A crowd destroyed a driverless Waymo car in San Francisco (www.theverge.com)

A person jumped on the hood of a Waymo driverless taxi and smashed its windshield in San Francisco’s Chinatown last night around 9PM PT, generating applause before a crowd formed around the car and covered it in spray paint, breaking its windows, and ultimately set it on fire. The fire department arrived minutes later,...

@allenmichie @livus Can't tell if your comment is pro or con but, yes, Luddites, absolutely.

And that's a GOOD thing.

It's time we do what they did, two hundred years ago.

"...workers knows as the Luddites rose up rather than starve at the hands of factory owners who were using automated machines to erase their livelihoods."

I mean, it's not what I didn't already know on some level, but seeing it spelled out...

@RickiTarr Me and not-my-cat!

But this beautiful neighborhood kitty was the first ever visitor to my new apartment when I moved in last October... (The door was open while I was moving stuff and they waltzed right in 🐈 )

I hate contributing to the stereotype of big mail-order pharmacies but I called their customer support to ask about some billing issues and they JUST KEPT READING BACK TO ME THE SAME INFORMATION I WAS LOOKING AT ON THE WEB SITE.

Three times. 🤬

Unfortunately this is a special-order medication that most places don't handle. Grr.

(Okay, my gripe for the day is over! Everyone have a wonderful day! 🌻 )

omfg. Remember how I posted a week or so ago that Plex on my Linux hackintosh was behaving weirdly and not playing videos I had ripped from DVDs?

Accidentally just discovered those videos play JUST FINE on my macOS Mac connecting to that Plex server as a client!

Woohoo!

I'm thinking about bailing from music streaming services for a while (although I really like qobuz)...

but what's the state of the world currently if I was going to rip CDs onto some system?

Plex? I'm going to be using that for videos, so I guess I could start there?

(and yes I'm being lazy by not doing some web searching first)

I must finally be growing up (after 6 decades 🙄 ).

Did some budgeting last night and confirmed what I suspected, that my resources are quite tight and I basically have very little leeway finances-wise (altho this side gig is helping a LOT 🙏 )

But although I was quite anxious last night, and a bit this morning, it didn't throw me for the utter loop that it used to. Whatever happens, I'll deal with it.

(I'm also VERY aware and thankful that I am actually quite well off, by many standards)

Is it just me?

I will pretty much NEVER click on a headline that says:

"The <N> <X> you must <Y> in 2024".

No, I don't "MUST". I might want to once I read about them, sure, but...

And yet it must work as clickbait, because you see it all over.

(this was one was particularly disappointing to see, in The Atlantic 😢 )

From "Arboreality" by Rebecca Campbell

This was lovely. So well-deserved of its Ursula K. le Guin Prize win (and Philip K. Dick award nomination).

Near-future fiction at its best. I love well-done intertwined short stories like this. It may be a tad too optimistic about us humans, but it's nice to have a smidgen of hope.

A quick read, too. I highly recommend.

I think this is the first time I've heard the original album version of "No Woman No Cry" (most folks think of the live version: much slower, church-y organ, lots more backup vocals).

While the more familiar version is, of course, great in its way, I really like this version!

MUCH more up-tempo & is that actually a drum machine? 😂

The live version is so...

Heavy.
And.
Important.

I honestly like the lightness here.

Does the human body lose "immunity" to germs/etc without exposure to them? E.g. if you've been more isolated (as we have been during the pandemic), are you more likely to get sick from being exposed to other peoples "germs"?

(I suppose I should probably do some lookup on my own first before asking 😅 #lazyWeb )

@dancinyogi I'm on the fence. I have some spinach tortellini leftovers but I had them for dinner 2 nights ago and then yesterday my stomach was a mess, but I don't know whether to blame them (or the sauce I had with them).

So I guess I'm trying to decide whether to conduct another lab experiment on myself.

If not, I dunno... pita and hummus? TJ's fried rice? An apple and peanut butter?

(now you've made me realize I am hungry, which makes sense, since it is 12:30 here)

@ivory okay, this was driving me crazy...I thought I was imagining it but I just carefully checked: On ivory 1.8.1 on my iphone, the order of the options in the boost pop up is different in different places... Sometimes it's view boosts/boost to followers and sometimes it's boost to followers/view boosts.

Anyhow… fans, as much and I’m pretty much constantly grieving and otherwise serious these days, I also need to hear some music in the company of friends. What are you looking forward to this year? I hope to see 1-2 of these artists perform

  • Ben Howard
  • Fitz and the Tantrums
  • Janet Jackson
  • Olivia Rodrigo

What do you think? Venues to avoid?

At some point maybe not this year, I want to check out the Newport Folk Festival, too.

constantorbit,
@constantorbit@hachyderm.io avatar

@stevegis_ssg @tsyum Damn... I may need to think about going to that. But honestly I'm not sure I'm ready to go to any shows yet, although I painfully miss live music.
