My next-door neighbor died yesterday after 4 weeks in the hospital. He was my age (although in far worse physical shape).

The short story:

All those warnings about not taking too much acetaminophen/tylenol?

They're not kidding around. Don't.

I have a new favorite word.

Vetch.

Apparently that's what this is in my apartment's front yard (according to iNaturalist).

I'm thrilled that so far my landlord has made no progress toward cleaning up the wildness of the yard -- so many volunteers, things growing willy-nilly, it's wonderful.

She apologized when I moved in but I made it ultra-clear, no, I LOVE it this way. Wild is good, in my book.

@msquebanh good eye! Yes, there are some remnants from when they lived here and apparently had the front yard much more "manicured". A couple of hostas in the mix.

@msquebanh Very cool. I did not know that! ty!

Finished watching "The Breaking Point" last night (1950). Liked it much more than I expected, but I pretty much love all noir, so...

The last shot is heartbreaking.

The second film adaptation of 's To Have And Have Not -- the 1944 Bogart/Bacall is of course much more stylish.

I watched it on but it's apparently available at the -

full self drive should not be a thing for me to have to worry about driving my car like a normal person

it makes me angry that they don't even force the flashers on so you have some clue that the driver is inconsiderate asshole putting you in immediate danger

constantorbit,
@constantorbit@hachyderm.io avatar

@dannotdaniel I've been thinking this for a while. It should have been mandated that cars actively under the control of any kind of self-driving automation really need SOME sort of external indication to everyone else around. Flashing light on the roof with some distinctive color or something.

@dannotdaniel Brilliant. If I didn't loathe AI I would get one of those image generators to make me one with one of those loudspeakers strapped to a wankpanzer.

And of course, one for today.

I love this photo of my mother. This is exactly who she was, at her core. As a founder of one of the first pre-schools in Jakarta, that trained teachers, many of whom went on to start their own schools...

...she was a mother to so many.

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

Stopping in at FB once every couple of months can sometimes be fun.

(yes, me on the far right)

And no, our band did not normally wear these wonderful polyester outfits; we were also in the glee club and served as the backing band.

I've actually been having a pretty nice, quiet, mostly alone weekend, and I've been surprised that it's been okay--even good!--after feeling lonely and down during this past week.

But then this morning a wave of grief took me for a tumble.

I think because it's my adult daughter's birthday today--and she chooses not to interact with me.

It is what it is.

Doesn't mean it's not hard sometimes.

Apparently it's now a thing for dinner party hosts to ask their guests for money to help with groceries. Eater reporter Amy McCarthy says that's not OK, and offers some suggestions for cutting costs if you want to host but can't afford to. What's your experience with this? Pick as many answers as apply and share any fun stories in the comments.

what an utterly bizarre headline and, I assume, article. No, I did not click through.

It's called "potluck", people.

Humans have been doing it for hundreds of years.

Our Asian pear is slowly dying but it has not giving up yet. It’s made a few sickly flowers and I can see one tiny little pear.

@visionsofnapa I'm actually starting to think about maybe taking an airbnb (or some other arrangement) for a month in your next of the woods ... well, roughly -- thinking Petaluma... to try out living in the area, etc...

for various reasons, that might make more sense for me than going back to Santa Cruz.

Maybe in the fall... 🤔
