Since I got my latest phone, running Android 14, I've been suffering from a lot of jank and jumps or sudden scrolls up or down when reading longer web pages.

It doesn't seem to be images or other components popping in late, it almost seems like phantom taps or swipes, but I've turned on visual feedback for taps in the developer options, and don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Another issue is the swipe down from the top to open the notifications & quick settings sometimes just won't work.

@sarajw
In one of my phones, if I read a long PDF, I started to get phantom events. This only occurs in the PDF reader, but seems like GPS "guess trend" location data.

@afilina I hope Im not being useless with vague memories. There was a thing I used on ubuntu, local app. didn't link to external platforms.

The author was German. Which tax locale do you want? I think it was gnucash

@yakkoj how ia a "motorised screwdriver" different to a cordless drill, possibly with a magic elbow and definitely with couple of screwdriver heads?

Can we bring back web rings?

Search engines really suck right now.

(Seriously. Quit bringing up results with words that I didn't search for! I am spelling it right!)

channelOwen,
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@BoydStephenSmithJr @tinker

if there was this large federated network built of OSS software, we could setup a "webring node/ instance".
People with a valid account on other instances could post to it with "subject area" => URL type posts. (building a open knowledge heap, not a ring)
Other users could listen to posts moderated by filter terms on what to listen to. So a person wanting news on bands would have indexes for "music" and genres.

I needed to put a bare SBC away so I went into the Tech Room at work to look for anti-static bags.

I didn't find any, technically... but there's what looks like them in a box labeled "static bags".

clearly this is the exact opposite of what I need!

Astronomers have seen meteors strike the Earth on hyperbolic trajectories for decades; they would have escaped the Solar System if our planet hadn't gotten in the way. They could have come from other solar systems, but an interstellar meteorite has never been found. Instead, these might be coming from the Oort Cloud, perturbed by a rogue planet or star passing close to the Solar System. It might be happening more often than we thought.

The past two nights I wrote a "thread reader app" for BlueSky.

The protocol is absolutely insane.

There's no privacy. And I don't mean missing DMs.

All your posts are available through API endpoints. Without any authentication. By design.

The "invite-only" thing may have you think otherwise.

Here are my last 100 posts.

I just whined about this elsewhere, but this makes a good post, so:

  1. a very good feature of default Win32 message boxes is that they implement Ctrl-C to copy the error message and window title into the clipboard (formatted and everything)
  2. way too few people know this, and accordingly, custom message boxes basically never implement this
  3. if you work on custom UI libraries that have some message box facility, you should!
channelOwen,
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@aras @rygorous talking about Widgets, rather than win32. Proper auto-complete is a large volume of inputs to handle. and timings

I spend alot of time putting things like that onto the requirements e.g. Search boxes should accept paste properly, be it <cntl-C> or <long tap> Android mini-menu

This improves reusability.

Science/coastal hivemind, I need your help. We’re working on the underwater acoustics of small all-electric boats (almost certainly far less underwater noise pollution than engines). We would like to do some trials - just measuring the sound near an electric boat - but we’re struggling to find someone in (or very near) the UK who has an electric boat we could use/hire. Has anyone got any ideas or know anyone who owns an electric boat?

channelOwen, (edited )
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@helenczerski as a weird isolated market, I would look-see if there is an electric narrow-boats market.

but small volume water acoustics

@helenczerski I am thinking about this too much.
what business model would does lots of short trips, and gain from being green and less running costs?
idea: water taxi
webbie: https://electrek.co/2021/05/31/candelas-p-12-electric-hydrofoil-water-taxi-unveiled-costs-85-less-than-gas-boats-to-run/

Maybe outside of expected budget, and likely to be enclosed water again

Just finished Miklós Bánffy’s Transylvanian Trilogy, a wonderful novel set in the final years of Austria-Hungary, from a Hungarian perspective. Among other things, it shows a political system crumbling as politicians refuse to take their responsibilities seriously and instead engage in cheap stunts, buffoonery, and self-destructive political parochialism. (So, absolutely nothing to do with our current day and no lessons for modern politicians to learn here whatsoever.)

channelOwen, (edited )
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@Skoop I have no argument with explicit syntax. But YML is much less painful when you tell your IDE to highlight/ replace tabs.

If you like markdown, but not yaml; you need to think a bit about why. They both have the same paradigm.

ARG. git can autopack the repo IN THE BACKGROUND after a git-fetch, so you can have code that does the quite reasonable steps of:
$ git fetch
$ tar -cf ../blah.tar .

and it'll fail, because tar will notice that all the files are moving around because git is actually still rewriting the files

channelOwen,
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone I automate with bash as its faster than node etc;

do we need to see if there is a git process running? and detect a local git server differently

Dear companies / recruiters:

  • The legal minimum holiday isn't a perk
  • The legal minimum pension contributions isn't a perk
  • Providing equipment to do the job isn't a perk

I'm so sick of seeing adverts or messages where these are treated like they're some sort of amazing benefits

They're not. They're the minimum you're allowed to get away with by law

channelOwen,

@brunty not that I'm not arguing with your point, but "...in the UK/EU".
if the recruiter is a US person, I think wages are a perk if your poor, and an automatic entitlement requirement if you are rich.

The Welsh way of doing numbers is even more bonkers than French and Danish.

"The thirty first" is "Yr unfed ar ddeg ar hugain", meaning "The first and ten and twenty".

"The eighteenth" is "Yr Deunawfed" (The two-nineth).

"The nineteenth" is "Yr pedwar ar bymtheg" (four and fifteenth).

channelOwen,
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@derickr Quite a few of the ones in French where to support historic trade units/ collections of trade units.
like sales unit "twenty bottles of wine" fit in a crate, and you ordered 4 and 1/2 crates, or 90 bottles.

Would the same apply to Welsh?

When it comes to the anti-XML discussion — readability is an opinion, not a fact. A lot of what programmers claim are facts are just opinions.

I am sorry you dislike XML. I remain unconvinced that using JSON or YAML over it is anything other than a personal preference born out of your chosen programming community’s tribalism.

channelOwen,

Why are JS frameworks so darn complicated? I can't even keep a mental model of a simple table with a few buttons. I need to add so much boilerplate code that I'd rather use jQuery. Either I'm missing something blindingly obvious about those frameworks, or they're just added complexity and weird patterns with marginal gains.

channelOwen,
@channelOwen@fosstodon.org avatar

@afilina Some complexity is needed as JS has more weird corners than PHP3 does.
