@grivettcarnac The precedent was set and communicated pretty clearly when right after the convoy the cops roughed up a kid who was part of a protest around (iirc) dress code and creepy teachers at a Catholic school. Something like they moved fast then because the kids were not a threat. It's backwards and absolutely corrosive.
(Though I guess at least their saying it out loud? But if I was a far right extremist looking to kick down liberal democracy, wouldn't this be taken as license to be even more threatening?)
Everytime I see someone whine that automated traffic enforcement is a "money grab" I think about the thousands of dollars each light cycle (at $325 per vehicle) the city is leaving on the table at Scott and Island Park.
This thought brought to you by seeing a crossing guard almost hit by a jackass deciding to jam the intersection on a full red.
Currently sleeping the sleep of the righteous, @andrew was up way too late building tools to fend off the current wave of fedi spam, playing whack-a-mole with bad accounts, and getting fedi friends up and running with their own blocklists.
I’d like to convene a discussion this week or next to do a mini retro on this attack and some #designthinking work around fedi spam fighting tools. If you’re interested in the discussion, @ me your email or send one to spamretro at hypatia dot ca and I’ll loop you in on it 🙏
Would love to have a proper UR/UX person on the call, I’m a mere amateur at that part 😅
@leigh@andrew I don't have any of the necessary skills to help, but want to re-up my willingness to (financially) contribute to the cause (of ottawa.place)!
@khoji@futurebird Early modern pamphlets were absolutely wild. The Reformation (as one of many examples) was very much a propaganda war using early European printing technology.
😳”Poilievre’s Conservative Party wants to pass a bill, which would mean #Poilievre would be automatically granted security clearance since he can't or won’t obtain one legitimately.
If this isn’t a screaming red flag, I don’t know what is.”
@Auxonic The city actively competes against transit by overseeing rising fares while keep parking fees and fines low (is city hall still free on weekends?).
@human3500 See also: Shenkman Arts Centre, Cardelrec Centre, Minto Recreational Complex, Richcraft Recreational Complex, are some of the other immediately obvious ones. I'm sure some of the ones named for people might not pass muster, if we are truly concerned about this kind of thing.
We're governed by a bunch of hypocrites looking to score a quick point.
@Auxonic@human3500 We should never name things after living people (I'd be generally ok with going for descriptive names only). If for whatever reason we do and they decide to not pass quietly off the public stage then we should immediately strip the name. I'm looking specifically after a handful of past mayors, but just in general.
@grivettcarnac Setting aside the hypocrisy and aspersion casting of the conservative developer funded wing of council, the question I haven't really seen answered is whether this kind of donation would have been previously paid out as the type of development charge the province got rid of (chopping chunks out of municipal budgets in the process).
@grivettcarnac Yeah same. Also, if one of these guys negotiated something similar, my guess they'd be framing it as a win for the city budget and showing how they are low tax champions.
The reason why the Liberal party opposes making anything universal is to minimize the number of Canadians attached to the program, who will object to its degradation in the future.
This is what they are doing with the dental program, and what they will use to prevent pharmacare from going through.
If the dental program was universal, any attempt to remove it would be opposed by almost every Canadian. The current program can be degraded with objections only from the poor.
@johnefrancis The most recent universal (in that they're not means tested, not that everyone can access them as will become obvious) programs are probably child care and full day kindergarten. Hopefully they don't get targeted for degradation.
With the above freezing temperatures coming up, I'm going to give my bike a bath to get off the grime and (most importantly) salt. Any tips? Usually I just hose it down but want to do a bit more.
@grivettcarnac Solidarity. Some kids (and I expect, their parents) can be reaaaaal assholes. We can hope that they'll eventually overcome the bad behaviours and discrimination that they've been taught, while supporting our own through the dickishness of the bullies. The shift from almost purely physical problems to emotional ones is really hard (and drawn out). Good luck with to you both!
-Side streets to Byron, basically choose your own adventure.
-Byron to Roosevelt, the pathway is clear but not accessible at side streets, just use the road. It's low traffic.
-Roosevelt to Scott (extension), it's perfectly fine but the access to the MUP is blocked.
-Scott to Bayview, the south side is less than ideal. Usually only the sidewalk is clear. Bumpy, and the stupid curves on the bike lane are all snow storage. I switched north at Island Parks and it was much better
-Albert to Booth, probably the best maintained strip.
-Booth and Chaudière, frustrating as always. Also the bike lane on Chaudière is snow storage so I used the (empty) sidewalk.
ETA, last week it took me about 25 minutes to get in. Today it was 31. The difference is due to conditions.
