meganL but if the image is intended for a sighted user, then its attribution should not be buried in metadata that exists to assist users with access needs. using alt text as a convenient, tucked-away second location for text that is of equal importance to all users is, in my opinion, a misuse of accessibility features.

it's the vernal equinox and i had set a goal for myself to get my first ep out into the world today. i met that goal.

wb1 contains four woozy beats, the result of about half a year of really figuring out how to turn all of the noises i make into something roughly song-shaped.

the musicians on the fediverse consistently inspire me, thank you all. i can't promise greatness, but i hope you enjoy one or two of my woozy beats. 💜

Well, shit. Looks like I just bought a Tascam four-track reel to reel (model 34b for my fellow tape nerds) for a crazy good price (supposing it all works; if it's non functional, it's only a pretty good price 😅). hey, a new reason youtube shorts suck. ive been watching a lot of hermitcraft lately and YT keeps pushing shorts in my face that "feature" mumbo jumbo except literally none of them are made by mumbo jumbo. there's no way to know this because shorts don't show a channel name or anything before you click on them

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@eniko it’s also just so frustrating seeing an interesting-looking short pop up and not knowing if it’s someone you trust, or, like, a fascist.

this plus the lack of volume control means i’m rewriting that url every damn time just so i can watch it in normal mode lol

Boeing allegedly removed door plug and didn't replace bolts when they put it back on, according to whistleblower who says there are records of this. https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/boeing-not-spirit-mis-installed-piece-that-blew-off-alaska-max-9-jet/

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@glennf huh, i’m not entirely sure how i feel about a major news publication giving an anonymous whistleblower from a comment section this much weight. the account certainly seems plausible, but like… an employee with a (well-deserved) grudge would know enough about the systems and processes to fabricate a plausible story, no?

i’ll be 0% surprised if/when it turns out to be true & i know this is gates’s bread and butter, but it feels a little odd. i guess any additional public scrutiny is good.

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@glennf oh yeah, i fully believe it’s plausible, likely even! i guess i just… i had read the whistleblower’s comments before the article, and had to keep reminding myself to be skeptical of anonymous internet people. so it broke my expectations in a confusing way too see a respected journalist lend it weight.

but, journalism is also not my profession, not even a little. just caught me off guard as an outsider.

any / / / ger / / types out there with some recommendations?

Ideally I'd like a
/ lapel mic with a line-in and a lightweight with expandable SD memory, or a decent wireless lapel mic that can connect to a usb-c android phone (or voice recorder). I have a Zoom already with four xlr ports, but it's really heavy and I don't generally need something THAT heavy duty for walking-around-outside vlogs. If there's a wireless mic that's good quality then awesome, but barring that at least a line-in mic that I can stick on my shirt collar (assuming I'm not filming something topless lmao) and have it pick up decent audio outside, or even during a convention. I'm hoping to keep everything under $200 (mic plus voice recorder) or under $100 for the mic, but I can go a little higher if it's really good quality.

I've tried a variety of <$30 lavalier mics already and they all kinda suck. I'm hoping if I can find recommendations from a real live human who's actually used it, not bought-out reviews from the manufacturers themselves, I'll have better results. Would be nice to have the new mic+recorder sooner than later, but by Vidcon in June at the absolute latest. Thanks in advance!

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@toplesstopics …this is why musicians who are moving around on stage a lot use headworn mics. essentially, just the mic part of a headset. this might be something for you to consider as well if you think you’ll want to be able to use it topless! i like the samson headworn units at a reasonable price point. cardioid, not omni.

as for what the mic plugs into, the zoom f2 is hard to beat. 32-bit float means no worrying about gain, they’re reliable, and used ones pop up often…

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@toplesstopics …but again vlogging/podcasting is a bit outside my domain so hopefully you’ll get better answers from others! i’m happy to help with any more general questions you might have about this sort of equipment if anything comes up, though!

brhfl,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@toplesstopics so right off the bat i’ll say that i don’t do the things you mentioned, but i’m hoping this is at least a little bit helpful…

when i worked in video production, lavs were basically the solution to ‘everyone will be seated and booms are overkill’… they tend to be quite bad if you’re going to be moving around, as there is a lot of vibration/rubbing on clothes, in the cable, etc. that all gets picked up much ‘closer’ than your voice…
