The European Council of Literary Translators' Associations (CEATL) publishes its stance on generative AI

"Machines are not translators but ‘translatoids’. They do not translate; they generate textual material."

What to do when a company has delegated customer service to chatbots: make them swear. 😉

So an author discovers someone is selling AI-generated books under her name on Amazon and then Amazon (initially) claims they can't remove them because she hasn't trademarked her name...

The books have been removed by now, but probably only because the author, Jane Friedman, went public.

Read on LinkedIn (no, I'm not going to link to this BS):

"How to automate your business with ChatGPT
The 4-Hour Work Week: Escape the 9-5, live anywhere and join the New Rich"

The best part?

"© this prompt is from my AI Hub"

So they are claiming copyright on their prompt that comes up with results copied from other people's work? 🤦‍♀️

Thrilled (lame pun intended...) to see that my first thriller * will be out on 1 November: I translated Michelle Frances' The Boyfriend into Dutch.

*100% human-translated

I was reading this article because of the translation error, but then came across this:

'Earlier this year, an airline advised its customers to opt out of having an inflight meal, saying it is the “ethical choice”. ... . The carrier has now made it a permanent option on flight bookings worldwide, emphasising the sustainability benefits of avoiding a mid-flight lunch.'

When it comes to sustainability I think the inflight meal is the least if your worries... 🤦‍♀️

En dat zo'n IT-directeur dan doodleuk zegt: "Voor niemand is het een heel groot probleem als bekend is dat je diabetes hebt."

Mogen we dat alsjeblieft nog zelf beslissen?

Kudos to this agency for (finally!) being honest about why can't replace professional :

  1. Mistranslation
  2. Invention of content
  3. Overuse of trending terms
  4. Challenges with proper nouns
  5. Misalignment of register
  6. Exaggeration of style
  7. Misinterpretation of contextual and cultural nuances
  8. Inability to improve clarity
  9. Literal translations
  10. Misinterpretation of mood
  11. Introduction of nonexistent content
  12. Omission of content

Just to be clear: professional don't just add names to their that are not in the source text.

Also: another example of how translators are always mentioned when they (supposedly) got it wrong, but hardly ever when they have done a good job (in which case the author tends to get all the praise). Which is why I am not including a link to the article mentioning them by name.

Manifest for Human Language

"Machine language deceives readers about authorship and claims to truth. In the context of AI systems, the term 'translation' is used for a form of machine language with no person behind it, completely unrelated to the exacting, thoughtful, responsible work that goes into a human translation."

Don't use the word "translator" to refer to translation tools.

A is a highly skilled linguist who can translate a text for its specific use and target audience, taking care of cultural issues, localisation, and any other issues that might cause problems in translation.

A is an automated tool that can only reproduce a literal version of the original text. The result should never be used as a final text, as it can contain linguistic, factual, and/or cultural errors.

Dit moest ik even kwijt (en NRC plaatste het zowaar)... 😉

(Letter I sent to the newspaper because they didn't even bother to name the translator in an interview with the Dutch nominee for the International Booker Prize, a prize for writers AND their translators.)

Received a proposal for a long-term project that sounded legit. Looked up the company on Payment Practices: several reports of people who were never paid for their work, so basically a scammer.

Always do your background checks!

For those who don't know Payment Practices: it's an online database with information about companies offering translation services. For an annual fee of €28 you can access the database and add your own experience with agencies. Well worth it to avoid scams that could cost you hundreds of euros...
